Today I spotted this horde of black and orange intriguing insects devouring a milkweed plant.
I look them up and iNaturalist ids them as “Large Milkweed Bugs”.
Not to be confused with similar looking insects called “False Milkweed Bugs”.
And Wikipedia informs me that “False Milkweed Bugs” primarily feed on “false sunflower” plants, which I did not know were a thing, and so there you go: nature explained.

My friend Nancy and I swam with very BIG whale sharks in Holbox, Mexico yesterday! Quite simply one of the most transcendent experiences I’ve ever had.
It’s hard to get a sense of scale from the video here, but this whale shark is 25-30 feet long.
They are very gentle creatures. I was close enough to to touch the (admittedly huge) back fin.

SN Redacción | EFEMiami.- En medio de las inusuales bajas temperaturas en Florida, la NASA prevé realizar este sábado el ensayo en frío de la misión Artemis II, que incluye la carga completa de combustible, un paso crucial hacia la misión que llevará este año a cuatro astronautas nuevamente alrededor de la Luna por primera vez en más de 50 años.
Los equipos del Centro Espacial Kennedy, en Florida, continúan este jueves los preparativos del cohete Space Launch System (SLS) y la nave Orion, con los ingenieros avanzando -e incluso adelantados al cronograma-, informó la agencia espacial estadounidense.
El ensayo en frío podría culminar con un «lanzamiento» simulado tan pronto como el sábado, con una cuenta regresiva a las 21:00 EST (02:00 GMT del domingo).
El ensayo en frío (Wet Dress Rehearsal) es una prueba previa al lanzamiento real en el que se demuestra la capacidad de cargar más de 700.000 galones de propelentes criogénicos en el cohete, ejecutar una cuenta regresiva completa y practicar la descarga segura del combustible, todo ello sin tripulación a bordo.
Durante varios ensayos de cuenta regresiva se pondrá a prueba la capacidad del equipo de lanzamiento para detener, reanudar y reciclarla en distintos puntos de los últimos 10 minutos del conteo, conocidos como la cuenta terminal.
El ensayo contará con el lanzamiento simulado a las 21:00 EST (02:00 GMT), aunque podría extenderse hasta aproximadamente la 1:00 EST (06:00 GMT) si fuera necesario.
Tras el ensayo, la NASA evaluará los datos obtenidos y, si fuera necesario, podría desmontar y regresar el SLS y la nave Orion al Edificio de Ensamblaje de Vehículos para realizar trabajos adicionales antes del lanzamiento.
Este ensayo permitirá definir la fecha oficial del lanzamiento, cuya ventana de despegue se abre el próximo viernes 6 de febrero.
El frío y algunos fallos
El frío que se prevé para el fin de semana, y que azota a gran parte de Estados Unidos, tiene a los técnicos de la NASA ajustando medidas para garantizar que los sistemas de control ambiental mantengan en condiciones adecuadas tanto de la nave Orion como de los distintos elementos del cohete SLS.

EFE/EPA/Cristobal Herrera-UlashkevichPor otro lado, esta semana, durante una evaluación del sistema de evacuación de emergencia, las canastas utilizadas para trasladar a la tripulación y al personal desde la torre móvil en caso de emergencia se detuvieron antes de llegar al área final dentro del perímetro de la plataforma.
Posteriormente, el sistema de frenos fue ajustado para garantizar que las canastas desciendan por completo.
Además, los técnicos trabajan en muestras del sistema de agua potable de la nave Orion para asegurar que el suministro sea apto para consumo, luego de que análisis iniciales mostraran niveles de carbono orgánico total superiores a lo esperado.
Artemis II será la primera misión tripulada de este programa y llevará a los seres humanos nuevamente alrededor de la Luna por primera vez desde 1972.
La tripulación está integrada por los astronautas de la NASA Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover y Christina Koch, todos estadounidenses, con el canadiense Jeremy Hansen, de la Agencia Espacial Canadiense.
Los cuatro tripulantes realizarán una misión de aproximadamente 10 días alrededor de la Luna, con el objetivo de poner a prueba los sistemas y equipos de la nave y sentar las bases para la exploración lunar futura y futuras misiones tripuladas a Marte.
Mientras avanzan los preparativos en la plataforma, los cuatro astronautas permanecen en cuarentena en Houston (Texas) desde el pasado 23 de enero, como parte de los protocolos previos al histórico lanzamiento. –sn–

"The culprit was Cursor, an AI agent powered by Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4.6 model, which is one of the AI industry’s flagship models. As more industries embrace AI in an attempt to automate tasks and even replace workers, the chaos at PocketOS is a reminder of what could go wrong.
"Crane said customers of PocketOS’s car rental clients were left in a lurch when they arrived to pick up vehicles from businesses that no longer had access to software that managed reservations and vehicle assignments.

The advantage is that you don't have to start any other application like #JACK and/or a session manager, especially when you use plain #ALSA as the audio backend. The disadvantage then of course is that any other application won't be able to play or record audio anymore.
