So on Friday, the FCC quietly extended the foreign router firmware deadline to 2029. Why you may ask? Well the said that enforcing it would create cybersecurity risks.
I mean imagine that, unpatched hardware might be an issue....who knew? 🤷♂️
The new deadline lands 20 days before the next inauguration. Oh and I believe TikTok says hi.

GamersNexus on the Shitstain administration's router ban and the new graft machine; they think one of the endgames (eta: in addition to the obvious ones) is to make end users permanently have to rent routers from ISPs:

What You Need to Know About the Foreign-Made #Router Ban in the US
The #FCC banned the sale of new consumer-grade Wi-Fi #routers and mobile hot spots manufactured outside the US. Here’s what it means for you.

Three companies approved under the FCC router ban. One makes sense. One is already in the government's server cabinets. One is Amazon — and you don't tell Amazon no when they run your classified workloads. Also I pulled the SEC filing. Funny story.

#FCC: #Router #ban includes portable #hotspots , but not #phones with #hotspot features
This means that companies making consumer hotspots need an exemption from the government to import and sell any future hotspots that haven't previously been approved by the FCC. As with #routers , devices previously approved for sale in the US can continue to be imported and sold without obtaining a special exemption.

The FCC router ban approval queue is starting to answer questions nobody was willing to ask out loud. Netgear got approved with no explanation. TP-Link's CEO wrote a million dollar check and told investigators about it as a credential. Total coincidence, I'm sure.

Ugh. My ISP just announced that they were "upgrading" and that would require me to get a new router. And the new router is Amazon's EERO and it requires that I download an app and create an Amazon account to set it up. And if I don't then they turn off the internet next week.
So, what are the alternatives for routers? I otherwise like my ISP and I'm guessing another one would have the same situation.
Their tech support was a little helpful and said "Some other alternatives for routers that are locally managed Asus, TP-Link, or Ubiquiti" but I'm not sure what the pros and cons of those are.
Am I right to be paranoid about getting Amazon involved in all my network traffic?

Netgear Gets Mysterious Exemption To Trump FCC ‘Router Ban,’ Refuses To Say How

As we thought, it was never about security!

I'm sure there's some money involved and probably going to be a bit more surveillance, too.

Banning New Foreign #Routers Mistargets Products to Fix Real Problem
#FCC cited “security gaps in foreign-made routers” leading to widespread #cyberattacks as justification for the ban, mentioning the high-profile attacks by #China's advanced persistent threat actors Volt, Flax, and #SaltTyphoon. In addition to being far too broad, it won’t even affect many vulnerable devices that are most active in these types of attacks: #IoT and connected #smarthome devices.

I had read good reviews about the #GL-iNet #routers so I purchased one of their products around 18 months ago. One of my main motivations was supporting, at some level, #OpenWrt and including tools like #AdGuardHome and #Wireguard.
But to be honest, it all has been a bit disappointing.
AdGuardHome never worked very well. Apart from being slow, the service would frequently freeze (e.g. whenever I updated the custom filter) and I had to manually restart it.
In addition, the system stack was quite messy and difficult to make sense of. For example, the #DNS service #Dnsmasq could be managed directly or via Openwrt, sometimes creating unintended problems.
Anyway, the router decided to implode after a firmware upgrade, which is quite underwhelming. I tried a few things like reflashing Uboot, factory reset, etc. before deciding to just toss it away and get another one, from a different brand.
