  16. LLANELLI: Forget the Scarlets — Llanelli has just been crowned the home of Wales’ second best Nando’s

Llanelli has long had reason to hold its head high — the Scarlets, the mural, the seaside. But now there’s a new entry on the town’s list of achievements: the second best Nando’s in Wales.

That’s according to a new study by BingoWebsites.org.uk, which crunched Tripadvisor review data for every Nando’s in Wales and ranked them by the percentage of customers who rated their visit as “excellent”.

Llanelli’s branch came in at 42.7% — with 85 of its 199 Tripadvisor reviews awarded the top score. Reviewers were full of praise, with mentions of “amazing service”, “vibrant ambience” and a “spotless restaurant”. Not bad for a peri-peri chicken chain on a retail park.

Only Newport got close — the Friars Walk branch topped the table with a 50% excellent rate from 112 reviews. After that, Llanelli is comfortably clear of the rest of the pack.

Swansea has two branches in the rankings, and neither can quite match their Carmarthenshire neighbours. The Morfa Retail Park branch came sixth with 38.1% — though that figure is based on just 21 reviews, making it one of the smallest samples in the table, so perhaps a pinch of peri-peri salt is needed there.

The City Gates branch tells a different story — with a much more substantial 250 reviews, it came ninth with 30%. A larger sample, but a noticeably lower satisfaction rate.

That makes Llanelli more than 12 percentage points clear of Swansea’s better-reviewed branch. A gap even the most diplomatic rugby fan would struggle to ignore.

Further down the table, Cardiff’s three branches — Mermaid Quay, Old Brewery Quarter and St David’s — all sit in the lower half, clustered around the 27-30% range. Bridgend and Merthyr Tydfil brought up the rear, with Merthyr finishing bottom of all 14 Welsh branches with just 23.9% of its reviews rated excellent.

The study was carried out by analysing Tripadvisor reviews for all Nando’s locations listed on the chain’s website. Branches with no Tripadvisor page or zero reviews were excluded — which accounted for Cardiff Capital Retail Park.

Matt White from BingoWebsites.org.uk, who commissioned the research, said the 26-point gap between Newport and Merthyr showed how difficult it can be for national chains to deliver a consistent experience across every branch. “The results suggest that customer experience at Nando’s can vary significantly across Wales,” he said.

For what it’s worth, Waterloo in London topped the UK-wide rankings with a 94.3% excellent rate from 53 reviews. Nobody in Wales is troubling that particular leaderboard yet — but Llanelli, at least, is flying the flag.

And the chain itself clearly hasn’t given up on south Wales. Plans have been lodged to open a new Nando’s at Parc Fforestfach Retail Park in Swansea, taking over the current Card Factory unit and potentially creating 40 jobs — which would give Swansea a third branch and push the city further up any future rankings.

Of course, the ranking comes at a time when eating out is getting harder for everyone — restaurants and customers alike. Llanelli has felt that pressure as much as anywhere.

The Tinhouse taproom on Murray Street closed earlier this year after the owners cited mounting hospitality costs. Ali Raj and the Bryngwyn closed on the same day in a blow that left customers heartbroken. And the Sandpiper faced an outpouring of community anger when Whitbread announced it was among those earmarked for closure.

So while Llanelli’s Nando’s clearly has plenty of fans — the data says so — the wider message is simple enough. Use it or lose it.

  17. Quote of the day, 30 March: St. Thérèse

“Look at Jesus in His Face … There you will see how He loves us.”

Thérèse is among that great crowd of witnesses—not eyewitnesses, but believers—who look upon Jesus as He dies on the Cross. She deeply understands that only Love can make sense of this event.

In a letter to her sister Céline on 4 April 1889 (LT 87), Thérèse writes:

“Your letter gave great sadness to my soul! … Poor little Papa! … No, the thoughts of Jesus are not our thoughts, and His ways are not our ways … He is offering us a chalice as bitter as our feeble nature can bear! … Let us not withdraw our lips from this chalice prepared by the hand of Jesus … Let us see life as it really is … […] To suffer in peace it is enough to will all that Jesus wills … To be the spouse of Jesus we must resemble Jesus, and Jesus is all bloody, He is crowned with thorns! … […] The canticle of suffering united to His sufferings is what delights His Heart the most! … Jesus is on fire with love for us … Look at His adorable Face! … Look at His eyes lifeless and lowered! … Look at His wounds … Look at Jesus in His Face … There you will see how He loves us.

