  1. Why would a computer (specifically a #G4 tower) power off when a DVD is put in the drive? I'm trying to figure out what's happening to the power supply in this situation that's causing the behaviour, because it's probably a pretty good clue as to what I did wrong when I rewired it that's also causing it to turn off after running for 15-20 min.

And it's not the drive itself. I swapped in another one just to eliminate that variable. I'm fairly certain it's something wrong with the way I rewired the ATX power supply to adapt it to Apple's weird non-standard pinout.

  2. No idea. Mounted the small rubber shroud for the rear fan from the Quicksilver, as opposed to the plastic shield that holds the fan in the Digital Audio, and I've mounted a 120mm fan on top pointing out, Intel cooler style. I don't honestly think heat is the issue, but I'd like to at least eliminate it as a variable (or hey, maybe it is the issue, and I can prevent losing another night to fighting with yet another cursed G4).

Starting to once again lose my taste for playing with old Macs (though there's always the possibility that it's a side effect of the modified ATX power supply).

  3. It is entirely possible that what is actually happening is it's going to sleep, and then failing to wake up (which I think is a side effect of the modded ATX power supply). I've now slid the sleep timer in the Energy Saver panel to Never, but I'm too dumb and impatient to wait and see if this solves it, and I currently have OS9.2 installing to the IDE drive. Wish me luck, lol.

  4. IT WORKED.

I did film the moment of truth, but all that happened was the same thing as before, the power button lit up for as long as I held it down with my finger. So I stopped filming, and then several seconds later, I heard what sounds like a fairly whiny unhealthy fan spin up, and I looked down and saw the obnoxiously RGB Corsair keyboard lit up.

I assumed nothing was happening, so didn't hold Cmd+Alt+O+F long enough to get into open firmware and boot via USB, so that's why I'm just getting the icon, I assume.

Actually now that I think of it, wouldn't it be a question mark icon if it were a matter of an HDD with no bootable OS? It might just be slowly booting off the USB as we speak cause I'm still seeing smiley Finder folder icon. ???

  5. Was about to test the newly modified ATX PSU in my Quicksilver G4... before I realized it was missing the CMOS battery (I forgot what Apple calls this, but it's the 1/2 AA battery that lives on the mobo... whatever). Why I bought a new battery for it, then realized the PSU was going to need replacing before it would work, and then removed the brand new battery I bought is a mystery to me. Maybe I thought I'd be holding onto it long enough to worry about the battery leaking a corroding the board? (iirc it was a lithium battery though, so honestly no idea what was going thru my head... or where I stored it in the meantime lmao)

  6. Okay I'm in a little over my head. If somebody who knows more about electriconics/power supplies could help clear up my confusion, it would be very much appreciated!

I'm following the atxg4.com guide to modify an ATX power supply to work in my PowerMac G4 Quicksilver 2002 (link: atxg4.com/quicksilver.html), but it is a little light on details, and some of it is just straight up ambiguous (at least to me lol). I can whip up a MIDI controller or an arcade stick with a microcontroller, but that's more programming than circuitry; my actual #EE knowledge is novice hobbyist at best.

Anyway, I *think* I got the "connect the +3.3v line to the Power OK" part right? I interpreted their words + the pinout diagram to mean that I twist them together and they go together into Pin 8? Again, a bit ambiguos; because pin 8 is grey on the ATX pinout, and orange on the Quicksilver pinout, but it sounds like I'm being told to put grey AND orange into pin 8? (See below photo for current status)

  10. I'm about to attempt something I've been meaning to do for a long time, but I've just been waiting for the right moment (one where I really wanna play Shinobi 3 on a Trinitron I found on the side of the road). I'm going to try to fashion a Genesis model 2 A/V cable that isn't complete dogshit (aka not just a set of random RCA cables cut, stripped, twisted, and poked into pins 4, 8 and 9, lol).

That or I'll just do it the dogshit way for now then pick up a new set of cables tomorrow.

  11. What I like about Sega Genesis (aside from everything) is that unlike things that say Nintendo on 'em, it's comparatively pretty cheap and cheerful to get physical games for.

This isn't an invitation for you and your little friends to suddenly get all excited about Sega. I already gave up on getting copies of all my favourite NES games years ago (you can emulate it on a toaster tho, so it's coo. I'll get a flash cart eventually I'm sure); don't ruin this one for me.

  12. Was very close to replacing my ailing #Trackman Marble+ with another of the same (but in better condition, aka with no missing bearings) from eBay, and then my executive dysfunction got the better of me and I ordered a brand new M575.

I’m mostly worried about ergonomics, but something tells me I’m really going to appreciate a modern high DPI sensor. This old Trackman’s 300dpi sensor requires me to have the cursor speed set one notch below the maximum.

Will report my findings, uh… probably tomorrow night, when I assume it will arrive, because I know you’re just dying to hear all about it. /s

And yes, I am very disappointed that the ball is now baby blue and now Logitech red :/

  13. So it turns out my intermittent audio issues on my #pocof1 running #postmarketos respond to percussive maintenance. My new theory is that the bulging battery pack is pressing on the speaker and making it buzz against its housing. I imagine I'd probably have better luck keeping the device outside the case, but the case is currently the most reliable source of power that isn't a direct connection to an outlet, so I'll just have to give it a gentle tap every once in a while lmao

  14. DIY'd a ghetto fix for the horrendous pads on the #MPC500: black electrical tape. Took about 4 to 4½ inches of it and folded it over itself 5 times (sticky side in) to make a littlw black rectangle, and popped one of those under each pad.

