  2. #PlasticPatrol: the #CitizenScientists tackling #litter in #Australian #waterways

#Plastics make up the majority of litter across the country. In the absence of regulation, the public are taking matters into their own hands

by James Norman, Fri 30 Jan 2026

"Neil Blake weighs a paper bag of fake grass fragments he has collected from a stormwater gutter near #DarebinCreek in #Melbourne’s north.

"Over the past three years Blake has conducted 56 collections of synthetic turf in the waterway alongside the KP Hardiman Reserve hockey pitch.

" 'I noticed that a local hockey pitch was being replaced and the plastic surface was running off into the local environment,' he says. Strong northerly winds and #LeafBlowers had helped shed the turf fragments into the local #environment.

"In addition to impacts on #AquaticEcosystems, scientific analysis suggests #PlasticPollution is exacerbating #ClimateChange, #biodiversity loss and #OceanAcidification.

"Australians produce more than 3m tonnes of plastic waste each year, and according to Clean Up’s annual survey of parks, beaches, creeks and other public spaces, plastics make up more than 80% of litter across the country. A review by the New South Wales chief scientist found that one #SyntheticTurf field could transport between 10kg and 100kg of plastic fragments into the #stormwater system or local waterways.

"Blake has taken advantage of the electronic scales provided by the newly opened community science laboratory in the Port Phillip #EcoCentre in #StKilda, to quantify his samples to present to the local council and the Environment Protection Authority. The lab hosts facilities including microscopes, measuring equipment, safety gear and access to advice from trained scientists.

"It’s one example of citizen scientists tackling the growing problem of plastics in #waterways, including #beaches, #rivers and dive sites around the country."

  7. l managed to get 5 days camping on St Kilda in 2015. It's an impressive spot, logistically hard to get to because the sailings are often stopped by weather. This shot of Boraraigh and the smaller Stac Lee and Stac an Armin kind of sums up the isolation of place.
The main island, Hirta is where visitors normally spend their time. Everything is on a slope, the only flat bits are the floors of the old houses. #StKilda #Hirta #Boreray #Boraraigh #Scotland #Hebrides #Landscape #Seascape#Photography

  9. The most quintessential #AFL song?

    tism-this-is-serious-mum.bandc

🎶 My old man used to take me to the footy
    Now it's me takes him
    Been barracking for the Sainters
Season on end, season cold and grim
Every season we'd pretend that we were the great pretenders
And watch in the rain getting done again by the real contenders

Oh hear the cry, ring out to the Moorabbin sky

    Winmar to Lockett!

You've got my heart when you've got the leather 🎶

This the sort of light conditions I was hoping for when I went around with the big camera a day later (a picture I posted a couple of days back), but it wasn’t to be.

  14. A gorgeous creeper of some sort in a #StKilda alleyway… easy to miss given it’s secluded locale.

I revisited this one a couple of weekends ago as couldn’t stop at the time.

These are the best shots that highlight the various autumn colours, with the brown wispy branches behind the leaves, layered over this wooden fence.

It was raining at the time and that highlighted the vibrant leaves, so too the #bluestones on the alleyway floor.

This was a treat, for mine.

  15. Thanks to @Witchy_Minx for snapping and sending these through, from #StKilda #Australia.

She knows all too well my affinity with #butterflies. Like many of us, huh?!!

    This one is especially gorgeous.

  16. This is awesome.

There’s a similar mural set in #bentleigh (same artist for sure, not signed), but these in #stkilda #australia, just off Acland Street are something else.

The detail of the bat’s features are gorgeous.

  17. #Melbs pre-sunset tonight in #StKilda #Australia… it’s one of my fav go to’s…

#Trams, tram tracks, #palmtrees and the #sun. Also merry chatter in the street, revving motorists and doof doof music, from the neighbouring cafes.

But surprisingly enough it’s jacket weather… summer’s behind us but I suspect week eek out a couple of hot ones before the months out!

  18. The ever-excellent Seabird Group Newsletter contained a link to the work of Chris Mylne (1927 - 2018)

"a pioneering Scottish film maker, photographer and naturalist, who spent a great deal of time capturing, among many things, life as it was on St Kilda, Foula and other Scottish isles"

The website is an absolute joy of seabirds and Scottish islands

  19. #Nerium #oleander are bursting with colour and are in abundance throughout much of #melbourne #Australia at the present time.

Pinks (light and dark) and white seem to be the most dominant.

They’re really lovely. This was sprawling over a suburban fence in #StKilda - on a busy road. A feast for the eyes!

  20. A couple of nights ago just prior to sunset, nature treated #Melburnians to a show of #cloud formation that stretched over #PortPhillipBay!

These shots were taken along the #Esplinade #StKilda #melbourne.

The bay was also illuminated as the setting sun hit the water, to the west.

The clouds appeared to be a shimmering mix of silvers, greys and white.

Pic 4 shows a palm with what appears a radiating aura about it… a cool cloud formation 🤍🤍

    #nature never ceases to amaze.

  21. This mural is brand-spankin’ new!!

    It appears on the #EsplinadeHotel in #StKilda #melbourne and it’s of the #Aussie #homegrown iconic #musician #PaulKelly.

Paul Kelly is an Australian rock music singer-songwriter and guitarist. A legend whose been performing to crowds for over 30 years with huge hits including ‘Before too Long’, ‘To Her Door’ and ‘Dumb Things’ but to name a handful.

Definitely worthy of being displayed at the “#Espy”…one of the most iconic live-music venues of Melbourne!

  22. #ecoevo folks. My involvement in evolutionary ecology has been very theoretical, with one exception when helped field work on the St Kilda Soay Sheep project. Field work has one great advantage: much better views. Here is Village Bay, Hirta, St Kilda, Outer Hebrides, Scotland. While the picture was taken decades ago, the archipelago remains the same and the project continues. #StKilda #SoaySheepProject #OuterHebrides 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

  23. Some years ago I worked on data from the #StKilda #SoaySheepProject a long-running study of #EvolutionaryEcology in a large animal population. These particular animals are no longer there but their descendants are, and the research project continues. Are any current participants on #ecoevo.social or other federated servers here?
