  1. Starting to think that using #OpenHAB for my "smarthome" for my case is kinda overkill…

I have some sensors (temperature and humidity), some reed switches for windows and possibly I'll add thermostats for heating batteries (because here, even with 0°C outside, the central heating works for all the money and it is impossible to sleep and work without all opened windows). All things are using #ZigBee so my #server uses some ZigBee coordinator dongle and #zigbee2mqtt with some MQTT broker inside. I already able to read all necessary data from sensors by reading the right MQTT topics.

And the OpenHAB just communicates with my MQTT broker and displays some nice widgets on the Web UI. This is cool, because I don't need to think about how to work with MQTT and how to output data — all somehow works "by magic".

But the price is very big. The OpenHAB eats near 600 MB of RAM and swaps a lot (near 1 GB for now). It is a largest memory consuming service in my server, which has only 2 GB of RAM (and a RAM prices already increased here :drgn_sigh: ). And also it's sandbox takes near 3.5 GB of SSD space.

So, do I really need not to think about how it all works under the hood while wearing out my SSD or get some services OOMed if I disable swap and start e.g. using BorgBackup? Looks like the game is not worth the candle. I can literally pick #EclipseMosquitto #C library, unwrap some memories about how to use CGI and get the same nice page with sensors data and some logic inside. But with a waaaay less memory footprint and with possibility to open this page from #Dillo :drgn_happy_blep:

  3. @ironicbadger, borgbackup backup of all my servers in my home and on the Internet to rsync.net which is then rsync’ed down to my main home server running . All Linux computers run ZFS, make backups using and send to that server using . I’m planning to set up a personal remote backup at my in-laws’ place which provides a ZFS send target over

  4. Today's one liner: zfs list -t snapshot -o name -s creation | tail -n 1 | sed 's/zpool\/home@//g'. This is to ensure I backup from the latest snapshot in my borg backup setup. Had to revamp the script after migrating to #sanoid developed by @jimsalter . Maybe now I can get my head around zfs replications then setup syncoid. Wait I got to do test restores from the backups. Derp.

  8. After a lot of mucking around and research, I managed to restore my #fairphone 4's data after I had to wipe it in order to restore fingerprint functionality.

So far, I do not appear to have lost anything apart from the expected banking apps 2FA and the like.

Even the data of #AegisAuthenticator could be restored; only had to re-enable the (now working) biometrics.

I'll properly publish my android backup tooling soon (spoiler: #adb #nix #borgbackup #ssh).

  10. Yesterday I replaced one of the two 4TB HDDs in my #Synology #DS218 #NAS, I checked before and found it is #hotswap, so I just removed the first #HDD and waited what would happen.
As soon as I removed the first 4 TB HDD from the NAS it started beeping every 3 seconds. I then went to my computer, checked what was the reason, there was an alarm "degraded storage" and a button to stop the beeping. It was only an alarm it seems, so not an error, the currently running #borgbackup just continued.
So I took the frame with the 4 TB HDD, removed the HDD and put in the new 8 TB HDD I bought. Then I went back to the NAS, slided in the frame, checked on the computer screen and selected "repair storage pool", it asked if I wanted to add the new HDD and started cloning the RAID 1.
At that time the NAS was 2.44 TB storage used, which translates to about 70%. I the morning (about 9h later) the process was finished. I then started an extended #SMART check, which is still running now and also started a manual "Data Scrubbing", which should check that all data is mirrored, this process is already finished.
So as soon as the SMART check is done I will replace the second HDD and will then have the new storage capacity of 8 TB.

I plan to use the two HDDs in external cases for another fan less computer which I want to used for my #Nextcloud on a #Docker based home server.

So the point of this post is to say how easy to use those #Synology #NAS are. Great and easy to use product.
  11. Today is - a good day to:
    - start using borg backup
    - upgrade to borg 1.4.4
    - actually test a restore
    - play with the latest borg2 beta
    - contribute to borg development
    - donate to the borg project
    - give borgbackup a star on github
    - update the borg packages, if you maintain some
    - contribute to some project borg backup depends on
    - contribute to some project that uses borg backup

  12. Vacation project started: migrating my Nextcloud AIO from an aging Synology NAS, where the outdated software is becoming more and more of an issue, to a refurbished ThinkCentre.

This is probably the most exciting moment: will the restore finish successfully from my remote Borg backup? Not that I have any doubts, but staring at a screen, knowing it will take some time, is still somehow thrilling. 🤞

  13. Farewell, #FreeNAS 😈

After many years of using FreeNAS as my main #homelab driver (starting with version 0.6 in 2008), it's time to say goodbye.
Before I extended my tech stack to #Proxmox, #Ansible, and #Docker, I ran all services like #Nextcloud and #HomeAssistant in jails. Lately, I've been using #TrueNAS only for storage, but transitioning my #ZFS data-pool to a VM with #Systemd offers more flexibility and exciting possibilities like #BorgBackup.

  15. I don't really know how Pika Backup interacts with the borg integrity check thing and BorgBase has been giving me warnings about lack of post-quantum key exchange for a while. This is fine when doing backups but integrity checks say that it failed. I found the Pika Backup log file in "~/.var/app/org.gnome.World.PikaBackup/config/pika-backup/history.json" and the only stuff is the warnings just like the UI popup (search for "check"). Is it just a confusing UI thing?

  16. Achievement unlocked 😂 Neben dem Backup auf einer lokalen Festplatte und dem NAS heute auch testhalber mal ein großes Offsite Backup mit einer @hetzner Storagebox, #borgbackup und #pikabackup eingerichtet.

  17. For some reason PikaBackup doesn't tell Borg to back up included folders in otherwise-excluded locations and I don't know why. I might have to just work with Borg manually or modify the config file for my backups to get this to work. From a few web searches I did, it looks like this should work with Borg. I could tell because there's a folder that's entirely missing even though I want to do one subfolder. There's symlinks I could do instead, though, as I saw suggested.

  19. @RadioAzureus

BareOS is a pretty solid backup solution, but it is probably more useful in larger environments, especially if tape-based storage is used.

I've used it for file-based storage, and that ended up quite cumbersome - and it was too easy to get a valid retention setup - resulting in actually not being able to recover data. So be very careful setting it up and read the docs very carefully.

I switched to @borgmatic for servers which builds on @borgbackup. That will get you started quickly and is really solid. For desktop clients, I can recommend #PikaBackup, which also builds on BorgBackup.

Using the command="BORG_SERVE_CMD_WITH_OPTIONS", from="IP_ADDRESS", restrict feature in the ~/.ssh/authorized_keys together with the --restrict-to-repository option in borg serve, you can have a single Unix account on the backup server using unique/independent SSH keys per server/user - and they will not get access across each other's pools. In addition, each backup repository uses their own encryption keys.

Borgmatic will do the storage pool retention for you automatically and ensure you won't end up with a useless storage repository.

Just to be sure/safe, this is what I see when I do borg list:

borg list /Backup/backup-desk7802-m330625::5ad87f-a8ac0d91 | grep geodb

    lrwxrwxrwx user grp 23 Fri, 2025-01-17 11:31:14 home/user/geodb -> /hdd/dados/geodb

I understand then that I'm saving the link, not the data. Correct?

What is throwing me off is that using #PikaBackup I can look at the archive and it has the link. If I click on it, I see it's contents. It's probably looking at the data on disk then.

  21. I just started using #PikaBackup on my #ubuntu desktop. I'm backing up my home dir. But inside it I have a couple of symlinks that point to directories in another hard drive. Does #BorgBackup and #PikaBackup save the data on those symlinks? How do I check that?
