#Comcast Is Turning Millions of Its #Routers Into #MotionDetectors
Comcast is activating Wi-Fi motion sensing on millions of compatible #Xfinity gateways, allowing the routers to detect movement by measuring disruptions in signals between the gateway and connected devices. The free feature, part of #XfinityShield , can send activity alerts through the Xfinity app and offers Home, Away, and nighttime monitoring modes without requiring separate motion sensors. The Verge reports: Wi-Fi motion sensing is a technology that has been around for a while, but it's only recently that it's become accurate and reliable enough to catch on.

The US gov't had banned all foreign-made #routers earlier this year and weren't only focused on TP-Link.
Essentially all consumer routers in US households are either fully manufactured abroad or contain foreign-made parts.
The ban (still current) doesn't include routers already in US homes or for sale in #US. Companies can apply & have applied for exemptions 👀
The gov't cited "national security concerns" & wants routers to be made in #USA

Ha!
When you check your router and find it has silently ghosted just short of 200 old connections that have been renamed. not connected to in ages or just ceased to exist. Then the satisfaction of pressing delete all 🤷🤷. before setting up the guest wifi. -

How does #Fortinet put out network management routers that have quality of life features formerly exclusive to consumer and handrolled devices like SOHO #routers and what you could build with an old computer by reading the Linux HOWTO Project documents like #DHCP and #DNS, yet, beyond all possible comprehension, not dynamically update DNS and rDNS based on static assignments and the DHCP lease table?

🚨 Intel agencies warn that Russian state hackers (FSB Center 16) are targeting internet-facing routers worldwide, exploiting weak configs and SNMP to steal device configuration files and credentials. What You Need to Know About the Foreign-Made #Router Ban in the US
The #FCC banned the sale of new consumer-grade Wi-Fi #routers and mobile hot spots manufactured outside the US. Here’s what it means for you.

My impression is that the US Gov wants to make routers so pricey that normal people will rent one from their ISP.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qjesRkTFZqY
That rented one will be controlled by the ISP and the Gov, or you will be forced to pay a $1,200 router (or go to the black market) for what today costs $80 at best.
Imagine the pitch talk about leasing it for 4 years, just in time to become obsolete.

#FCC: #Router #ban includes portable #hotspots , but not #phones with #hotspot features
This means that companies making consumer hotspots need an exemption from the government to import and sell any future hotspots that haven't previously been approved by the FCC. As with #routers , devices previously approved for sale in the US can continue to be imported and sold without obtaining a special exemption.
