  6. New analysis refutes James Watson’s claim that he, not Rosalind Franklin, was first to recognize the significance of famed photograph 51.

The authors show that Rosalind had already recognized the helical structure in photograph 49, for which she made extensive notes. She calculated the length of each turn in the spiral and the number of bases “per turn of helix (if there is a helix).”

Photo 51 was just a more refined version of 49.

  9. Book Review: The White Coat Investor by James Dahle

    Book Summary

The White Coat Investor is James Dahle’s plain-English manual for a group that earns a lot of money and manages it badly: physicians. Published in 2014, the book runs a tight sixteen chapters and makes one central argument — doctors don’t have an income problem, they have a financial-education problem, and the people who step in to “help” usually have something to sell. Dahle’s answer is a complete framework: write a financial plan, keep living like a resident after training ends, insure your income properly, invest in low-cost index funds, and use the tax code instead of fighting it. It is short, direct, and free of jargon, the way a good attending explains something on rounds.

    Who is James Dahle?

James M. Dahle, who goes by Jim, is a practicing emergency medicine physician. He started The White Coat Investor as a blog in 2011 after a string of bad experiences with commission-driven financial salespeople, and it has since grown into the most widely read physician-focused personal finance site in the world. He is the author of several books — including the follow-up The White Coat Investor’s Financial Boot Camp — hosts two weekly podcasts, and runs an annual financial literacy conference for doctors. He writes like someone who learned this material the expensive way and would rather you didn’t.

Lessons From The White Coat Investor

Live like a resident. The most important years of a physician’s financial life are the first few after training, when income jumps several-fold overnight. Dahle’s flagship advice is to bank that raise instead of spending it — keep the resident lifestyle a little longer and the compounding does the rest. Lifestyle inflation is the silent killer of high incomes.

Insure your income before anything else. For a doctor, the greatest asset isn’t a portfolio, it’s the ability to earn. Dahle puts own-occupation disability insurance at the top of the shopping list, bought individually rather than relied on through an employer, plus term life insurance for anyone with dependents. He walks through policy terms so readers actually understand what they’re buying.

Learn how your advisor gets paid. A recurring theme of The White Coat Investor is that much of the financial advice aimed at doctors is salesmanship — whole life insurance and high-fee products pushed by people earning commissions. Dahle teaches readers to spot conflicts of interest, and to either hire a flat-fee fiduciary or manage things themselves.

Keep investing boring. The investing advice is deliberately unsexy: low-cost passive index funds, diversified across asset classes, contributions automated, no market timing, no chasing hot funds. Dahle’s point is that busy professionals don’t need a clever strategy, they need a durable one they will actually stick with.

Use the tax code. Maxing out 401(k)s, IRAs, and HSAs, understanding asset location, and planning around taxes — Dahle treats tax efficiency as a genuine source of return, not an afterthought. For high earners in high brackets, this chapter alone can pay for the book many times over.

Write the plan down. Underneath all the tactics is a behavioral message: emotional discipline and a written financial plan matter more than technical knowledge. Physicians are used to being experts, which makes them overconfident novices with money. The book’s checklists and chapter-end action items exist to fight that.

Buy The White Coat Investor on Amazon

    Criticisms of the Book

The White Coat Investor is deliberately a mile wide and an inch deep, and readers should know that going in. It will not teach you which specific funds to buy or how to evaluate an active manager — Dahle points you to further reading at the end of each chapter instead, which is honest but means advanced investors will outgrow it fast. The tax, insurance, and legal material is US-specific, so international readers will need to translate. And while the principles generalize, the book is written for high-income professionals; if you’re early in a modest-earning career, some chapters won’t apply to you yet. Finally, the index-fund orthodoxy is total — if you wanted a serious treatment of active management or alternatives, look elsewhere.

    Who is This Book For?

Medical students, residents, and fellows are the bullseye — the earlier this framework gets installed, the more it compounds. Practicing physicians and dentists who never got a financial education will find it immediately useful, as will other high-income professionals (lawyers, executives, tech workers) facing the same lifestyle-inflation trap. It’s also a good gift from a financially savvy parent to a kid starting residency. If you already run a tight Boglehead-style portfolio and have your insurance sorted, you’ll find it basic — but you’ll probably still nod along.

