  1. Is it just me or is the world going mad?

The #IPPR have just released a major report on ill health and its effects on the economy. They acknowledge that things have got much worse since #covid19 came along.

Hell, they even show this graph:

And they make some broadly sensible recommendations, but absolutely none of them is about mitigating the risks of covid.

Recommendations for free vaccines? Nope. Better air quality? Nope. Masking in healthcare settings? Also nope.

I really wouldn't put it past that crazy fucker to want to nuke Iran.

I would like to think that his generals won't let him do that. I hope I'm not overestimating their professionalism.

  4. "Chickenpox vaccines for young children start across UK"

Excellent news. They should have started 25 years ago, of course, but better late than never.

Most children make an uneventful recovery from chickenpox, but some don't, and if you're really unlucky it can be fatal. This will surely save lives.

And even if you avoid serious complications, chickenpox is never fun. The vaccines will avoid a lot of unnecessary suffering and time off work.

OK, we should have been vaccinating kids against chickenpox for at least the last 25 years, but better late than never.

This will prevent a great deal of misery, and even save a few lives. Most kids recover uneventfully from chickenpox (though it's still not fun), but some have serious complications, and in rare cases, they can be fatal. We typically see about 20 deaths per year in the UK.

  14. We ordered some new sofas from John Lewis last month. A few days ago they told us they were ready and will be delivered today. Had a text last night saying they would be delivered between 0846 and 1046 this morning.

And now we've had a phone call saying they won't be. We are assured they have been manufactured, but they don't seem to know where they are. Not even if they were in the UK or waiting to be shipped from China.

I wonder if John Lewis use #AI in their logistics?

  15. I express no opinion on the probability of Letby being able to successfully appeal against her conviction, but I will observe that if she does, then a lot of people who have given evidence to the public inquiry about how she was able to get away with it and why nobody stopped her are going to feel pretty silly.

Yeah, they've got covid jabs in Boots now, for like £99.95 or something, as well as around 80 quid in another pharmacy I can potentially get to (Grewal Chemist in Beeston, Nottingham).

Boots has chickenpox vaccines as well now!

  18. So JVCI are now recommending that from now on, #Covid19 vaccines should be limited to those over 75, care home residents, and people who are immunosuppressed.

The government claims to be worried about the number of people not working because they're on long term sick leave, and yet they don't seem keen to take even the most basic precautions to keep us safe from a disease that can make us long-term sick.

    Absolutely bonkers.

  19. CW: Nurses' and ambulance workers' strikes

The absolute last thing any nurses or ambulance workers want to do is go on strike.

I breaks my heart that 12+ years of Tory running down of the NHS have left the system in such a dreadful state that they are now out of other options.

How many people are dying because of the Tory government?

I have several healthy ones, but then I have this one with many of its leaves going yellow.

What could be wrong with it? Too much/not enough watering? Too much/not enough feeding? Time for repotting? Need to urgently quarantine it away from my other plants?

Your periodic reminder that the UK Parliament has very strict rules about lying. They take these rules very seriously, and you can be kicked out of Parliament and have your pay docked if you break them.

Oh, but just to be clear, it's not lying itself that's forbidden. Oh no. You can lie to your heart's content. No problem at all

It's only calling out lying that's not allowed.

  23. Well fair play to Starmer. I see his background as a human rights lawyer is showing its advantages.

The Tories and Reform have been banging on for ages about how we have too many human rights, but they never specify which of your rights they want to remove.

Starmer has at least specified: he objects to articles 3 and 8 of the ECHR. Good for him.

  24. This is awesome news.

Gene therapy has been around for many years, but early attempts at it were largely unsuccessful.

It now looks like it may be a treatment whose time has finally come.

Obviously this is based on just 1 patient, and we need not only more patients but also much longer follow-up to be sure how useful it will be, but still, this looks really promising.

  25. It's certainly true that the initial #Covid19 vaccine roll-out was phenomenally successful.

But I find it troubling that the government has largely given up on covid vaccines in more recent years.

The vaccines have undoubtedly saved lives, but they don't have a brilliant duration of immunity. Regular boosters are essential to maintain protection.

And regular boosters are no longer available on the NHS for the vast majority of us.

  26. I suppose the Beeb have been stung by recent accusations of bias, so rather than just presenting the views of actual scientists saying that #Covid19 killed lots of people, they need to also have a fucking idiot conspiracy theorist to say that covid was fine and it was just the lockdowns that killed all those hundreds of thousands of people, just for "balance".

  27. Very pleased to see that the government is looking at banning trail hunting.

If there are legitimate devotees of the sport of trail hunting, then tough. They've had 20 years to clean up their act and stop it being used as a cover for illegal fox hunting.

They haven't. Whether that's because they can't or just don't want to, I don't know, but it's irrelevant anyway. Either way, trail hunting still leads to animal cruelty.

  28. Oh FFS. I went onto BBC iPlayer earlier so I could watch one of the curling matches from the #WinterOlympics.

On the same page where you get to pick which program to watch, they tell you what the results are.

Is there really no-one working for the BBC who understands that you don't necessarily want to know the result of a sporting contest before you watch it?

  29. Well that is disturbing. The results of this year's #BugsMatter survey are in, and show a continued decline in flying insect populations in the UK.

Down by 59% since 2021. Now I'm no insect ecologist, but that sounds like a scarily large decline to me.
