Good morning Fedi friends. Pretty chilly old morning here in Melbourne at around 4c, the same as up home - but already it’s a beautiful sunny day & will reach a lovely 16c. I’ll only need my coat this morning.
A lot of people seemed to like the 3 pics I shared of the kinetic sculpture yesterday, thank you for the boosts. I’ve been looking online about the artist (Phil Rice), well worth having a look. He’s done some amazing work.
We were both extremely tired & footsore last night but slept well & feel raring to go again, just not quite so much. We have been deciding what to do today & had thought to take the same Frankston line & just get off at one of the beaches along the way. In the light of day though we’ve changed our minds & will be having a foray down to St Kilda for a lunch of fish & chips somewhere. St Kilda is where I lived 50yrs or so ago in a street behind Fitzroy St., so old haunts will be remembered. Looking forward to today.
Hope everyone enjoys their #Saturday, stay warm out there & have some fun 🌻. #Weather #AussieWinter #Sculpture #Walking again #StKilda #Beach -

#PlasticPatrol: the #CitizenScientists tackling #litter in #Australian #waterways
#Plastics make up the majority of litter across the country. In the absence of regulation, the public are taking matters into their own hands
by James Norman, Fri 30 Jan 2026
"Neil Blake weighs a paper bag of fake grass fragments he has collected from a stormwater gutter near #DarebinCreek in #Melbourne’s north.
"Over the past three years Blake has conducted 56 collections of synthetic turf in the waterway alongside the KP Hardiman Reserve hockey pitch.
" 'I noticed that a local hockey pitch was being replaced and the plastic surface was running off into the local environment,' he says. Strong northerly winds and #LeafBlowers had helped shed the turf fragments into the local #environment.
"In addition to impacts on #AquaticEcosystems, scientific analysis suggests #PlasticPollution is exacerbating #ClimateChange, #biodiversity loss and #OceanAcidification.
"Australians produce more than 3m tonnes of plastic waste each year, and according to Clean Up’s annual survey of parks, beaches, creeks and other public spaces, plastics make up more than 80% of litter across the country. A review by the New South Wales chief scientist found that one #SyntheticTurf field could transport between 10kg and 100kg of plastic fragments into the #stormwater system or local waterways.
"Blake has taken advantage of the electronic scales provided by the newly opened community science laboratory in the Port Phillip #EcoCentre in #StKilda, to quantify his samples to present to the local council and the Environment Protection Authority. The lab hosts facilities including microscopes, measuring equipment, safety gear and access to advice from trained scientists.
"It’s one example of citizen scientists tackling the growing problem of plastics in #waterways, including #beaches, #rivers and dive sites around the country."

Another St Kilda one., The Cleit At The End Of The World. It's a 300m cliff behind them. And another 10m one to scramble down to reach that spot. In the middle is Alan Hinkes, the first UK climber to do all 14,000m peaks, flanked by wor Sarah and her workmate who did the bird count that year. Alan was gobsmacked when they said they scrambled unroped down the steep grassy slopes and sat on little ledges on 100m+cliff edges to count birds. Yikes #StKilda

l managed to get 5 days camping on St Kilda in 2015. It's an impressive spot, logistically hard to get to because the sailings are often stopped by weather. This shot of Boraraigh and the smaller Stac Lee and Stac an Armin kind of sums up the isolation of place.
The main island, Hirta is where visitors normally spend their time. Everything is on a slope, the only flat bits are the floors of the old houses. #StKilda #Hirta #Boreray #Boraraigh #Scotland #Hebrides #Landscape #Seascape#Photography -

A small win, but it's taken at least 9 years of asking for change. New parking restrictions outside Donovan's. The on-road car park here has been a significant pinch point in the on-road lanes. A new DDA-compliant car park is over the road next to the Palais. Thanks Councillor Justin Halliday for championing this!

CW: Antisemitic attack, again…
Seriously people, what the hell is going on? Second attack this month.
No I don't approve of what is happening in Gaza either, and the actions of the Israeli government and their defence force in no way, justify these attacks anywhere. A decent number of the Jewish community here stood by the Palestinian community here, and said "not in my name".
Benjamin Netanyahu can pull his head in.
People have a right to freedom of religion in this country. Also a freedom to free themselves of religion in their lives. This is a personal choice, and no one, should be persecuted for the choice they make.

The most quintessential #AFL song?
https://tism-this-is-serious-mum.bandcamp.com/track/father-and-son
🎶 My old man used to take me to the footy
Now it's me takes him
Been barracking for the Sainters
Season on end, season cold and grim
Every season we'd pretend that we were the great pretenders
And watch in the rain getting done again by the real contendersOh hear the cry, ring out to the Moorabbin sky
Winmar to Lockett!
You've got my heart when you've got the leather 🎶

So what do people think of the draft streetscape plan for Carlisle St? The new plantings and pedestrian improvements look great, but they seem to have forgotten that people ride on this street. It's hard to tell from the plans but it looks like they may have put the door-zone lane into the tram tracks.

People had lived there for over 2000 years but, by the early 20th century, life had become too difficult to sustain. In 1930 the islanders petitioned for help to leave

One of the few remaining pieces of the so-called pop-up bike infrastructure trial* is some separated bike lane fragments along Marine Parade. There was a consultation on making those changes permanent in 2024, with results from the consultation due to be released in November 2024.
Consultation results STILL haven't been released. Port Phillip BUG members have been asking about this repeatedly: to DTP, to Active Transport Minister Gabrielle Williams, and to our local members Nina Taylor and James Newbury.
Finally, Minister Williams has replied to one of our queries.... to say that they are "working through the results".
We're not holding our breath!
#cycling #melbourne #StKilda*so-called as many of the changes such as curb outstands were about improving walkability, more than improving cycling. More about the pop-up trial here: https://www.ppbug.org/bug-blog/2024/7/23/new-data-pop-up-infra-was