To better understand certain expressions in this letter, it is important to know that on that day, Thursday, 4 April, the liturgy celebrated the First Vespers of the Feast of the Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ, which at the time was observed on the Friday of the fourth week of Lent.

Thérèse experienced this liturgy in Carmel, where she had been for nearly a year. Her father, Louis Martin—the Poor little Papa—had been unwell for months, showing alarming signs of decline. It had begun with his disappearance on 23 June 1888, followed by a relapse on 12 August. From that point on, his condition only worsened. On 12 February 1889, he suffered another episode, this time with hallucinations, and was admitted to the Bon Sauveur Hospital in Caen, where he would remain for three years.

For all the Martin sisters, the shock was devastating. Thérèse was deeply affected but did not give way to depression. She faced the trial with astonishing courage, drawing strength and light from her faith.

This letter, like many others, bears witness to this. For several years, her correspondence frequently returned to the themes of suffering and the cross. The devotion to the Holy Face, which was deeply present both in her family and in the Lisieux Carmel, was something she lived fully; the face of the Crucified was ever present in her life.

  18. SWANSEA: Ospreys lifeline as council seals historic St Helen’s deal

Swansea Council has struck a landmark deal with the Ospreys in a move being hailed as a potential lifeline for professional rugby in west Wales.

The agreement will see millions invested into the historic St Helen’s ground, transforming it into a dual-use home for both elite rugby and community sport.

Council leaders say the plan could reshape the future of the game in Swansea — at a time when fears over the Ospreys’ survival have dominated headlines.

Swansea Council leader Rob Stewart speaks to media at St Helen’s after sealing the deal with the Ospreys
    (Image: Swansea Council)

The partnership, approved by the council’s Cabinet, is being described as the first of its kind in the UK, bringing a local authority and a professional team together in a joint long-term investment.

Under the proposals, the council will fund improvements aimed at community use, including a new pitch and upgraded floodlights.

Meanwhile, the Ospreys will invest in facilities designed to attract crowds back to the sport, including a new stand, fan zone and broadcast infrastructure.

    (Image: Swansea Council)

It follows months of uncertainty over the future of the region, with the Ospreys at the centre of a bitter national row over plans to cut a Welsh team — a crisis we’ve been tracking closely in our ongoing coverage of the WRU civil war.

At the height of the turmoil, Swansea Council launched legal action and even sought to block controversial plans that could have seen the Ospreys effectively wiped out, as reported when the authority went to the High Court in a dramatic bid to stop the deal.

Now, council leader Rob Stewart says this new agreement is about securing the region’s future — and restoring confidence in the game.

He said: “Welsh rugby cannot afford to lose the Ospreys. That’s why we have stepped up and secured this agreement.”

He added: “This is a blueprint for how rugby can thrive in our region and across Wales.”

Council leader Rob Stewart with Ospreys players and officials at St Helen’s following the announcement of the new Swansea rugby model

Cllr Stewart also stressed the wider benefits for the city, saying the Ospreys are “a massive part of our culture” and bring millions into the local economy every year.

He said: “By investing in St Helen’s, we’re creating a fantastic facility for the community — opening the doors to schools, local clubs and young players taking their first steps in the game.”

The deal will also see Welsh rugby legend Alun Wyn Jones take on a key role in overseeing the new model, joining a Swansea Rugby Community Board.

Cllr Stewart said his involvement would be vital, adding: “Having such a rugby icon involved will be invaluable in ensuring we get the right pathway for our children.”

A state-of-the-art 4G pitch is set to be installed at St Helen’s, allowing the Ospreys to play matches there as early as next season.

But the venue won’t just be for elite sport — schools, local clubs and community groups will have regular access throughout the week.

