Why the heck are we still using Markdown?

I changed my mind. The best for my use case is actually #ZettelNotes which saves each note as a separate file (I picked markdown rather than org) and thus avoids a lot of sync conflict scenarios. I prefer the UI as well - it's more "appy". The trick to using it with #Syncthing is to create a second repository in a folder that Syncthing can access then hide the default repository. (The default is in private storage and cannot be synced except via cloud or SFTP.)

#whisperradio is now reachable via #Gopher, served by my #venusia, relayed by a Literate #Haskell script (Markdown):
* runghc is too slow, can't pin deps/GHC
* So I built a launcher that compiles/fetches cache
* Each literate script declares its own deps + resolverTry it:
nc gopher.someodd.zip 70 <<< /applets/icecast.lhs | mpv --no-cache -Messy writeup (cataloged with my #bartleby):
gopher://gopher.someodd.zip/1/library/regarding_someodd/opensource/gopher_applet_spec -
i no longer have a phlog. too webby.
gopher started like a library software. menus as shelves, card
catalog at the door. that's the ideawrote bartleby to use it that way. drop .bcard files next to your
stuff, it walks the directory and builds a catalog for gopher.no markdown, no templates, doesn't mess with your text

🥳 New Kitten¹ release!
Implemented workaround:
There is a bug in the CommonMark spec that results in preformatted code with empty lines nested in an HTML node not rendering correctly.²
In Kitten, this previously threw an error (see #294³ and also #318⁴).
Kitten now works around the issue in its own parser.
Full change log: https://codeberg.org/kitten/app/src/branch/main/CHANGELOG.md
Enjoy!

Today, I am announcing plans for the biggest change to Pandora's Tale Wiki since its founding: I am going to port the wiki away from MediaWiki and convert it to a git repository of text files. This conversion process may not be easy, but it is necessary. If we continue down the current path, I am going to burn out and will not be able to continue maintaining the wiki. I have described the reasons for the change in the article for Project: Texts About Pandora
https://pandorastale.wiki/wiki/Pandora%27s_Tale_Wiki:Texts_About_Pandora#Hosting_availability
(Yes, the name of the article is a pun on the pages "Texts from Pandora" and "Texts from Pandora 2".)
https://comicsbyxan.com/comic/texts-from-pandora/
https://comicsbyxan.com/comic/texts-from-pandora-2/
There are still some things I need to determine.
1) First and most significantly, I have to figure out how to convert a MediaWiki instance into a git repository. I've found several scripts which claim to do it, but they all seem to have significant drawbacks in addition to being unmaintained. I would greatly appreciate advice from computer creatures in this regard.
2) Then I have to decide on the text format: Plaintext, gemtext, or markdown? There are ups and downs to each of them, though I'm not as worried since I believe it might be possible to convert between them later.
3) Finally I have to decide on the hosting software and platform if I want anyone else to be able to read it. Gitlab, Forgejo, sourcehut, or something else?
Once I answer these questions, I am going to move Pandora's Tale Wiki to a git repository, and then I will ask Miraheze to shut down their copy of the wiki. I don't know how long this process will take, but I believe it's the only way I can continue the wiki.

Anyone else publishing Markdown -> Static Site Generator here?
Logseq -> Sourcehut is my setup and I'll be making it sing over the next month.
Curious about what y'all are working with :)

Kuse Web App Abused to Host Phishing Document
Bad actors exploited Kuse, a legitimate AI-based workplace application, to conduct a phishing campaign. Attackers leveraged a Vendor Email Compromise (VEC) to send malicious emails from a trusted vendor's compromised mailbox, establishing initial trust. The attack utilized Kuse's file-sharing features to host a fake blurred document with a Markdown file extension (.md) under the legitimate domain app[.]kuse[.]ai. Victims were presented with a fabricated document preview containing Spanish text prompting them to click a link. This redirected users to a fraudulent Microsoft login page designed to harvest credentials. The attack combined multiple social engineering techniques including domain trust exploitation, unusual file extensions to evade detection, and vendor relationship abuse to bypass security controls and user scrutiny.

@serigala_tropis yeah, but I still use #tuba on my desktop because of that problem only occasionally. And I feel (my opinion) tuba is the "best" #mastodon client on Linux desktop till now. They are especially supporting markdown formatting so I can post markdown formatted on #gotosocial.

If the document formats of the small-net / small-web communities (currently) are GemText, Markdown, a sub-set of HTML, and text, then —
What might a small-net / small-web app format look like?

At least as of the current date — the small-net / small-web communities have focused a lot on document formats
Which is great!
(Although I think people should try stuff that doesn't look like GemText & Markdown)
But, there hasn't been much effort to create app formats
I think a risk is, if we don't create app formats too, people will start trying to use document formats as app formats — just like what happened with HTML

The point of small-net / small-web isn’t about plain-looking documents — you should still be able to make them look good.
One of the goals is to separate document formats from app formats, so they aren't at odds — and through it try to eliminate the kinds of abuses seen on the Web today.
Some have chosen GemText or Markdown as that document format. Other use a subset of HTML.

HTML used to (mostly) be a format for reading and writing documents.
As time went on, it got changed to an application format.
These 2 use-cases (doc vs app) are at odds.
One of the motivations in the small-net / small-web space is to take HTML back to its document format roots. Although some have have chosen to use alternative document formats such as Gemini's GemText and Markdown.

Ever since setting up #Indiekit for adding #Micropub capabilities to my #Hugo blog, I have only used its web UI to post notes, photos, and likes (haven’t tried other clients yet).
The interface is not bad, but one thing that that bugs me is how links are handled. I am so used to directly pasting in URLs into selected text...

I'll also tag @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] @darnelltv since they celebrated #FediverseDay last year, 2024.In any case, my proposal is May 18th since it was on this day in 2008 when Evan, the father of the Fediverse, sent the first message.

To answer, May 18th, since it was on 2008-05-18 when the first fediverse message was sent.

During switching to an own organization CodiMD also switched from Docker Hub to quay.io as container registry. Major improvement: Security scanning for all images by default.
Disadvantage: You have to prepend quay.io to the image.
If you wonder where to find it: https://quay.io/repository/codimd/server
If you wonder about the change in general:

Nifty.
Looks like rumdl support for Markdown linting has just been added to Vim's ALE plugin.https://github.com/dense-analysis/ale/commit/c59c0d1a573a7b2fe491f78af4f2033bde454753

Beginning to really appreciate the #rumdl project in helping me lint my Markdown and get some consistency in the formatting of the gazillion notes I've created for myself.
Like #ruff and sphinx-lint, it's becoming a common part of my toolbox to keep my sloppiness in check and, perhaps, teach me some better formatting habits.
