Autumn in the woods comes with a fear I feel every year: that the colour will peak and fall in the gap between one visit and the next, and that I will miss it for another whole year. There is a great deal of anticipation in the season. There is a fair amount of anxiety in it too.

Boundary Line (2025)
(The outside trough of a glacier's side moraine is where vegetation growth often is starting first (or contained in), where lower erosion provides better long-term stability and the trough itself ensures more accumulation of moisture/water and some protection from harsh katabatic winds... These young first generation forests are some of my favorite places, but due to the ongoing glacial melt and the coming water shortages in these valleys, they might never make it to fully mature, old growth stage 😢)

Scale Override Ⅱ (2025)
Another view of the same scene from further away, illustrating the scale even better. Note the same hut from earlier in the bottom-left corner. Even though entirely unintentional, and not an aerial photo, it somehow reminds me in character of some of Werner Friedli's[1] work...
Ps. Hard to imagine the hardships when the top of this mountain (at almost 4000 meters a.s.l) was an active frontline[2] during WW1... 😩

Continuing to dabble with a Black and White mood on this #SilentSunday...
It seems everyone knows about Bixby Bridge, to the point where the selfie-culture got so silly that parking around it is now banned.
But it's not the only spectacular example of the open-spandrel bridge design that was the go-to for Big Sur spans in the 1930's.
The Big Creek Bridge IMHO is just as pretty, tucked into the rugged coast near San Simeon
