Added some #zwave LR devices (Zooz Titan water shutoff valve, and a few leak sensors). The "scan the QR Code with the #homeassistant app" workflow is just sooo easy.

I will have to communicate with and inside an all-metal barn (only about 20' away). Until I get ethernet in there, I'm going to have to be sneaky with anything wireless.

Another aspect of #Matter which I don’t really like is there are no in-wall devices, like light switches, power sockets and other modules that would otherwise fit into the electrical box.

It’s all a massive afterthought with “smart” bulbs, that you have to always explain you cannot use wall switch now and you have to operate with glued on remote, eating up shitload of batteries…🥹

That’s not that smart, if you ask me…

I saw this at #CES2026 and thought it was cool. A battery-less Z-Wave sensor from WePower. I tried to understand how it works and all I walked away with was "magnets". Something to keep an eye on.

Am Sektionstor der Garage möchte ich mindestens einen Türkontakt anbringen, der Home Assistant meldet, ob das Tor geschlossen ist.

Test mit einem der Funkthermometer auf 433 MHz-Basis, die ich mit einem DVB-T-Empfänger für Home Assistant auslese: Das Thermometersignal kommt bei Platzierung in der Garage leider nicht mehr beim Empfänger dreieinhalb Etagen höher an. Anderen Sensoren wird es mit dieser Funktechnik dann wohl nicht anders ergehen.

Habe ich noch Alternativen zu LoRaWAN, bei denen ich ohne externe Unterstützung auskomme? Z-WAVE, Zigbee, WLAN usw. arbeiten alle mit höheren Frequenzen und ich bräuchte nach meinem Verständnis ja eher niedrigere, um besser durch Böden und Decken zu kommen …

The Costco #ZWave smoke detectors arrived today. I unboxed one and twisted it onto the mounting base, scanned the QR code, and it paired instantly with #HomeAssistant. Great success? These are on sale through the end of the month.

I should have bought some canned smoke! Regardless, I now have a bunch of smoke detectors to replace.

I'm running my VM in proxmox, but I assume that VirtualBox would be just as good.

I didn't mean to sound like I was criticizing your choice to run in docker - I did that for literally years before deciding that not using HAOS was adding more aggravation than it's worth. Some integrations just run better on HAOS or (at least for some 3rd party ones) aren't even tested on anything else.

That said, there are a lot of third party things you can run outside HAOS - I run Node Red, Frigate, zigbee2mqtt, zwaveJS and mosquitto in independent docker containers on other hosts and have HAOS connect to them.

It sounds like you have a lot of interesting hardware in your existing automation system that may or may not have integrations already.

One way to work around that would be to run an MQTT server like mosquitto in a docker container, then update your existing bash scripts write data to MQTT entities so HA can read the entities.

If you format the MQTT entities right, HA will automatically discover them as devices or sensors without you having to create custom MQTT sensors. That auto-discoverability format is a little finicky, but if you're comfortable with python I wrote (with a lot of recent improvement by Steffan Pankratz) a library that makes writing automatically discoverable entities easier.

My home assistant server is in my basement. My zwave and zigbee meshes were both having weird intermittent issues until I put the dongles on 10 foot long extension cables and attached them to the rafters above the server rack.

I made sure to place them so they were each almost directly underneath a powered device so that the first hop would only be about 3 feet.

Once I did that, the meshes stopped having any more weird issues.

Are you using the built-in Zwave or zwave-js? I run zwaveJS and it has been reliable for me.

Extra bonus was that since I run it in docker I can run it on a different host than the proxmox node that #HAOS runs on.

Потом — кабели, щитки, Modbus, Wiren Board, Sprut.Hub. В какой-то момент автоматизация опутала весь дом: от света в туалете до пылесоса и бризера. И при этом я старался, чтобы все работало надежно, не зависело от облаков и не вызывало неприятия у семьи (ну… почти всегда). Эта статья — мой личный путь. Immer wieder die Hersteller Clouds. Aber bei Devolo gibt es wenigstens einen Ausweg. Wer monatlich Geld bei einem alternativen Cloudanbieter zahlen will kann ein Zwave Gateway und eine Smarthome Zentrale nutzen. Aber klar das ist mit Aufwand verbunden.

nun geht es also zuende, irgendwie war es abzusehen: #Devolo kündigt ihre #Smarthome Unterstützung ab. Die Zentrale war nur über den Online-Dienst konfigurierbar. Und da war, ehrlich gesagt, die Bedienung ziemlich umständlich, und die Weiterentwicklung schon lange eingestellt.

Nun werde ich entweder eine neue #zwave -Zentrale erwerben müssen, oder den Rummel neu denken. Zigbee wollte ich nie, vielleicht hat "threads" und "Matter" mehr zu bieten?

Anyone know a good smart lock that doesnt require an app for setup? The latest #Nuki #HAPodcast episode got me wanting smart locks but the app requirement makes it a non-starter!

I'm looking at setting up #alarmo to replace an ADT system. The software side looks easy, but I'd like a hardware recommendation for a keypad. I'd prefer #zigbee but I have a #zwave mesh too.

Right now I'm thinking of a Ring v2 for the keypad and Aquara contact sensors for the doors and windows.

#homeAssistant shenanigans continues. I had to cut in a deeper box due to the size of these #zooz switches, and ended up just going with a 3 gang due to all the other wires that came into the box (2 separate outlet runs also exit here).
I mostly like these switches, but I’m not crazy about the little delay that’s caused by the switch waiting to detect a double-tap, and I’m not finding a way to disable it. It’s a shame, ‘cause both #zwave and WiFi coms are really snappy.
I will die mad about the aluminum wire in this house (and hopefully not -From- it!). Fortunately I’ve seen Noalox on any re-work, and I’m being super diligent about using it as well.
I know there’s mixed feelings about #wago connectors for line voltage. I’m going to keep an eye on them, but they were a lot easier than wire nuts, as specially since I didn’t have a lot of slack to work with.
There was no way I could have crammed all this into a 2 gang box, and I’m glad I didn’t try.

Before I go old testament on this #ecobee for dropping their API access, are there any known workarounds for integrating it with #HomeAssistant without relying on #HomeKit ?

I have a basic stat that supports #ZWave, but would lose out on the remote probes feature which sadly I'm pretty invested in.

Hmm, maybe someone has written a system to replicate the ecobee's remote probes features within HA using generic temperature sensors?

Anyone seeing zwave errors in their home assistant logs? Been getting the below error a lot recently for some reason. No dead nodes or anything. I have the Zooz ZST39 controller with the latest firmware and am using zwave-js. It seems to just randomly have issues sending commands in some automations and they are only sending a few at that time.

I can't find anything online and it appears contacting wink will not help me any as they are now some sort of subscription only service. Any help is appreciated.

If you have the #Zooz smoke alarm sensor, it may be worth updating it to the latest firmware.

I had an issue where it would go offline every now and then. Discovered they have a new version of the firmware that may address this issue.

Its always good to review the firmware updates every now and then on devices.
