Da habe ich gestern auf dem Rückweg zum Auto am #LaacherSee aber nicht schlecht geschaut. Als kleines Kind wollte ich unbedingt einmal Hirschkäfer sehen, es war mir aber nie vergönnt. Und gestern krabbelt mir dieses durchaus stattliche Kerlchen quasi vor die Füße. 😯

Well that is disturbing. The results of this year's #BugsMatter survey are in, and show a continued decline in flying insect populations in the UK.
Down by 59% since 2021. Now I'm no insect ecologist, but that sounds like a scarily large decline to me.

Today (well, yesterday, but I was busy) is the ten year anniversary of a brand new consultant turning up on the doorstep of the NHS Fife Microbiology lab and timidly asking to join the War On Bugs.
It's been an interesting decade to be a doctor specialising in infections, I have to admit. Maybe too interesting.
And how was this milestone marked?
My swipe card stopped working on the wards. Apparently it does that automatically after ten years. Trying not to take it personally.

One of those teeny tiny little butterflies that might be a sapphire or might not and my only reference for Bhutanese blues doesn't actually show the upper wings for most of the species.
I do love how every flash of blue fluttering by could be something totally new to my eyes.

Stopped to shoot some flowers on the drive today but got distracted by the bees. This little fella was loaded down with pollen sacks but still going in for more.
Dialed in my "birds in flight" custom setting for these shots, because the bees never really sit still. F2.8 with 1/2000th sec exposure and auto ISO.

Ganz fit war er nicht mehr, seine Blütezeit dürfte auch schon vorbei sein. Dennoch habe ich ihn ausgiebig geknipst und gefilmt und mit Hilfe eines Spaziergängers aufgepasst, dass er nicht zu Schaden kommt. Am Ende haben wir ihn vorsichtig auf eine Ast hochgehoben und auf der anderen Wegseite abgesetzt. ☺️
