  11. 🗂️ My computer stores everything I work with: drafts, notes, datasets, scripts, models, simulations results, old archives — and, of course, a ridiculous amount of literature. 😅

Recently I discovered something that felt like unlocking a hidden level: local full-text search.

I’d used basic search tools before, but then I tried Recoll — an open-source search engine for UNIX-like systems — and it completely changed how I navigate my research files.

It honestly feels like I found a new kind of “computer game,” and I’ll probably keep playing with it for months. 🤣

  16. 📚 Fifteen years of my personal BibTeX database!

Fifteen years ago, I started keeping my own BibTeX database — just a plain text file edited manually, line by line.
Later I switched to JabRef, and everything became much smoother!

Over the years, the database has grown to almost 2,000 entries — and it’s no longer just a list of references, but a snapshot of the knowledge I’ve interacted with.
Because I always fill in the Abstract field, full-text search now lets me literally “remember everything.”

Among all my long-term “personal productivity” projects, this one has turned out to be the most valuable.

  21. 💾 From Duplicity to Borg — a backup journey

After more than a decade with Duplicity, I finally switched to BorgBackup — and wow, that difference.

📂 Source data: 719 GB in my /home
    📦 Packed size: 419 GB
📉 Actual storage: 390 GB after compression

That’s more than a 45% reduction, and the upload to remote storage is much faster now.
For someone who handles geospatial and scientific data daily, this is huge.

It’s not just about saving space — it’s about making the workflow lighter, faster, and more sustainable.

🧠 Curious — what backup tools do you trust most?

  31. The bad news is that some of DR DOS 5.0 is written in C; and the primary programming is being done in England. I've noticed that just about every time I find a large program with known glitches that no one seems able to fix, that program is written in C and is likely written by a programming team in a remote location.
