Farewell, #FreeNAS 😈
After many years of using FreeNAS as my main #homelab driver (starting with version 0.6 in 2008), it's time to say goodbye.
Before I extended my tech stack to #Proxmox, #Ansible, and #Docker, I ran all services like #Nextcloud and #HomeAssistant in jails. Lately, I've been using #TrueNAS only for storage, but transitioning my #ZFS data-pool to a VM with #Systemd offers more flexibility and exciting possibilities like #BorgBackup. -
@Linuxkumpel Pop!_OS fand ich immer sehr vielversprechend und reizvoll.
Aufmerksam darauf wurde ich durch Tom von Lawrence Systems noch zu Zeiten als #truenas noch #freenas war.
Allzu gerne wäre ich von #linuxmint zu #popos #System76 gewechselt. Aber es war immer #murks auf der #hardware - trotz aller Bekundungen, super kompatibel zu sein.
Sprachen fehlten, Treiber fehlten usw.
Danach ging das Vertrauen in dieses System in die Hose.
Natürlich liege ich aber mit dieser Einschätzung vollkommen falsch, oder richtig?

So after all that, I managed to get #FreeNAS 11.2 up to 11.3... but when I bring it to 12, it seems to have lots of problems with the config and the middlewared won't even start. I'll probably have to fresh install 12, but to do that I'll have to figure out why VGA and/or the BMC isn't working, since I'm interacting over a serial cable right now...

Frage an die #IT Menschen:
ich habe ein 2TB external HDD. Voller Zeug im #NTFS Format. Ich möchte irgendwie erreichen, dass ich vom Laptop und Handy aus auf die Daten im Heimnetz zugreifen kann (#NAS ). Außerhalb des Hauses brauche ich es nicht.
Zur Verfügung steht ein altes Laptop um irgendein OS draufzuspielen. #FreeNAS und #OVM usw. mögen NTFS nicht oder besser gesagt ist es angeblich schwierig die nötigen Rechte zum Schreiben zu erteilen und andere Sachen die mir jetzt nicht mehr einfallen.Endlich zur Frage: was kann ich tun? Was sollte ich tun? Ich habe keine weitere 2 TB um ein Backup von dem HDD zu machen.

Is it somehow possible to get TrueNAS to run on WiFi?
Yes, I know it's not recommended, yes I know it will be a worse UX than direct ethernet, and yes, I know of wifi->ethernet adapters. I want to know if it is somehow possible to get TrueNAS to support wifi directly, by somehow hacking the required driver support in, or whatever might be necessary.Any hints appreciated!

Days since iXSystem‘s #TrueNAS #SCALE has proven to be an unfinished, unreliable and non-production ready piece of software: 0
It shows problems that had been solved at least a decade ago on TrueNAS CORE, well actually since #FreeNAS.
They‘re basically betting the whole company on their badly communicated, forceful switch to a Linux base.
Should be a huge red flag there when their flagship core product doesn’t provide its core functionality reliably anymore.

Gerade sind die #periodic #snapshot #task|s auf #truenas durchgelaufen. Die #replication tasks haben alle Daten direkt auf eine zweite Instanz #freenas #nas rübergeschoben. Kurz danach hat der #proxmox alle #lxc #container sowie die virtuellen Maschinen #kvm auf den proxmox #backup #server #pbs drauf gepackt.
#DataProtectionNein, sorry, da kann man nicht zugucken, das vollzieht sich alles hinter einer #pfsense #firewall

Spent the day playing with #FreeNAS #TrueNAS & discovered a compatibility point for #Jellyfin. In particular the instruction on using Jails does work, HOWEVER you must use the TrueNAS 13.3 Beta2 or newer version.
The issue is that the jail will get created with #FreeBSD 13.3 RELEASE. The Release version of TrueNAS is FreeBSD 13.1 & fails to start Jellyfin properly. Upon upgrading to this beta things magically worked... 😐🤷🏾♂️

This command did work for me HOWEVER the error is that the PSID needs to be EXACT CASE. Also be careful of 1 and lower case L. Got me a few times.

#iXsystems: No one is being 'marooned' by #Debian focus
From now on iXsystems will develop #TrueNASSCALE faster than #TrueNASCORE (#FreeBSD), with #TrueNAS CORE becoming more of a maintenance product. SCALE is based on Debian #Linux, termed a #scaleout product, and supports #Docker Containers, #Kubernetes, #KVM, #Gluster, and a wider range of hardware than CORE.

@train I've been on Proxmox the last couple years on this box, though I have been running #TrueNASScale, #TrueNASCore, #TrueNAS, #FreeNAS for over a decade....
I am actually quite comfortable with the CLI interface, but having some of the plumbing worked out ahead of time is quite nice.

Any fedizens familiar with installing TrueNAS to Dell EMC Isilon hardware?
Considering doing so with our Isilon cluster at work but not sure if TrueNAS is capable of using all of the hardware or if there are proprietary bits that wouldn't have drivers available (ie the Infiniband backplane connecting our two chassis.)
