Some transport simulation experimentation this rainy Sunday.

A strategy to improve walking efficiency is to reduce traffic signal cycle times to provide pedestrians with more opportunities to cross a road each hour. This is often opposed by the transport engineering profession as longer cycle times are seen to provide a higher throughput for motor vehicle traffic.

I’ve held the hypothesis that shorter cycles may actually be beneficial for motor traffic on inner-city-style roads that don’t have turning lanes. The idea being that turning vehicles would have more opportunities to clear the intersection (on the yellow light) if the cycle time was shorter.

Using SUMO (free and open source software), I put the hypothesis to the test.

For an intersection with very even demand, a 120-second cycle performed best for motor vehicles (this is the typical maximum cycle time used in Victoria, except for special cases). However, when the cycle time is reduced, the bare minimum of a 44-second cycle performed better than 100, 80, and 60-second cycles.

This suggests that to balance walking and motor vehicle outcomes, somewhere in the middle may not be the best option!

Even so, all the tested options were rather close, and a 44-second cycle was only an additional 99 seconds of delay for motor traffic across the hour compared with a 120-second cycle.

Caveats: The simulation used even traffic demands from all directions. This is unlikely to reflect reality. Also, I didn’t interrogate the simulation closely for this simple test. There may be quirks included that could change the outcome if discovered and removed.

Subject: CoderNet IRC access and details
For: #irc #socialmedia #selfhosting
Image: An IRC exchange from today [posted with permission]
Short link: https://dansu.org/codernet-irc

IRC chat is due for a comeback. It’s the cat’s meow 🐈‍⬛ relative to Discord and other corporate chats 💬 #IRC is Free, Open Source, light, portable to nearly every device, and everything that you type doesn’t go into #AI. 😈

Some Mastodon 🦣 and Akkoma setups support #chat in the Fediverse client. However, that feature isn’t in wide use yet. IRC is the more standard option.

I was in #Freenode IRC off and on for a decade [2008 to 2017]. I’ve run a separate network, CoderNet, from 2012 to date on different dedis and VPSes.

Subsequent to an update on October 24, 2026, CoderNet can be reached as follows:

N1) any IRC client using secure mode, host irc.oldcoder.org, port 6697
or
N2) any IRC client using insecure mode, host irc.oldcoder.org, port 6667
or
N3) any major web browser, go to either irc.oldcoder.org or irc.minetest.org

If you make it into CoderNet, you can IRC PM me using:

/query OldCoder Hello

My hours excluding errands, rest breaks, and trips are typically noon til midnight Pacific Time. Initial responses typically take from 1 minute to 1 hour.

For options N1 and N2, the recommended GUI client for Linux and Windows is ZoiteChat:

https://zoitechat.org/

CLI IRC clients include irssi and weechat. For Android, Revolution IRC is a free GUI client that works well for me. I don’t have a position on clients for Apple devices.

Option N3 lets you to connect to IRC using just a web browser. The IRC GUI in this case is The Lounge. For more information about The Lounge, visit:

https://thelounge.chat/

The sample screenshot is of a IRC PM exchange with MURB, who was actually one of the first people that I chatted with in IRC 18 years ago. MURB is in his late 30s now and disabled but looking to be productive in #gamedev.

The IRC software stack used by CoderNet on the server side is as follows

ngircd - core IRC daemon
nginx - web server
lego - certs generator
anope - IRC services such as NickServ
thelounge - IRC web GUI
ocbip - a fork of the bip IRC bouncer

Presently, the network is running on a low-end Debian box. [IRC needs very little in the way of hardware.]

The Fediverse weblog site for CoderNet is located at:

https://dansu.org/

Additional technical notes:

a. CoderNet uses valid certs as opposed to self-signed certs, so cert error messages shouldn’t be an issue.

b. IRC visitors don’t need to install The Lounge in order to use it. Nothing but a web browser is required.

c. The bouncer feature mentioned on The Lounge home page isn’t supported by the CoderNet setup. I use ocbip as my own bouncer and I could set it up for other people in some cases.

d. If anonymous is a priority, connect to CoderNet in secure mode, IRC PM me as explained above, and ask for a Freenode-type cloak.

e. The Edgy channels shown in the screenshot are in Edgy McEdge’s IRC network as opposed to CoderNet. I’m not Edgy, though I’ve known her since 2018.

To see a larger version of the screenshot, in most web browsers, right-click on the image, select “Open in New Window”, and resize the new window.

The sun climbs slow above the hill,
The morning air is crisp and still.
I pull my sweater tight and warm,
To step away from winter's storm.

The frost is white upon the grass,
It crunches underneath as I pass.
The maple tree has turned to gold,
A story of the season told.

I walk along the dusty lane,
Past fields of dried and gathered grain.
The sky is painted soft and blue,
With light that feels both old and new.

ARD: "CSU-Chef zum Kampf gegen die AfD
:

https://www.zdfheute.de/politik/deutschland/csu-parteitag-soeder-muenchen-100.html

Problem ist nur:
"Gemäßigte", prominente AfD-Miglieder haben diese Partei längst verlassen oder wurden gegangen:

* Bernd Lucke
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernd_Lucke

* Jörg Meuthen
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/J%C3%B6rg_Meuthen

* Frauke Petry
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frauke_Petry

* Olaf Henkel 2015 [!]: 'Wir haben ein Monster geschaffen!' Henkel sieht in AfD eine 'NPD light'."
https://www.n-tv.de/politik/Henkel-sieht-in-AfD-eine-NPD-light-article16309276.html

I *might* actually pitch something to Aftermath! I stumbled upon this local punk retro gaming repair place and so I did the old journalism thing and spent days with them as they repaired old consoles for people. I interviewed a few people between the repairs and the observations. it's full Gonzo reporting though, but still, couldn't hurt! Only thing is, Aftermath has a pitch first, write if approved submission process. I like it the other way where I submit fully completed drafts/narratives. I feel like a pitch first, then green light, then write approach throws me off and influences how I write. My preferred way, there's no expectations. Only editing. Still, editors say it's harder to edit someone especially if their writing style is vastly different from the publication, which is the case with me. Pondering! https://aftermath.site/aftermath-freelance-pitch-guide/ #Journalism #AmWriting
