    HOW TO KILL META!
    =================

    [Part 2/2]

    That's it, in a nutshell. Some details need to be worked out, and that's why I am seeking your help.

    A Free Software project might be able to provide the compute resources to host the site.

    As for the culture shock of transitioning from FB ( where an evil billionaires algorithm holds your hand, and censors...ahem...curates your feed ) I am not too worried. People will adapt, to yet another new thing.

    Maybe we should start new users with a relatively private Fediverse setting, so that only their network can reply to their posts. Rawdogging voices from the whole Internet, without a billionaire's insular algorithm, can be a bit harsh. We will never hear the end of complaints about that bogeyman of the Fediverse — the "reply guy".

    "On FB, I didn't get replies from people I didn't know!!!"
    ( Welcome to the discomforts and joys of the Free World )

    Thoughts?

    HOW TO KILL META!
    =================

    The legal math on media is broken. The punitive measures are not effective deterrents against Meta's abusive behavior.

    Meta does harmful things, apologizes, pays a pittance, and still comes out ahead financially.

    Zuckerberg sold out his users data to Cambridge Analytica, and influenced the US election. Then he appeared before Congress like a contrite little schoolboy - "Oops! I didn't mean to accidentally cut multibillion dollar deals and sell out Facebook users. Honest mistake. I promise not to do it again ( unless the price is right! )"
    Because of the math, he still came out ahead.

    I left Meta's platforms a long time ago.

    People who are not savvy, are locked into the Facebook walled garden, because of the Network Effect. ( "I can't leave Facebook. All my friends are on Facebook!" )

    Having liberated ourselves, it is our duty to liberate others, who are still trapped, to give them their right to privacy.

    Here's a plan of action:

    1) Place ads on Facebook, explaining the benefits of the #Fediverse
    ( Fediverse.info/ )

    1.1) Freedom from Meta's censorship and algorithms.

    1.2) A community owned, open social media platform.

    1.3) Based on Free Software, auditable by all.

    2) When a user clicks, guide them through exporting their data from Facebook, and deleting their Facebook account.

    3) Give them an optional questionnaire, asking about their interests, and match them with the right #Mastodon instance.

    4) If they skip the optional questionnaire, pick a semi random Mastodon instance for them.

    5) Give them an option to enter into a Facebook migration registry.

    6) Help them set up a Mastodon account and import their data.

    7) If they opted into the migrant registry, reconnect them with their former Facebook connections, who also joined the registry. Like a reunion in Heaven with your loved ones. ☺️

    Migration Details:
    ===============

    1. Set up a website to facilitate the exodus out of Facebook/Twitter.
    For example:
    Facebook2Fedi.org / Twitter2Fedi.org

    2. The websites can be publicized through word of mouth, or any number of other means, not just through ads on Facebook / Twitter / X

    3. It's a week's worth of work for an experienced programmer. So the requirements break down as:

    3.1 A programmer's pay for 1 week ( or volunteer hackers ).

    3.2 Two internet domains.

    3.3 managed web hosting costs for 1 year.

    3.4 customer support hotline number.

    A lot of these costs can probably be covered by existing Free Software projects, which may offer free hosting. We might find enough Fediverse volunteers to operate the hotlines.

    Technical Details:
    ===============

    1) The User clicks on a link to go to FB2Fedi.org ( working title )

    2) The website guides them on how to get FB to release their data to them.

    3) The user jumps through the FB hoops, and downloads an archive of their FB data. This might take a day or two.

    4) The website ( FB2Fedi.org ) guides them through setting up a Fediverse account.

    5) The website optionally helps them upload their contacts file to the registry hosted by the site ( infosec details to be hashed out ).

    6) The website helps them upload their posts and photos etc to their Fediverse account. This might require some parsing scripts, for ETL ( Extract, Transform & Load ).

    7) The user's data pretty much stays in their control. Their social network is mostly the data a user entrusts the migration registry with.
    Using some cryptography primitives, it might be possible to limit this exposure, and mitigate the risk.

    Is there anywhere in the continental US that’s further than 2,500 km from Canada? Asking for the Trump regime fascists disrespecting Canada’s sovereignty, and 40,000,000 Canadians who recognize the threats.

    All of a sudden Trump is very interested in the Alaska race, and has already sued to try and preemptively stop certification of the election if the Democratic candidate wins.

  6. “Despite Trump’s statement yesterday that billionaire Elon Musk had removed the restrictions from Starlink and Starshield that are crippling Ukraine’s ability to protect itself from Russia, Ukraine president Volodymyr Zelensky said today the restrictions continue.“

    The Hague awaits. The reasons for the Trump regime’s attacks on the ICC and international law and jurists are revealed more every day.

