  1. Wounds

(Some more entries from an ongoing series of photographs about the effects of climate change and increasing erosion in the Alps, here focused at very localized scales & occurrences to make them more concrete, communicable and less abstract...)

    1) Exposed chunks of bedrock underneath the shrinking Langtauferer glacier

    2) Heavily eroded forest in the Lechtal Alps

    3) A dried out alpine lake in the Dolomites

    4) Accumulated rock fall debris near Hahntennjoch (one of Austria's mountain passes most prone to avalanches, falling rocks, and mudslides)

See alt text for more info. Prints (analog & digital) available for purchase soon.

  2. Kellenspitze (2025)

(latest 8x6" Kallitype print from last night)

This mountain is the tallest peak in the Tannheimer Alps, here seen from a narrow ridge path in the north east. It was a fabulous warm day with so many mountain flowers in full bloom and clouds forming/drifting between the passes and nearby peaks, later developing into a heavy thunderstorm (thankfully only when I was already descending again...)

  3. Meander (2025).

(Unlike people who're associating a strong negative connotation with that word, I've always seen active meandering as a strength, a never ending search and adaptation of one's course in changing environments, finding/encouraging/prioritizing flow, learning/sharing/depositing bits of knowledge/material in different places and thereby also changing your local environment, at least a little...)

    "Be like water!"

    (Edit: fixed typo)

  4. New UV lamp, new developer handling & my largest Kallitype print so far (~10x7 inch) — a shot of the iconic Oeschinensee cirque, surrounded by 3500+ meter mountains...

The new light setup is ~10x slower than my other light box, but allows me to do much larger prints in the future. The developer is chemically still the same, but now heated to 40℃. The photo is originally from an old iPhone 6.

The negative needs some more tweaking to increase contrast and maybe another minute or two of longer exposure...

Really excited to be doing larger prints (next step is double size 11x15 inch), giving those fragile mountain landscapes much more presence in person and this old photo process emphasizing their timeless character...

  5. Tectonic Wall

A pretty famous geotope in the Allgäuer Alps with extreme folds and layering. The hundreds of meters thick top layer of mostly Dolomite belongs to the Lech valley thrust sheet (215 million years old) which got pushed above the Allgäu sheet below (190 million years old, here mostly covered by overgrown talus fields) and Radiolarite from the Ruhpolding formation even further below (160 million years old and originally 2000 meter below sea level — hard to imagine!).

  6. Made new test prints on some off-cuts, using a slightly stronger developer solution than usual to see impact on max. depth. The main image (Eagle Creek, Oregon) is using 18% sodium acetate (curve corrected negative), the test strips are of 20% and 15% solutions (both uncorrected). The phone capture doesn't really show the differences too well, but I think I will go for the 18-20% from now on...

  7. "What is an ocean but a multitude of drops." — David Mitchell

Final tweaks (version 11 by now) of the tone curve for digital negatives for my current combination of emulsion & developer: It's pretty impressive how even minute changes to black & white points of the curve have quite noticeable impact on the rest. I've also been experimenting with reducing emulsion from 8+8+1 drops to 7+7+1 drops, but that makes that 1 drop of contrast agent ~13% stronger (too strong), also creating more grainy results.

Never underestimate the power/impact of a single drop!

  12. Giants shrouded in mystery, just like the year ahead...

(Also, it's the last #SilentSunday of this year, hope you enjoyed my selection of 52 images... Analog & digital prints will be available soon!)

  13. A silent scenery in four acts...

(Selenium-toned[1] 4x6 salt print (still in final wash) plus previous work-in-progress stages... see alt text for details)

The picture/motif itself is one of my personal favorites and was taken 4 years ago in the Alpstein massif, when clouds were spontaneously forming around us, creating a wonderful light/scene/drama and a dear memory... now also as print which likely will/can outlast myself

[1] The tones will become more neutral once dry...

  14. Only one way to go here, always forward... just as in life!

(This is the equally stunning & adventurous ridge between Feigenkopf and Große Klammspitze, the summit ahead, almost touching the clouds — if you zoom in, you can just about make out the summit cross... One of my fave hikes ever. Picture is from early May 2022)

  15. #PSA Since I've just been asked again if I could use more topic-specific accounts and not mix my photography with other topics — Unfortunately, nope! I'm on a single user managed instance and cannot create new accounts on this server nor do I want to create an account for every single topic I'm interested in or posting about. However, you can filter my posts by hashtags, which I'm trying to use consistently (also for my own purposes)...