Key figures gather at St Helen’s as Swansea Council and the Ospreys agree a landmark partnership
    (Image: Swansea Council)

Cllr Stewart said: “Working in partnership, we will deliver a community programme that inspires young people and creates a clear pathway from school and local club rugby through to the Ospreys.”

Council bosses say the aim is to reconnect the professional and grassroots game, boosting participation among young people while improving health and wellbeing across the area.

The Ospreys are also expected to expand their community programme significantly, with more school sessions, coaching opportunities and open training events.

For Swansea fans, the move signals a dramatic shift after months of crisis, protests and political pressure over the future of the region.

The hope now is that St Helen’s can become a symbol of renewal — not just for the Ospreys, but for rugby across Swansea Bay.

  22. 30 October: Blessed Maria Teresa of St. Joseph Tauscher

    October 30
BLESSED MARIA TERESA OF ST. JOSEPH TAUSCHER
    Virgin

    Optional Memorial

Anna Maria Tauscher was born in 1855 in Sandow, in the Brandenburg region (now part of Poland), to devoutly Lutheran parents. She was raised in that faith, but in 1888, she joined the Catholic Church. For this reason, she was expelled from both her home and her position. She found refuge in a religious institute and later with a family. Her journey of faith continued, and after reading the Life of St. Teresa of Jesus, she decided to dedicate herself to Carmel. However, through her, the Lord wanted to establish a new institute associated with the Teresian Carmel, and so, in 1891 in Berlin, the Congregation of the “Carmelite Sisters of the Divine Heart of Jesus” was founded. She devoted her life to caring for needy children and passed away in 1938 in Sittard, the Netherlands. She was beatified in 2006 during the pontificate of Benedict XVI.

A thirst to win souls for the Divine Heart

During the night of January 21, 1890, I seemed to see a very touching picture in my sleep. It was a living, life-size crucifix. From the hands to the feet, the body was framed with a wreath of thorns. A wreath of thorns in the shape of a heart was impressed into the left side of the heart. There was no crown of thorns on the head. The arms were not lowered; they were stretched out, as a sign of life. This vision was a shocking and pitiful sight, as well as horrible and jolting. There are no words to describe it. While my eyes rested on it, my heart trembled with pain.

I understood this picture to mean that the Divine Savior is the head in heaven, without pain or thorns. The Body is His holy Church, not only affixed to the cross by earthly powers but also wounded by lukewarm, lapsed Catholics, indicated by the thorns framing the body. The thorns impressed upon the heart are those consecrated to God, who have become the tepid and disloyal priests and members of religious Orders.

That morning I arose quite early and hurried to the church. My heart was profoundly moved by pain and compassion; no, it was wounded. It was clear that God was asking of me prayer and atonement! I was to pray for the conversion of sinners and to move the mercy of God for the freedom of Holy Church.

From that morning on my heart was filled with a new hunger and thirst, not only for God’s pleasure or for perfection, but with a burning hunger and thirst to win souls for the Divine Heart. That crucifix is stamped on my memory, and it not only keeps my zeal for the salvation of souls alive, it increases its fire and creates in me the desire to arrive soon at the throne of God, where my longing for souls may be satisfied.

    Responsory

R./ Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, * and I complete that which is lacking in the sufferings of Christ in my own flesh for the sake of His body, that is the Church.
V./ I appraised the cross always as the greatest sign of divine love, * and I complete that which is lacking in the sufferings of Christ in my own flesh for the sake of His body, that is the Church.

    Prayer

    Almighty and merciful God,
    you imbued Blessed Maria Teresa
with outstanding zeal for serving your people
    through persevering prayer and work;
    grant that through her intercession,
we may work with the same love even amid hardships,
and so dedicate ourselves to building up your Church.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
    God forever and ever. Amen.