  7. Joel Riddle, the chief executive officer of the company, Polar LNG, resigned when he learned that the funding came not from the United Arab Emirates, as he had been told, but from Russia. “It’s not only unlawful, but it’s not in the U.S. interest to have Russian technology controlling the commercialization of Arctic gas in the North Slope,” Riddle told the New York Times reporters. At least two other Polar LNG executives have also resigned, citing their concerns about the Russian financing.

    Talks about gas in Alaska were joined with talks about the sale of parts of Russian energy giant Lukoil to the U.S. government and investors, some of whom are tied to Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and special envoy—and business partner—Steve Witkoff. Also involved in the Alaska project is Gentry Beach, who was a college friend of Donald Trump Jr.”

  8. “Troianovski and Lipton report that a project designed to liquefy natural gas in Alaska and export it would not only use Russian technology but also be funded with money from a Russian company close to Putin that is currently under U.S. sanctions. That company, Novatek, told the reporters that it is planning to take “minority shareholder” status in the Polar LNG project, a move the reporters call “a striking effort by the Russian energy giant to seek ownership of American gas production.”

    U.S. sanctions against Novatek mean Polar LNG would need special permission from the Treasury Department to use Novatek’s equipment. The Graham Act sanctions bill Congress recently passed specifically targets Novatek because of its ties to Putin—a likely reason that Trump just waived the new sanctions just two days before they were to go into effect.”

    Elon Musk is wilfully ignorant and spreading Russian propaganda.

    And yes, this sounds very much like he’s defending his aid of Russia which helped Russia murder Ukrainian civilians.

    It is not safe to travel to the . Another tragedy barely avoided:

    “An Air Canada Express flight that was bound for this week was abruptly ordered by air traffic control to stop just a few seconds after it received clearance to take off at a U.S. airport, at the same time as another aircraft was approaching the runway to land.

    The incident took place on Tuesday morning at Lambert St. Louis International Airport in , where the Air Express flight, operating as AC8886, was preparing for its departure to Pearson Airport.

    The flight, which was operated by Jazz Aviation, had already been cleared to take off from the runway when an air traffic controller abruptly cancelled the clearance, as a Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 was approaching the runway to land.

    According to audio shared by aviation YouTube channel VASAviation, the control tower gave clearance to the Southwest flight before instructing Air Canada to proceed with its takeoff on the same runway.”

    More than 30% still support the Trump regime.

  12. “Top officials in the State Department made clear that only candidates who voted for President Donald Trump would be eligible for the mid-to-upper level foreign service roles. They also told candidates that their campaign donation history would be examined and any donation to Democrats would be disqualifying.”

  13. “Slowing down Starlink was, in effect, a U.S. intervention in a foreign conflict. It helped Russia, our long-time adversary, and hobbled Ukraine, during a very critical time in this war. It also helped Russia at a time when Putin is increasingly emboldened to menace Europe through acts of sabotage, intimidation and support of the extreme right such as the AfD in Germany. (Recall that Musk has openly supported the AfD.)”

  14. “Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, also helped finance Trump’s inauguration and his ballroom, gave Trump $25 million to settle his lawsuit against Meta for suspending him from its platforms after the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, rolled back content moderation and fact-checking on his platforms, and brought Trump loyalists into Meta’s leadership.

    In return, Trump went along with Zuckerberg and Meta’s wish not to have a federal AI regulator but to rely on “self-policing” and to pressure European and other countries not to impose taxes on digital services.”

In return, Trump has given Cook and Apple critical exemptions from Trump’s sweeping tariffs, allowing them to import electronic components from China.”

  16. “Jeff Bezos gave Melania Trump a $40 million licensing fee for a puff documentary about her (with about $28 million going directly to her) and another $35 million for marketing the movie dud. Bezos also destroyed the integrity of the editorial page of The Washington Post by barring it from endorsing Kamala Harris in 2024 and from writing anything negative about capitalism under Trump.

    In return, Trump has given Bezos and his Amazon carte blanche to monopolize online retailing along with federal contracts to provide cloud infrastructure for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the National Security Agency (NSA).”

    “Just three billionaires have donated more than $600 million to Republican candidates in the 2026 midterms, an all-time record.

    One of them — Elon Musk — sank more than a quarter of a billion dollars into getting Trump elected in 2024 and is sinking even more into the 2026 midterms.

    In return, Trump has allowed Musk to extend his monopoly on satellite communications, financed largely by taxpayers — even giving him the power to disable Ukraine intelligence. Trump also allowed Musk’s DOGE to rampage through federal databases and gather information on every American.”
