Yesterday I replaced one of the two 4TB HDDs in my #Synology #DS218 #NAS, I checked before and found it is #hotswap, so I just removed the first #HDD and waited what would happen.
As soon as I removed the first 4 TB HDD from the NAS it started beeping every 3 seconds. I then went to my computer, checked what was the reason, there was an alarm "degraded storage" and a button to stop the beeping. It was only an alarm it seems, so not an error, the currently running #borgbackup just continued.
So I took the frame with the 4 TB HDD, removed the HDD and put in the new 8 TB HDD I bought. Then I went back to the NAS, slided in the frame, checked on the computer screen and selected "repair storage pool", it asked if I wanted to add the new HDD and started cloning the RAID 1.
At that time the NAS was 2.44 TB storage used, which translates to about 70%. I the morning (about 9h later) the process was finished. I then started an extended #SMART check, which is still running now and also started a manual "Data Scrubbing", which should check that all data is mirrored, this process is already finished.
So as soon as the SMART check is done I will replace the second HDD and will then have the new storage capacity of 8 TB.
I plan to use the two HDDs in external cases for another fan less computer which I want to used for my #Nextcloud on a #Docker based home server.
So the point of this post is to say how easy to use those #Synology #NAS are. Great and easy to use product.
