  1. I have a little clip-on mirror on my glasses for biking. It's great! I can see most things coming up behind me with very little shifting or turning.

Unfortunately, it also meant yesterday that when the mystery bug made its way over the horizon of my shoulder, a distressingly large part of my field of vision was waving black antennae and legs.

Probably something harmless, and maybe not as big as I thought. But still! 🙀

  2. Currently at Vegan Camp Out festival in #Nottinghamshire. The caravan is full of wee beasties even though we have fly screens on every window and door. How do they do it?

  3. Stupidly early start today but I've managed to finalise our updated antibiotic guidance before clinic, which is a huge weight off my mind.

  4. Overheard in passing in the lab just now:

"...then you strip naked and dance around the fire six times widdershins..."

  5. It's always a good day when you have a clinical situation that doesn't seem to have been reported anywhere in the medical literature, ever.

  6. Haven't activated a Parks On The Air site for far too long. And since the last time bugs have become part of the kit to pack.
Took a while to re-adjust it but my CW was good enough to complete the activation.

  7. Well that is disturbing. The results of this year's #BugsMatter survey are in, and show a continued decline in flying insect populations in the UK.

Down by 59% since 2021. Now I'm no insect ecologist, but that sounds like a scarily large decline to me.

  8. Conversation just now with a lab colleague:

"I found that sample you wanted tested for Hep E"
    "E? A"
    "A? Oh, aye"
    "I? No, A"

  9. Oh, the irony! A Windows 11 security update decided to add 'features' like major bugs. Microsoft is prepping a hotfix, because, you know, security. What's your go-to ritual after a 'critical' update goes sideways?

  10. Today (well, yesterday, but I was busy) is the ten year anniversary of a brand new consultant turning up on the doorstep of the NHS Fife Microbiology lab and timidly asking to join the War On Bugs.

It's been an interesting decade to be a doctor specialising in infections, I have to admit. Maybe too interesting.

And how was this milestone marked?

My swipe card stopped working on the wards. Apparently it does that automatically after ten years. Trying not to take it personally.

  11. Returning from clinic with a fudge donut (donated by a patient) in one hand, and a bone fragment for culture (donated by a different patient) in the other.
