  1. 💾 From Duplicity to Borg — a backup journey

After more than a decade with Duplicity, I finally switched to BorgBackup — and wow, that difference.

📂 Source data: 719 GB in my /home
    📦 Packed size: 419 GB
📉 Actual storage: 390 GB after compression

That’s more than a 45% reduction, and the upload to remote storage is much faster now.
For someone who handles geospatial and scientific data daily, this is huge.

It’s not just about saving space — it’s about making the workflow lighter, faster, and more sustainable.

🧠 Curious — what backup tools do you trust most?

  7. @wortezimmer Nach meiner Erfahrung, die ich vor wenigen Monaten machte, kommt es auf den Einsatzzweck der ext. FP an.

  12. @musicmatze #Hetzner #StorageBox seems much more convenient, with its #borgBackup support and simple ssh access. #Internxt seems to always need that npm thing installed to do anything.

  13. 2/3 Topics #EU_OS needs help with:

    1) What is the best way to backup user data for Linux EU OS users? gitlab.com/eu-os/eu-os.gitlab. #borgbackup #btrfsbk #btrfs #nextcloud

    2) How can unattended deployment with #foreman look like during pilot stage (thus without reconfiguring the network/DHCP yet)? gitlab.com/eu-os/eu-os.gitlab. #foreman

    3) How can a modern VPN provide extra security for people in home offices or on business trips? gitlab.com/eu-os/eu-os.gitlab. #tailscale #headscale #rosenpass #wireguard #openvpn

  14. 🏠 Homelab Backup Evolution! 🏠

Following the "3-2-1 is the minimum" rule, I've expanded my VPS container backup strategy:

✅ Hetzner Cloud (Borg) → Offsite long-term storage
✅ Synology NAS (rsync) → Local fast recovery

The new setup does nightly automated syncs of all /opt/containers/ data to my Synology - with deduplication and all the bells and whistles! 📦

Particularly clever: hardlinks for space-efficient snapshots and morning email reports. Now I know right with my coffee ☕ whether all backups ran cleanly.

Lesson learned: Cloud-only is good, but having a local NAS mirror for quick restores is pure gold! 💪

How do you solve this in your setups? Also multi-tier or everything to cloud?

  15. For some reason PikaBackup doesn't tell Borg to back up included folders in otherwise-excluded locations and I don't know why. I might have to just work with Borg manually or modify the config file for my backups to get this to work. From a few web searches I did, it looks like this should work with Borg. I could tell because there's a folder that's entirely missing even though I want to do one subfolder. There's symlinks I could do instead, though, as I saw suggested.

  16. Ah, #BorgBackup, for those who like their backups served with a side of #jargon salad and a sprinkle of #buzzword dressing. 🌟✨ Because who doesn’t want to store their digital clutter under layers of fancy-sounding tech that only 3 people on Reddit pretend to understand? 🤖🔒 Enjoy feeling like a tech wizard while using something that’s basically a glorified zip file with a superiority complex. 🎩🧙‍♂️

  20. What’s better than a little robot to take care of your borgbackup warehouse ?

Yes, BorgWarehouse now has a logo and a new homepage! 🥳

The work continues at the heart of the software to bring new features soon. Stay tuned!

  21. With the latest version 2.4 of #BorgWarehouse which adds REST API management, I've been able to integrate the real-time status of a #BorgBackup repository into my #HomeAssistant dashboard.

I'm thinking of doing a blog post about it soon 😀

  22. finally got around to installing #vorta on my new machine for #borgbackup. One less thing to be anxious about.

Figuring out good excludes is always a little time consuming, but I'm just happy I have something in place.

  23. I’ve finally completed setting up my #backup configuration for my Mac. I’m using #BorgBackup (with #Vorta client) and keeping a backup on a USB disk and a second one on the #cloud using #BorgBase

I backup daily (keeping last 7 days, 4 weeks and 12 months) and my backups are incremental and #encrypted

Thanks @lazza for the suggestion 🙏

  24. After a lot of mucking around and research, I managed to restore my #fairphone 4's data after I had to wipe it in order to restore fingerprint functionality.

So far, I do not appear to have lost anything apart from the expected banking apps 2FA and the like.

Even the data of #AegisAuthenticator could be restored; only had to re-enable the (now working) biometrics.

I'll properly publish my android backup tooling soon (spoiler: #adb #nix #borgbackup #ssh).

  25. Finally got around to posting my blog about begining to migrate my to from using and 😃

Still not done testing, but the process has been very simple for now.