    September 1
    SAINT TERESA MARGARET
OF THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS REDI
    Virgin

    Memorial
In the houses in Italy: Feast

Teresa Margaret belonged to the noble family of Redi, and was born in the Tuscan city of Arezzo in 1747. She entered the Discalced Carmelite monastery at Florence on September 1, 1764. She was granted a special grace of contemplative insight based on Saint John’s phrase God is love, through which she felt called to a hidden life of love and self-sacrifice. She progressed rapidly, fulfilling her vocation through heroic charity toward others. She died in Florence in 1770, aged twenty-three.

Come, happy Saint, and teach us all
    The boundless love of Christ,
His gifts to you, that for the height
    Of sanctity sufficed.

    You made Teresa’s teaching yours,
    Together with her name,
    Determined to become with her
    A spirit of pure flame.

Drawn by your Spouse, you lived with Him
    A hidden life apart.

(Decr. “Super tuto” AAS 26 [1934], pp 105-06)

The love of Christ impels us

Brief as it was, Teresa Margaret’s whole life may be regarded as one continual raising up of her guiltless soul to God.

In its innocence her soul turned spontaneously to God, and seemed able to find rest in him alone. In her, utter purity was joined to profound humility and she genuinely loved to be disregarded and despised. She did not simply bear humiliations, she rejoiced in them. Her purity of heart and her lowliness of spirit earned for her a high degree of charity, and this rapidly increased until her ardor became truly seraphic and she could hardly speak of God without her face becoming suffused with joy. Her love of God went hand in hand with a deep love for her neighbor and especially for sinners, on whose behalf she offered herself unreservedly to God as a victim. Her unassuming kindness and complete self-denial for the sake of her sisters in religion, especially the sick, were such that she was regarded as an angel of charity.

The fires of her love were fed principally by the Eucharist, and she looked forward with longing to her communions. She was also especially devoted to the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a devotion which did much to curb the advances of Jansenism at that time in Tuscany. She was utterly devoted to Our Lady, whom she regarded as the model and protectress of her own virginal purity. She was endowed to a high degree with the gift of contemplative prayer, and daily grew closer to God, as though reflecting the glories of the eternity she was fast approaching.

As her life neared its end this true daughter of the holy Mother Teresa and faithful disciple of Saint John of the Cross was called upon through a mystical martyrdom of the spirit, to resemble her crucified Spouse yet more closely. It was the very intensity of her love which caused this martyrdom; for the more fervent love becomes the more unrelentingly it spurs the soul on to further love, and since no love of ours can match God’s infinite lovableness, such a soul suffers exquisite torments from its insatiable thirst for greater love, and seems to itself to be wrapped in impenetrable darkness and to be totally lacking in love for God. In fact the greater love is, the less it seems to itself to be. It is the soul that is truly nailed to the cross with Christ by this supreme martyrdom of the heart that wins for itself and for others the choicest fruits of redemption.

Such souls by their silent apostolate of suffering, love and prayer, are foremost in the benefits they obtain for mankind and are the purest and most exalted in the whole Church.

    Responsory

℟. Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord. * You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength.
℣. The Lord your God is a consuming fire; a jealous God. * You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul and with all your strength.

    Morning Prayer

    Hymn

The life that flowered in Carmel’s shade,
    Yielding a fragrant-scented grace,
Is crowned in heaven, a bud of light
Washed in the radiance from God’s face.

    Margaret, you blaze with charity
    Among those weaving virgin choirs
Who, for reward, follow the Lamb
Singing the love his name inspires.

Help us to catch that same love’s fire
That, lit with the interior flame,
We find our life, our peace, our joy,
All things in Christ and in his name.

Help us deserve the Father’s gifts,
    Tasting eternity and heaven
On the unclouded source of joy
From whom alone all gifts are given.

Open our hearts to take the life
    Which his renewing Spirit pours,
Life that returns the Father’s love
With the same freedom it restores.

So even on earth we come to know
God’s Trinity by God’s own grace,
    Happy, like you, for evermore
To sing his glory and his praise.

With dance, and song, and melody.

We pray thee therefore to bestow
    Upon our senses here below
Thy grace, that so we may endure
From taint of all corruption pure.

To God the Father, God the Son,
And God the Spirit, Three in One,
Laud, honor, might, and glory be,
From age to age eternally. Amen.
