    It's a more involved process than I'd considered! Early cyanobacteria might have actually limited themselves by creating O2 they couldn't cope with.

  16. Jake Francis from UC Davis, presenting really nice experimental work on the establishment of nectar microbiota in Epilobium canum — plants and cultivars differ in growth potential for yeast and bacteria, but pollinator-mediated dispersal can basically swamp those effects.

  17. Andreas Härer of UCSD reports comparisons of the gut microbiota of threespine sticklebacks that grew well or poorly in artificial pond experiments, and finds that high-growth fish have more similar gut microbes.

    Interesting results, a lot of unanswered questions yet.

  18. Tom Miller from Florida State, walking through another series of experiments on protist-bacterial microcosms, this time evolving four different protist predators in single, paired, and four-way competition.

    Across combinations, evolved protist lines tend to reduce the diversity of the bacterial community, and seem to be converging on using the same set of prey taxa.

  19. Renee Petipas from Washington State U, looking into the microbial community of eastern Washington's Palouse prairie, a really rich grassland community that's been ~99% converted for agriculture.

    Spring wheat grown in natural Palouse soil grows more biomass and has more early flowering than wheat grown in agricultural soil — but isolating microbes from the two soil types doesn't seem to carry over those effects.
