  1. New 10x8" silver gelatin print. This one took a lot of refining, back and forth and test strips to achieve the right balance between brightness, contrast (esp. in the brighter parts of the clouds) and smooth mid-tone transitions. So even though this is a contact print from a digital negative, this was the first time in ages (i.e. decades) that I used some physical dodging to soften the horizon and emphasize the haze in the distance a tiny bit more...

  3. A Conjuring Of Clouds

Yesterday's evening walk... It's been a great week for cloud spotting, but with dozens of storm cells & hail moving through the area all week...

(Also thinking about the connotation to wildfires raging in Canada... 😢)

  5. I captured the most magic moment/stage of Kallitype development as 4x slow-motion, the moment when you pour developer over the exposed image and you can see it for the very first time...

    makertube.net/w/9i7i9APGyJk1Aj

Most of the image becomes visible immediately, but details are only completely there after around 30-60 seconds. The rest of the 45-50 minute development process is mostly to refine contrast, tones and making the print resistant to aging and to achieve archival stability, e.g. via multi-stage clearing to dissolve and remove any obsolete iron, toning via salts of precious metals or other compounds, fixing and several rounds of rinsing...

(The print shown in the video is still drying and I will share a picture of it tomorrow)

  7. Making Of A Kallitype (Part 1)

I recorded and edited a short 8-10x timelapse recording of the first stages of my Kallitype development process. Starting with mixing the photo emulsion, brush coating the paper, contact printing (UV exposure), heating developer and then showing the first two stages of actual development & clearing. Final result shown at the end, a 15x11" framed print (also posted here recently)...

    makertube.net/w/2xcd99VfoWWuJS

(Please let me know if you'd like to see more like this... Personally, I find it quite ASMR-capable, even at this high speed, but even more so at real time. The whole process is quite therapeutic in these times!)

  9. Some of you might know that image of Crodon di San Candido already (posted it a few times in the past), but last night I finally made a 15x11 inch Kallitype print of it (on Hahnemühle Platinum Rag, 100% cotton, 300gsm paper). Available as limited edition soon.

Since these prints are handmade (each taking over an hour to develop & process), the tone of each individual print always slightly varies. Therefore, I will be offering an option to indicate your preference for warmer or cooler tones. For example, if you choose "warm" for an order, I would then select the "warmest" (neutral/brownish) print of the edition still available... first come basis...

  17. Alpstein

  19. Wounds

(Some more entries from an ongoing series of photographs about the effects of climate change and increasing erosion in the Alps, here focused at very localized scales & occurrences to make them more concrete, communicable and less abstract...)

    1) Exposed chunks of bedrock underneath the shrinking Langtauferer glacier

    2) Heavily eroded forest in the Lechtal Alps

    3) A dried out alpine lake in the Dolomites

    4) Accumulated rock fall debris near Hahntennjoch (one of Austria's mountain passes most prone to avalanches, falling rocks, and mudslides)

See alt text for more info. Prints (analog & digital) available for purchase soon.

  21. The View From The Precipice (is always the best!)

  23. Kellenspitze (2025)

(latest 8x6" Kallitype print from last night)

This mountain is the tallest peak in the Tannheimer Alps, here seen from a narrow ridge path in the north east. It was a fabulous warm day with so many mountain flowers in full bloom and clouds forming/drifting between the passes and nearby peaks, later developing into a heavy thunderstorm (thankfully only when I was already descending again...)

  25. Meander (2025).

(Unlike people who're associating a strong negative connotation with that word, I've always seen active meandering as a strength, a never ending search and adaptation of one's course in changing environments, finding/encouraging/prioritizing flow, learning/sharing/depositing bits of knowledge/material in different places and thereby also changing your local environment, at least a little...)

  29. Morteratsch and the majestic Bernina range in full glory 🤩

Yes! That's what I'm talking about... Reprint was successful and much improved! Tweaked negative, new developer mix & weaker toner for more neutral grays. Also built an interim solution/contraption (involving 6kg of books as weight) to ensure the contact print is sharp everywhere...

As for the scene in the image: These are the highest mountains of the central eastern Alps (Piz Bernina on the right is 4048m, the others are all similar). Alone the last vertical ice fall section is ~1000 meters tall... Yet these glaciers are losing length & volume quickly (between 10-30 meters every year, trend accelerating...) The moraine line (approx. 200 meters above the valley bottom, on the left slope, shows the previous volume of the main glacier, which already has lost over 3km in length over the past century 😢

  31. Share not only your successes but also your failures, they say... Latest 8x6" kallitype of my beloved friend Morteratsch. Printed before breakfast this AM...

It might not be immediately obvious in the thumbnail, but this is a good illustration of what happens if there's not enough weight/pressure applied when creating contact prints (and why I'm impatiently waiting for my heavy glass plate to arrive)... I almost do kinda like these blurred areas creating some weird irregular tilt-shift effect, guiding the eye toward the main ice fall section in the center... Still, quality control demands a reprint is much needed! 😅

  33. Made new test prints on some off-cuts, using a slightly stronger developer solution than usual to see impact on max. depth. The main image (Eagle Creek, Oregon) is using 18% sodium acetate (curve corrected negative), the test strips are of 20% and 15% solutions (both uncorrected). The phone capture doesn't really show the differences too well, but I think I will go for the 18-20% from now on...

  37. Slowly getting into a rhythm to start the day with doing a print each morning, each time still tweaking either negatives, concentrations and/or durations of different processing stages to adjust tones/hues... A new adventure with some back and forth each time!

  39. Latest 8x6" toned kallitype print, fresh from the tray (well, from the drying line)... 🤩

(Kallitype is quite challenging in terms of balancing achieving deep blacks vs detail, so this scene took quite some tweaking to retain the details in the band of dark shadowy forest, but I'm happy how it turned out...)
