  1. Alpstein

(To me, one of the most stunning and interesting mountain ranges, the tectonic folds here having created the most incredible forms, formations and stunning valleys in between...)

  2. Wounds

(Some more entries from an ongoing series of photographs about the effects of climate change and increasing erosion in the Alps, here focused at very localized scales & occurrences to make them more concrete, communicable and less abstract...)

    1) Exposed chunks of bedrock underneath the shrinking Langtauferer glacier

    2) Heavily eroded forest in the Lechtal Alps

    3) A dried out alpine lake in the Dolomites

    4) Accumulated rock fall debris near Hahntennjoch (one of Austria's mountain passes most prone to avalanches, falling rocks, and mudslides)

See alt text for more info. Prints (analog & digital) available for purchase soon.

  7. The View From The Precipice (is always the best!)

(Sonnenberggrat doing its name justice on a sunny late-summer-like day in November 2025, two days before winter arrived in full force...)

  8. Kellenspitze (2025)

(latest 8x6" Kallitype print from last night)

This mountain is the tallest peak in the Tannheimer Alps, here seen from a narrow ridge path in the north east. It was a fabulous warm day with so many mountain flowers in full bloom and clouds forming/drifting between the passes and nearby peaks, later developing into a heavy thunderstorm (thankfully only when I was already descending again...)

  13. Meander (2025).

(Unlike people who're associating a strong negative connotation with that word, I've always seen active meandering as a strength, a never ending search and adaptation of one's course in changing environments, finding/encouraging/prioritizing flow, learning/sharing/depositing bits of knowledge/material in different places and thereby also changing your local environment, at least a little...)

    "Be like water!"

  14. Last Light, Last Look Back (Vol.2)

Somewhat unexpectedly, even in the valley, we had the whole place pretty much to ourselves. Not quite the usual Easter weather, but the snow & ice always welcome and emphasizes the majestic scale/depth...

    #LandscapePhotography #BlackAndWhite #NoirCountry #Alps #Mountains

  15. Hoher Ifen (2023)

One of the most unique and geologically interesting and layered mountains in the Northern Alps, including the extremely karst Gottesacker (aka God's Acre, aka Cemetery) plateau with deep caves... one of the areas I'm hoping to explore further this year...

  16. New UV lamp, new developer handling & my largest Kallitype print so far (~10x7 inch) — a shot of the iconic Oeschinensee cirque, surrounded by 3500+ meter mountains...

The new light setup is ~10x slower than my other light box, but allows me to do much larger prints in the future. The developer is chemically still the same, but now heated to 40℃. The photo is originally from an old iPhone 6.

The negative needs some more tweaking to increase contrast and maybe another minute or two of longer exposure...

Really excited to be doing larger prints (next step is double size 11x15 inch), giving those fragile mountain landscapes much more presence in person and this old photo process emphasizing their timeless character...

  17. Tectonic Wall

A pretty famous geotope in the Allgäuer Alps with extreme folds and layering. The hundreds of meters thick top layer of mostly Dolomite belongs to the Lech valley thrust sheet (215 million years old) which got pushed above the Allgäu sheet below (190 million years old, here mostly covered by overgrown talus fields) and Radiolarite from the Ruhpolding formation even further below (160 million years old and originally 2000 meter below sea level — hard to imagine!).

  18. Morteratsch and the majestic Bernina range in full glory 🤩

Yes! That's what I'm talking about... Reprint was successful and much improved! Tweaked negative, new developer mix & weaker toner for more neutral grays. Also built an interim solution/contraption (involving 6kg of books as weight) to ensure the contact print is sharp everywhere...

As for the scene in the image: These are the highest mountains of the central eastern Alps (Piz Bernina on the right is 4048m, the others are all similar). Alone the last vertical ice fall section is ~1000 meters tall... Yet these glaciers are losing length & volume quickly (between 10-30 meters every year, trend accelerating...) The moraine line (approx. 200 meters above the valley bottom, on the left slope, shows the previous volume of the main glacier, which already has lost over 3km in length over the past century 😢

  19. Share not only your successes but also your failures, they say... Latest 8x6" kallitype of my beloved friend Morteratsch. Printed before breakfast this AM...

It might not be immediately obvious in the thumbnail, but this is a good illustration of what happens if there's not enough weight/pressure applied when creating contact prints (and why I'm impatiently waiting for my heavy glass plate to arrive)... I almost do kinda like these blurred areas creating some weird irregular tilt-shift effect, guiding the eye toward the main ice fall section in the center... Still, quality control demands a reprint is much needed! 😅

  20. Made new test prints on some off-cuts, using a slightly stronger developer solution than usual to see impact on max. depth. The main image (Eagle Creek, Oregon) is using 18% sodium acetate (curve corrected negative), the test strips are of 20% and 15% solutions (both uncorrected). The phone capture doesn't really show the differences too well, but I think I will go for the 18-20% from now on...

  21. Hoher Peißenberg (September 2024)

(From my series In The Lands Of Via Claudia Augusta, the ancient and most important Roman road through the Alps which connected the Po Valley in the south with Augsburg and the Danube as northern terminus)

  22. Slowly getting into a rhythm to start the day with doing a print each morning, each time still tweaking either negatives, concentrations and/or durations of different processing stages to adjust tones/hues... A new adventure with some back and forth each time!

This print is of Langkofel / Sassolungo, one of my favourite mountain massifs, just such interesting features and so many dear memories, here seen from the east (around half and hour before sunset)...

  23. Latest 8x6" toned kallitype print, fresh from the tray (well, from the drying line)... 🤩

(Kallitype is quite challenging in terms of balancing achieving deep blacks vs detail, so this scene took quite some tweaking to retain the details in the band of dark shadowy forest, but I'm happy how it turned out...)

  24. Future Portrait Of A Billionaire's House...

Ozymandias, only an inscription and the views remain...

(From our snowy and icy morning walk yesterday... Hohenfreyberg, built & expanded between 1418-1608, burnt down (sacrificed) in 1646. Same fate for the other ruin on the neighboring hill (last image), which belonged to the father and also got destroyed previously (in 1525) by farmers of the surrounding villages...)

  25. Roadtrip Radiance

(July 2021, the blinding evening light stopped us in our tracks to take it all in, also a rare image of @manomine... Been creating more print proofs last night, slowly preparing myself for offering limited edition toned kallitype prints of my images... A phone image of this print doesn't really do it justice, but this is fresh from the drying line...)

  26. "What is an ocean but a multitude of drops." — David Mitchell

Final tweaks (version 11 by now) of the tone curve for digital negatives for my current combination of emulsion & developer: It's pretty impressive how even minute changes to black & white points of the curve have quite noticeable impact on the rest. I've also been experimenting with reducing emulsion from 8+8+1 drops to 7+7+1 drops, but that makes that 1 drop of contrast agent ~13% stronger (too strong), also creating more grainy results.

Never underestimate the power/impact of a single drop!

  33. A silent scenery in four acts...

(Selenium-toned[1] 4x6 salt print (still in final wash) plus previous work-in-progress stages... see alt text for details)

The picture/motif itself is one of my personal favorites and was taken 4 years ago in the Alpstein massif, when clouds were spontaneously forming around us, creating a wonderful light/scene/drama and a dear memory... now also as print which likely will/can outlast myself

[1] The tones will become more neutral once dry...
