Decided to give #PikaBackup a little donation today. Simply because it's an awesome backup client which just works smoothly - even as a Flatpak application. Including doing backup jobs automatically in the background.

It is an incredibly easy backup application to use, compared to most other alternatives. It backs up the data you would expect it to backup. And accessing your backup data is super easy.

This is simply how a backup tool should work. Simple to install, setup and configure ("Backup" tab in the app). Runs easily automatically (visit the "Schedule" tab). And super easy to dive into your backup data ("Archive" tab)

If you're on a platform where PikaBackup is supported, look no further! And the really nice icing is that it is just a GUI wrapper around @borgbackup. So you have more ways to access your backup data, even if PikaBackup would fail helping you out (like, if your GUI desktop is inaccessible).

And since PikaBackup has saved me a few of times, making it easy to restore files I "destroyed" ... I just felt they really deserved a donation today. PikaBackup has saved my time and quite some extra work.

Had some more time to play around with the newly acquired #PineNote from @pine64

I got a new user account setup using systemd-homed which gives you an encrypted storage for that user. This will require you to log in with a password each time you fire it it up. I consider that a good thing! I also registered my public SSH keys into the systemd-userdb, which then allows me to log into the device with this user account. During the SSH login, you'll be asked for a password too - which is used to decrypt the home directory. Logging out, and the home directory is locked again.

Also played around with various apps, especially #Xournal++ and #Rnote. Both highly capable.

What currently irks me the most is that the #GNOME desktop environment is really not designed for monochrome displays. There are so many different shades of grey everywhere making it really hard to read the screen. This is even with "High Contrast" enabled. GNOME really need a different working mode for eInk displays.

#Flatpak seems to work fine, but recommend to install apps using the command line and add the --user argument to flatpak install. The user data partition has more storage space available.

Next up will be to get #Syncthing and #OpenVPN setup properly (openvpn3-client installed easily). Considering if I want to setup e-mail on this device or not. With that plus backup (I'll be using #PikaBackup) set up, its getting ready for some real daily use.

I've set it up for my mum. Now, I'd really like to be able to monitor that backups are humming along nicely, and be warned if they failed. Anyone managed that?

I don't really know how Pika Backup interacts with the borg integrity check thing and BorgBase has been giving me warnings about lack of post-quantum key exchange for a while. This is fine when doing backups but integrity checks say that it failed. I found the Pika Backup log file in "~/.var/app/org.gnome.World.PikaBackup/config/pika-backup/history.json" and the only stuff is the warnings just like the UI popup (search for "check"). Is it just a confusing UI thing?

#PikaBackup #Borg #BorgBackup

I don't really know how Pika Backup interacts with the borg integrity check thing and BorgBase has been giving me warnings about lack of post-quantum key exchange for a while. This is fine when doing backups but integrity checks say that it failed. I found the Pika Backup log file in "~/.var/app/org.gnome.World.PikaBackup/config/pika-backup/history.json" and the only stuff is the warnings just like the UI popup (search for "check"). Is it just a confusing UI thing?

• Mini-PC (Serveur) : Snapshots BTRFS quotidiens du volume @Docker + Copie rsync sur disque externe via script automatisé.

• PC Fixe : #PikaBackup pour une sauvegarde chiffrée et versionnée du /home (hors caches et données Nextcloud qui sont sur un disque interne dédié) sauvegardé vers Nextcloud.

• #Fairphone 6 @e_mydata : SeedVault pour la sauvegarde des données d'applications vers @nextcloud (via @davx5app )

@mikix Congrats! 🥳 As a regular #Restic user I'm gonna check this out. 🙂

It's kind of funny that #Linux got more user friendly and secure #Backup solutions than #Windows. 😅

I wish though I could recommend a platform agnostic solution like yours (and #PikaBackup).

A question about backups. Is there anything wrong with using something like Pika Backup and have scheduled (daily) backups saved to a folder synced to the cloud using something like pCloud?

This being combined with less frequent manual backups to an external drive.
