@OnceUponAGoblin I'm quite happy with a simple #samba share that runs on an old MacBook in my closet that I access via self hosted #netbird, and back up to #borgbase.

So far it works even better than gdrive. Until, of course, a power cut happens while I'm on vacation, but I plan to solve that scenario by asking a friend to come over to enter the boot password :)

Ich bin schon mehrfach mit der cloud instanz umgezogen, verschiedene eigene Hardware verschiedene VPS Provider. Immer über dasselbe Repository bei BorgBase.com.

@rameez I'm currently noticing similar performance problems with #borg backups on the #Hetzner #StorageBox.

While a 'borg info' against the #BorgBase server is blazing fast, it takes a very, very long time with Hetzner.

But okay, if you know about it, you can prepare for it. And these are unattended backups via cron, where a minute or ten doesn't matter.

With Hetzner, I know that the servers are located in the EU and it's not AWS or Azure as the backend. 👍🏼

karena #gotosocial 0.17-RC01 masih masalah dengan sqlite di #BSD sehingga livestream gagal membaca database, ane akhirnya backup data dengan restic dan data disimpan ke #borgbase.

Borgbase memberikan storage gratis 10Gb. Lumayan untuk coba mencoba restic.

setelah bikin repository (ane pilih server di EU), kemudian copy alamat dari repository yang disediakan dalam format `rest:///t6420:AkhfsnKapoirahld.repo.borgbase.com`

kemudian di console VPS, ane matikan dulu gotosocial untuk menjaga integritas data.

kemudian

$ export RESTIC_REPOSITORY=rest:///t6420:AkhfsnKapoirahld.repo.borgbase.com
$ restic init
$ restic backup sqlite.db
```
maka restic akan membaca file dan melakukan kompresi, jika tidak disebut secara spesifik maka kompresi yang dipilih adalah auto. Sebagai perbandingan data sqlite.db ane sekitar 1.7 Gb dan kemudian dikompresi menjadi 489Mb.

gunakan `restic snapshot` untuk melihat dan mengkonfirmasi proses upload/backup.

kedepannya, ane mau bikin script backup otomatis. Bisa dengan shell script atau pakai python. Perlu dicoba.

Over the past few months, I've switched my #backups to @borgbackup. The blazing speed convinces me. @borgmatic has made my own scripts superfluous. The icing on the cake is the offsite backup to #BorgBase. I take my hat off to the developers of these #awesome tools and their comprehensive documentation.

@kolev No. It will break down somewhere. Disks will be left behind or misplaced etc.

I’ve finally completed setting up my #backup configuration for my Mac. I’m using #BorgBackup (with #Vorta client) and keeping a backup on a USB disk and a second one on the #cloud using #BorgBase

I backup daily (keeping last 7 days, 4 weeks and 12 months) and my backups are incremental and #encrypted

Got BorgMatic backups running on my workhorse server that hosts postmarks, gotosocial, owncast and a few websites. They are being pushed to the cloud (BorgBase) and to an attached storage drive.

Backing up daily, weekly, and monthly via cron job.

Verified backups can be restored. 🎉

Spent some time learning about BorgMatic, Borg Backup, and BorgBase. I'm borged out. Made some progress, not as much as I'd hoped.

Running this instance in a container and then changing some of the default volume locations was a mistake. Lesson learned.

Just extended my #borgbase subscription.
250GB of storage (mind you that #borg compresses and deduplicates) for $24/year.

If easy, dependable and end-to-end encrypted backups aren't worth $2/moth, I don't know what is.

@benjaminhollon That plan was originally 100GB (like 1y ago) when I started to use #BorgBase.

Then one day an email flies into my inbox, that says that they've increased that plan to 250GB. I don't have to do anything, my plan is just bigger now. No additional costs.

@Jyoti I use #BorgBase for my stuff. It's affordable and easy to use.

#MastoAdmins - what are your preferred ways of backing up your instance?

I use #Borg to back up my server 4 times a day to #BorgBase, but that doesn't do a particularly clean snapshot of the Postgres database, and I'm also concerned that this isn't as frequent as I want.

Any #FediTips on this?

#PSA: if you're running your own instance (or really ANYTHING), please do your #backups right.

I'm a chaotic person traveling a lot esp. now, and a good #backup strategy has saved my dumb backend countless times.

3-2-1 rule rocks, and I can recommend #borgmatic #borgbackup. #restic also works good for #Windows machines, but there is also #Kopia that I'm testing now.

You can always get some cheap storage with any provider you like - #Backblaze #Borgbase #rsync.net etc.
