At long last I’ve managed to get hold of the last book in “The Expanse" series.Rather than rereading the entire series form the beginning (that’s a treat I’m saving for another time), I’m reading the last but one book, “Tiamat’s Wrath,” which I’d put on one side until I’d managed to get hold of a copy of the long-awaited Leviathan Falls.
That’s the problem with being reliant on charity shops for your reading material, they haven’t always got the books on your “Want List.”
It was a bit of a struggle at first, what with four years having passed since the events of the previous book.
It doesn’t take long to reconnect with all your favourite characters with the exception of Chrisjen Avasarala whose funeral is taking place as the story begins.
I’ll report back on my progress as I get further into the story.
For my money, this series is amongst the best hard science fiction ever written and puts right all the things Star Trek gets wrong.

Just finished reading The Great Nerve: The New Science of the Vagus Nerve and How to Harness Its Healing Reflexes by Kevin J. Tracey. Enlightening and inspiring. Prompted me to get my rheumatologist to send me back to neurology. Insight into my yoga practice and teaching. Learned about the impact of my running. Very cool book.

"Socially, Mack and the boys were beyond the pale. Sam Malloy didn't speak to them as they went by the boiler. They drew into themselves and no one could foresee how they would come out of the cloud. For there are two possible reactions to social ostracism -- either a man emerges determined to be better, purer, and kindlier or he goes bad, challenges the world, and does even worst things. This last is by far the commonest reaction to stigma."

Zuletzt beendetes Buch: #VoxMachina - Stories Untold. #amreading #Fantasyromane #CriticalRole

This weekend I’m reading something which has been mouldering in my TBR pile for years: “Flatland” by Edwin A. Abbott! It’s pleasantly weird and a recognisable influence on other works, judging from what I’ve read thus far…

Just finished "Seven Little Sons of the Dragon" by Ryoko Kui. As expected from the author of "Delicious in Dungeon", an excellent collection of short stories that are whimsical, profound, hilarious, and beautiful. Kui's characters even in the short form always have a little extra twist beyond what you'd expect. I think my favorite of these was the story about mermaids, both for its ambiguous depth and for the hilarious "Lone Wolf and Cub" shout-out.

#WritersCoffeeClub 10 July: Share a bit of written word that drives you wild. What speaks to you about this
He found himself in Meran with some cousins who had various slight ailments, but, being rich and imaginative, had gone to a sanatorium to be cured. But for its sanatoria, Meran might be a cheerful place; their ubiquity reminds a healthy man too often that the air is really good. Being well enough himself, except for a few mental worries, he went to a Gasthaus in the neighbourhood. In the sanatorium his cousins complained bitterly of the food, the ignorant “sisters,” the inattentive doctors, and the idiotic regulations generally—which proves that people should not go to a sanatorium unless they are really ill. However, they paid heavily for being there, so felt that something was being accomplished, and were annoyed when he called each day for tea, and told them cheerfully how much better they looked—which proved, again, that their ailments were slight and quite curable by the local doctor at home.

I’m close to finishing the third book in “The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel” series by Michael Scott, “The Sorceress.”
He’s introduced a fair few new characters in this one including William Shakespeare - the immortal human known as the Bard; Billy the Kid - real name Henry McCarthy;
Gilgamesh the King - the oldest immortal human, also known as the Ancient of Days; and Cernunnos - the Horned God.In the previous book he introduced Niccolò Machiavelli – an Italian immortal; Comte de Saint-Germain – a former apprentice to Nicholas Flamel, the immortal Saint-Germain who is married to the immortal, Joan of Arc – the Maid of Orléans aka Jeanne d'Arc; Juan Manuel de Ayala – the ghost of the Spanish who’d discovered and named Alcatraz Island; Dagon – a fish-like creature who predates the Elders; and
Mars Ultor – Mars the Avenger.Quite an unexpected cast for somebody who’s an expert on Irish folklore and fairy tales.
Only Cernunnos would seem to fit in with the author’s area of expertise as he’s sometimes conflated with Conall Cernach, a hero from the Ulster Cycle of Irish mythology.

📘 “The Long Version” by Petra Hůlová, translated from Czech into English by Alex Zucker
This book isn't out yet, but will be in September 2026. I received a digital ARC for it (thanks!).
This novel follows a female author right after a recent book release. She’s ageing past 50 and her relationship with her works and as a public figure are changing. One day her two teenage children find her journals and snoop through them, finding out the questionable circumstances of how her career started. Her daughter is not letting it go, to great anger of the protagonist. It’s a painful confrontation that makes it clear that, (deliberately or not), if her daughter ever has to deal with something like that in her own life, she’ll have to deal with it on her own.
This was a fascinating character study. I love reading unlikable main characters, but this really pushed the limits and almost made me reconsider. Probably because she’s so realistic, an everyday variety of frustrating person that completely got under my skin. In her thoughts she compares everyone, belittles others, is very negative about her children and freely admits how much she lies. She genuinely never misses an opportunity to snark on anyone and is so judgemental. This open view into her mind is difficult to bear.
The protagonist’s hypocrisy is also through the roof. She writes about female solidarity, but looks down on every woman and caters to the men in her life. She promotes motherhood, but is never interested in the development of her own children. She moves in the circles of intellectuals but laughs at almost any kind of knowledge and true discussion of ideas. She literally gives speeches about things she has never acted on herself. As a reader younger than the protagonist and with more sympathy for her daughter than for her, this is like looking at an older generation and being completely baffled by their self-assuredness in the face of the terrors they've helped create. How is she this full of herself? How is she so reflective and self-aware for some subjects, but also somehow not at all for most of the things in her life?
I thought the second half of the book was the strongest half. I spent enough time with the protagonist to get more insight into the why and how of the way she acts. How she can’t handle conflict with any serious depth to it, how she can’t even deal for one second with any subject that truly would hit an emotion buried deep inside. How her coping relies on lying and looking away, never questioning the ideas and worldview she's grown up with. The story doesn’t force any kind of redemption arc for the main character onto the reader. It just feels sad, the way things go sometimes, even whole lives.
Would recommend if you enjoy reading books about terribly flawed people, or like reading about topics like metoo, generational differences, women’s sexuality and invisibility as they age, family dynamics. Very well written, but I’m so glad to be out of this woman’s head now.