Night and day. The 5 layers was a guess, but it was a good one. They feel surprisingly like the pads on a classic MPC. Super responsive, and the velocity sensitivity feels far more natural.

The outer edges and corners of the pads still sorta "squish" like they did before, but I wouldn't notice it if I wasn't looking for it.

Coming from previously owning an #MPC2000, I honestly don't know how Akai let the 500 and 1000 out the door with these pads. It's actually embarrassing, and I can only hope the more recent ones have moved on from this squishy hollow "button" action.

I was ready to sell this thing within 24 hours of getting it, but this turned out so surpisingly well, I think this will be the beginning of a beautiful friendship...

  15. I did another thing... surprising absolutely no one at all.

The problem with trying to pacify myself with a cheap #SP202 in hopes that it would tide me over and prevent a more expensive impulse buy, is that it only made it worse.

We all know where this ends... but I'll try and make this far cheaper toy last for a while before the inevitable purchase of a fully loaded #2000XL

  16. 3D printers are a great way to keep yourself busy when you don't feel like doing real work. As cool as DIY clicky probes like the Klackender look, I decided to just pick up a CR Touch and make it easy for myself, so I don't give myself yet another project to work on while I'm procrastinating.

  17. Does anybody know of a modern browser that will run in a #libertine container on #UbuntuTouch? Ideally Firefox or a Firefox-derivative (Chromium if I have to, but Chrome is a no-go). I installed Firefox but it just gives me a black screen and an "X11 support" icon in the app menu.

  18. It's kinda wild how relevant Ted Nelson's Computer Lib/Dream Machines still feels. I read a passage to my s/o and she replied "yeah people need to get off the internet," not knowing I was reading words written in 1974.

"Somehow the idea is abroad that computer activities are uncreative, as compared, say, with rotating clay against your fingers until it becomes a pot. This is categorically false. Computers involve imagination and creation at the highest level. Computers are an involvement you can really get into, regardless of your trip or your karma. They are toys, they are lools, they are glorious abstractions.

So it you like mental creation, toy trains, or abstractions, computers are for you. If you are interested in democracy and its future, you'd better understand computers. And It you are concerned about power and the way it is being used, and aren't we all right now, the same thing goes."

(Not the aforemention passage; just another one I liked)

  19. Just started watching Somebody Somewhere today after seeing a random clip on YouTube Shorts. Never seen or heard anything about it until this point, but I'm very glad that clip came up on my feed, because I'm 3 episoes in and madly in love with this show.

It's beautiful, sad, sweet, adorable, and just... perfect. Watch it. Idk you but I like to think you'll enjoy it.

  21. Might be picking up an Ultranova tomorrow! Not really my style at first glance, interface wise, but ployphony and one-knob-per-function interfaces are not very common in my price range (not high, lol).

What it does have going for it is a full size midi DIN input, and I made sure a MIDI implementation chart was available, so there's nothing stopping me from building a custom controller that will give me more immediate control in the future, should I desire it.

And to think I almost considered selling my Electribe... now I'm going to have to reconsider the layout of my office instead 😬

  22. Anybody here watch Dead Mail? Wasn't expecting to get pulled into a movie during one of my s/o's horror movie marathons (wouldn't exactly call this a horror movie, but that's what she thought she was getting into lol) due to vintage synthesizer content, but that's what happened, and it ended up being really good.

If you're into synthesizers, while that's more of the set & setting than what the movie's about, I can say that you may very well appreciate the score. The use of wonky, off-kilter synthesizer during moments of tension or foreboding is great on its own, but even moreso combined with the subject matter. There's also some classical music, which I can't pretend to be super knowledgable about, but for the most part it's pretty standard stuff most people have definitely heard at some point.

It's a worthwhile watch that doesn't cheapen itself by leaning too heavily on tropes. Everyone involved (me, my s/o, and our mutual bff) left equally impressed.

Oh and there's also a little something something for the postal service nerds (like the USPS, not the music duo); it really is a wild story, tbh.

  23. I've learned to take the word "forever" as a suggestion rather than a promise when it comes to software licenses, and obviously I can't tell the future; I just had a really bad feeling when I found out that Canva purchased Serif and as a result, Serif Affinity. But with all that said... if this new Affinity is built on the same bones as the old Affinity, and it is indeed free for "forever", this is quite a bold move. My apologies to everyone involved for my immediate skepticism; I literally just found out about this like 5 minutes ago, but hey... companies don't acquire other companies for warm feelings.

Obviously the business move here is to leverage the near universal disdain for Adobe, and the appetite for a truly viable alternative (that doesn't run in the fucking browser) to Adobe's suite of apps (that they've spent the past decade making progressively worse than they've ever been; I actually hate working in Photoshop these days, which 14 year old me could never have imagined), to convince those in the position to choose (freelancers for example) to make the switch, some of whom will likely pay for cloud features (and AI, because of course). And I'm sure they're also hoping to capture some budding young designers who aren't holding onto years/decades of Adobe muscle memory, which could be a big deal in the future if the response to this new Affinity (again, I really do hope it's got the bones of Affinity 2, as opposed to Canva or Figma (blech), because Serif had something really great on their hands) is anywhere near what they're hoping it is. I only wish they had any interest in a Linux release at any point in time, but hey, baby steps lol.

Any designers have any feelings? I haven't really taken a deep dive yet, but I'm definitely going to download a copy on a Win10 install to see what's what.
