I love people watching -- and when I'm in a pub, that's almost inevitable.
I recently watched a table opposite me of US Americans, who were clearly here in the UK for the first time, as they seemed rather bewildered. I can completely understand why -- if you're in a foreign country -- even one which speaks native English -- it doesn't make it any easier.
I suppose British pub culture is unique unto itself -- and if you're not used to it, it's going to be weird. A pub isn't a restaurant and therefore some of the expected "rules" don't apply -- at least not consistently.
Take, for example, whether there was table-service or not. In this pub, there isn't -- it's expected you take your order to the bar, and pay for it at the same time. This seemed confusing to the Americans -- and I can understand why if you're always used to being waited on.
Of course -- most of them ordered Fish And Chips, a rite of passage for anyone who's never tried them. I can think of many other places besides this one which do them far better. They neglected to try them with malt vinegar, a missed opportunity!
It was interesting to watch -- I wanted to go up and "help" them, but did not, obviously. I just feel for their situation -- I just hope they weren't under the illusion they were getting the "British" experience, they definitely were not.
I suppose this is the "danger" of travelling -- without the knowledge necessary to work out what the locals do -- you'll fall into these "traps".
I daresay I did exactly the same with with my recent trip to #paris -- c'est la vie, and all that.
I understood the Americans were travelling down to Cornwall, so I hope they enjoy that, and at least eat a #cornish #pasty!

“That strange feeling of pride and hypocrisy when your Norwich born and raised kids finally discover they can eat a #pasty…and shock horror they actually like it!”

Tonight, we cooked pasties from scratch. To be fair, I did hardly any of the work, and making this pastry looked like it took some effort, but it was worth it!
The result wasn't quite a genuine Cornish Pastie, but was still some sort of delicious Englander Root Vegetable Pastry Whatsit.
The recipe was based on the Genuine Cornish Pasty recipe (https://cornishpastyassociation.co.uk/about-the-pasty/make-your-own-genuine-cornish-pasty/). We made some modifications such as increasing the diversity of vegetables, and to make it vegetarian we replaced the lard with butter and the meat with Vegie Delights plant-based mince.

A Cornish Pasty factory has installed a 131.2kw solar system which will supply at least 20% of it's yearly power needs. More impressively, on one very sunny day, it met 98% of their power needs at that point!

Spent a splendid three hours on a wildlife cruise on the river #exercise starting from #Exmouth. Lucky with the weather - bright, blue sky and no rain. Plenty of birds to see and three Grey and one Common seal.
If you ever visit #Devon , I can recommend a trip with https://www.stuartlinecruises.co.uk . You can even buy (or reserve in advance) a proper Devon pasty onboard.

In Newquay in Cornwall in 1906, work began on Trenance Garden’s boating lake, it was created as an unemployment relief measure, and workers were given a pasty a day and a shillings a week to dig it out.
Just over thirty years earlier it was agricultural land and the ‘playground’ of my great great grandmother. It has changed a bit since then of course, but she would still recognise it. Her family home is still there, as is the viaduct that she watched being built. Even in my lifetime, it has not changed at all. It was an exciting place for me as a child and it still holds a special place in my heart today. We could leave my grandparent’s house, walk down the street, descend through a wooded hillside and emerge into a formal garden - how very fortunate I was.
I have visited the gardens nearly every year of my life and that is a long time!
