My cat Susy LOVES her rechargable, motorized cat toys seen in the pic. But I've now had to repair both of them. Tonight was the smaller (and also newer) one at the top. Both have now had their gearmotors replaced with new ones I found on Ebay. The new motors appear identical, but are MUCH quieter than the originals, which is nice since they can turn on in the middle of the night.

The staff doesn't need much in the way of smarts but the lights do need to pulse. For this purpose I've snagged an Adafruit Prop-Maker Feather. The proof will be in the pudding but the specs look fantastic on this thing. I'm looking forward to getting some code on it and putting it to work. The #ChristmasLight project continues!
I ended up ordering a DRV8871 H-Bridge breakout board from Adafruit, and hooked it up to an #ESP32 running @esphome, which seems to be working! I need to figure out how I want it to show up in Home Assistant, since I've currently just got it appearing as two separate lights, which isn't ideal.
Assuming this works well, I'll try to make a custom PCB for next year!

I decided to swap it with a Bluetooth module. But first, I cut a perfboard to fit into the free space next to the motor shield. Soldered the pins and a pin header for the module, including resistors for the voltage divider.

New long term project...
I got this talking #DrWho 50th anniversary UK #Dalek #model quite a few years ago, and thought I could enhance it a bit.
I opened it and already bought some motors. First goal is to make it move on its own.
For now, I'll use the #ArduinoMega2560 #microcontroller that I got for my birthday, and assembled an #Adafruit motor shield with two motors. I hope to make the head turn, too, but will have to find out how to open it further.

The itch being scratched with this project was for kids who regularly want to swim at a family members house, but instead of bugging them with constant phone calls about whether the water is warm enough to swim in, they can monitor it remotely with the display on their own fridge.
The source code has not been published, and there was no mention of that, but I thought firstly this is an interesting idea, and secondly that Adafruit MagTag looks really useful for many other stats you want to monitor at a glance on your fridge door.

What I did during holiday: MacroPadSynthPlug! I really like the @adafruit MacroPad RP2040. It could be a really fun stand-alone musical instrument, but it has no Audio Out. Except now it does! MacroPadSynthPlug is a small board that gives you Audio Out & TRS-A MIDI In. Here's a demo of a simple drum machine in #CircuitPython. No other synths, just #MacroPad #RP2040! Inordinately pleased with myself for this 30 minutes of CAD work to make a little snap-fit case for an @adafruit "half-size" perma-proto PCBs. I often need these little "trays" to protect the undersides of PCBs. It does what I need and quick to print.

Today I fought with software for the #PyPortal. (The pyportal is the brains behind the reflow oven that I’m in the middle of making)
The #EZMakeOven page says use the latest version of circuit python. When I wiped the board and installed the latest 8.x, then installed the EZ Make oven software package, it was missing some libraries that it needed.
I eventually found an #adafruit circuit python GitHub repo, and installed that. Now, it finally works… er, well it doesn’t
