  1. Just wrapped up a live session with Artur König (linkedin.com/in/datakoenigartu) and @mthierba on #ToolTalk! That was a lot of fun guys, thank you for having me on as a guest, and I'm looking forward to next time! 😊

Here's the link to my new blog post where I explain in detail the #ExternalTool I demonstrated today: How it works, why you should use it, how to install it, etc.:

  5. I'll be attending #PowerBISummit this week. If you'll be there too, hit me up!

    On a related note:
I just wrote a little #UserStyles #CSS snippet to enhance the Power BI Summit website. It dynamically resizes the embedded video player and chat dialog to fit the modal window containing them.

So, if you want to interact with other attendees in the chat AND actually be able to see what's going on in the video at the same time, add this snippet into your favorite UserStyles browser extension and enjoy!

  10. Today, I finished the first phase of a project I've been working on for several months: A fully automated #PowerBI #MicrosoftFabric tenant backup solution, written in #PowerShell.

My key takeaway from this project: Always keep tabs on adjacent #OpenSource projects, and leverage their innovations.

Interesting! I wrote my first program on a #TI82 graphing calculator sometime in the 1990s, so I've never gotten anywhere near "the bare metal" like some of y'all were doing in the 1980s, but I've still ended up with three #RaspberryPi boards, one #Arduino, and two #Luxonis #OpenCV kits, so I must have caught the hardware bug somewhere along the line.

  12. #2023 is almost over, and while there's still *much* more work to do (/sigh/), at least I managed to break my "books read in one year" record for the second year in a row (I read 80 books in 2021, 96 books in 2022, and 111 books in 2023).

Protip: #ShortStories *totally* count as individual #books, so if you're a book or two shy of your #ReadingGoal for the year (and you're into #dystopian #SciFi), snag a copy of "The Collected Stories of #PhilipKDick" from your local library, and prepare to have your brain melted, scrambled, and/or warped, a few dozen pages at a time.

  13. My #Hubitat #HomeAutomation hub recently received a #FirmwareUpdate that enabled a super cool new feature: An interactive #GraphNetwork visualization of the relationships between my #ZWave and #Zigbee devices. My inner #DataViz geek is jumping for joy right now.

Until recently, I'd always been under the impression that #cURL is "just" a #CLI tool for making #WebRequests, and therefore probably quite simple under the hood, with only a few (if any) very small #AttackSurfaces. Then I started following some #infosec / #cybersecurity researchers, and all of a sudden, I started hearing about a new cURL #CVE, almost every week it seemed.

    Two lessons learned:
    1. Nothing is ever as simple as it seems.
    2. Security researchers are unbelievably smart.

  16. I just now finally got around to migrating my #follows, #followers, and #lists from #Twitter to #Mastodon. It was super easy, and the feeling of #liberation is palpable.

I used #Debirdify (debirdify.pruvisto.org/), and I highly recommend it. You simply login on Debirdify with your #birdsite account, select which lists of people you want to migrate, export them as one or more #CSV files, and then import those files in your Mastodon preferences under "Import and export."

Note: The #API that Debirdify uses to export your data for you will be shut off on Thursday, February 9th, and #SpaceKaren might cut it off even sooner than that if he feels like it, so if you've been #procrastinating on this (like I was), get on it immediately!

  17. CW: hate, sexism, violence, denialism

Lots of #MicrosoftDataPlatform folks have been joining dataplatform.social lately, so I took a peek to see what all the fuss is about. By my observations, sysop (and well-known #DataPlatformMVP) @dhmacher runs a tight ship, and the users appreciate it. However, as of this writing, there are no rules against hate speech, sexism, violence, denialism, etc., no Code of Conduct, and no blocked servers. 😟 For everyone's sake, I hope these omissions are corrected ASAP.

I'm not pretending that #CuttingTheCable doesn't involve some sacrifice. There's always some amount of loss involved when switching from one thing to another. There's no such thing as a 100% seamless transition.

However, there are plenty of 100% free sources of quality entertainment out there (#PublicLibraries, anyone?), so the main sacrifice that #CableCutters must make is simply the time it takes them to find and settle into a new entertainment groove.

But since they're already wasting plenty of their precious time #WatchingTV in the first place, I think if they have to spend a few hours finding new sources of entertainment in order to avoid putting money directly into #fascists' pockets, that ought to be an acceptable tradeoff for any reasonable person.

Oh, this must be one of the *early* generations, when the illumination came from a teeny-tiny #incandescent bulb 💡 instead of an #LED.

IIRC, they worked OK(ish) when the battery was still pretty fresh, but as the battery voltage diminished with normal use, the luminosity dropped off precipitously.🔋

But when those LED-illuminated models finally came along... Wowzers! 🤩 If you were looking straight at the watch face when you pressed the illumination button in the middle of the night, you'd temporarily blind yourself. 😵‍💫 Instead, you had to press the button while looking away, then gradually bring the watch into your field of view, so your eyes would have time to adjust. 🫣

    Those were the #GoodOldDays, eh?

    This is fascinating!

I've been studying #Czech, which shares a ton of #phonemes and #vocabulary with other #Slavic languages, but is written with a Latin-based character set (I say "Latin-based" because Czech uses an assortment of #diacritic marks as #pronunciation modifiers on an otherwise standard #Latin character set).

On several occasions, I've come across a #Russian or #Ukrainian word written in its native #Cyrillic script followed by a #phonetic pronunciation guide written in Latin characters, and consequently recognized the word as one that is shared with Czech. Those moments of recognition are just pure #linguistic glee.

He should team up with our dog #LucyFur, who growls menacingly at the USPS truck every day (but only because the driver doesn't actually come inside to give her pets and treats).
