  1. I squeezed in a little #birding this morning with a visit to Black Hole Marsh ( #Seaton , #Devon ). A Little Stint had turned up there on its way south. This diminutive wader was a delight to watch through the 'scope as it scurried about feeding. The young Avocet were still about (remember - the first to be born in Devon?) as well as Greenshank, Redshank and Common Sandpiper. All in all a nice trip.

  2. Whilst there is only one species of #Kingfisher in the UK, I saw seven in #Uganda. From the Giant (huge!) to the Pygmy (small!). I hadn't realised that there were Kingfishers whose favoured habitat was forest / woodland until my trip. Every day is a school day, right?

Here is a video of a Woodland Kingfisher preening.

  3. After the excitement of the Shoebill, it was time to look at other species. On the way back across Lake Victoria to Entebbe, a magnificent African Fish Eagle (Haliaeetus vocifer) perched up ahead of us; the boatmen cut his engine and we drifted back to look at it.

  4. Spent a splendid three hours on a wildlife cruise on the river #exercise starting from #Exmouth. Lucky with the weather - bright, blue sky and no rain. Plenty of birds to see and three Grey and one Common seal.

If you ever visit #Devon , I can recommend a trip with stuartlinecruises.co.uk . You can even buy (or reserve in advance) a proper Devon pasty onboard.

  7. H has already seen a Barn Owl so wasn't fussed when one turned up; a fabulous sight as it hunted over Exminster Marshes. So much fun with him as he got used to using a 'scope. Lovely hour spent with him. He did get a little cold 😂 #ExminsterMarshes #Granddad #BarnOwl #YoungBirder #Devon

  8. If you ever get the chance to go out with Dave on Kellys' Hero (from #Brixham), take it. This morning's three hour trip around Lyme Bay had good weather, great company and some fine wildlife. Bottnose Dolphin, Harbour Porpoise, Grey Seal, Purple Sandpiper, Great Northern Diver and a pair of Peregrine. Three hours well spent.

  9. No birding or wildlife stuff for me yesterday as the first pre-season game at St James Park took place before it all gets real next Saturday.

Exeter took on Eastleigh. One of the funniest things I've seen at a game was this moment when Millenic Alli and Reece Cole played 'rock-scissors-paper' to see who would take a penalty. Cole won and Cole scored.

  10. Devon and Cornwall have gone #Hoopoe mad! They're popping up all over the place. Before the Exeter City game v Wrexham, I had time to nip down to #Seaton Bowling Club to see one in glorious sunshine.

  11. I spent most of the last day of 2024 on trains. The rest of it was spent looking at Alders, a sewage treatment works and a little yellow bird.

No photos of the American Yellow Warbler because I was too busy looking. Have some trains instead.

  12. Any Tortoise fans out there? Here’s an Angulate (aka Bowsprit) Tortoise - probably the only wild #tortoise I’ll ever see! Spotted at a picnic stop near the Harold Porter Botanical Garden.

  19. If you want a decent photo of the Marsh Sandpiper at Black Hole Marsh, Seaton you'll have to look elsewhere. Nonetheless, a cracking bird to watch and with some great laughs in the hides too.

Also seen, Spotted Redshank, 2 Little Stint & a Wasp Spider.

  21. Up at 03:45 for a trip to #Dorset Good views of #Nightingale. Garden Warbler too. Even managed an atmospheric record shot. Then, later in the afternoon, to #BlackHoleMarsh #Seaton for the Black-winged Stilt; both still present (male & female). #UKBirding #birds #Devon #birdsofmastodon

  22. Dave B and I couldn't find the Rose-coloured Starling that had been seen in #Seaton #Devon so decided to drive on to #Dorset to see if we could see the Holboell's Red-necked Grebe - I'd not heard of this subspecies before today.

The weather in Portland Harbour was not great but id improve during the hour we spent there - however, the good 'scope views did not translate to good camera views 😂