    Final Thoughts

The White Coat Investor is the rare personal finance book that knows exactly who it’s for and refuses to waste their time. It won’t make you a sophisticated investor, but that was never the job — the job is keeping high-earning professionals from sabotaging themselves, and on that score it’s excellent. Short, actionable, and written by someone who has seen every way doctors lose money. For its intended reader, it’s close to essential.

  19. There are many monsters that a glassen surface
    Restrains. And none more sinister
Than vision asleep in the eye’s tight translucence.
Rarely it seeks now to unloose
Its diamonds. Having divined how drab a prison
    The purest mortal tissue is,
Rarely it wakes. Unless, coaxed out by lusters
    Extraordinary, like the octopus
From the gloom of its tank half-swimming half-drifting
    Toward anything fair, a handkerchief
Or child’s face dreaming near the glass, the writher
    Advances in a godlike wreath
Of its own wrath. Chilled by such fragile reeling
    A hundred blows of a boot-heel
Shall not quell, the dreamer wakes and hungers.

Simon Andriesz reflected on the impact of his speaking out in his final post on X.

“The personal consequences of whistleblowing, and the retaliation I say followed, have been devastating for my family and me,” Andriesz wrote.

The British former banker said he planned to reveal more about his claims involving Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, Jeffrey Epstein and the financial firms Cantor Fitzgerald and BGC.

Andriesz, 57, was later reported to have died by suicide, according to reporting cited by The Banker.

His death was confirmed by Andy Agathangelou, founder of the Transparency Task Force, which had hosted whistleblowing events involving Andriesz, according to the publication on October 2.

Howard Lutnick was questioned about his past connections to Jeffrey Epstein during congressional scrutiny.MEGA

Per the BBC, Andriesz had previously drawn attention to emails from the Epstein files involving Lutnick and business dealings connected to Adfin, an advertising technology company.

[Editor’s note (Israel Palestine News): Jewish Virtual library reports: “As a Jewish businessman, Lutnick has maintained strong ties to the Jewish community and Israel. His support for Israeli causes and organizations, including United Hatzalah and Birthright Israel, has been a consistent feature of his philanthropic work. In October 2024, Lutnick accompanied Trump to the grave of the late spiritual leader of the Chabad-Lubavitch Hasidic movement, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, underscoring his commitment to Jewish heritage.”]

Andriesz found an email in which Epstein asked Lutnick about Adfin’s future, writing, “What do you think the prospects for Adfin are?”

Records reviewed by CBS News showed Lutnick and Epstein were involved in the company as recently as 2014, while their communications continued into 2018.

Per the New York Post, Lutnick previously said he cut ties with Epstein in 2005.

Howard Lutnick spoke about Jeffrey Epstein during testimony before the House Oversight Committee. MEGA

“I will never be in the room with that disgusting person ever again,” Lutnick said.

Per CBS News, the U.S. Commerce Secretary testified before the House Oversight Committee in May.

Lutnick visited Epstein’s private island, Little St. James, the private Caribbean island Epstein owned with his family in 2012, and faced scrutiny from lawmakers as pictures resurfaced and his account of their relationship was questioned.

Lutnick has not been charged with a crime or accused of participating in Epstein’s offenses.

  22. It doesn't have much to do with celebrity traitors; more about human behaviours but I'm tagging it anyway because... you know, filters.

I've endured the second episode of the show, still didn't enjoy it but some observations:

    1. Some of those celebrities has an image to keep so they treat it like a parlour game.

    2. Some just couldn't get out of their MOs

    3. Appreciate James Blunt's action plan - simple, actionable, moderately efficient. His military training has moulded him well.

4, Hannah Fry seems to assume people are logical, like some economists. Every action is calculated, every intent serves a bigger objective - what a tender world that would be.

    5. Actors are not necessary competent liars. They are more capable at performing a wider range of roles within a set time frame; whereas comedians can wear their stage persona for a long period of time.

    6. The show could be attractive to some viewers because they are showing who the traitors are to the other side of the screen, so every players seem stupider than them.

    7. The game plays heavily on human's behaviour of finding patterns when there is none.

    8. I might watch again if Victoria Coren, David Mitchell, Lee Mack, Ria Lina, or Reece Shearsmith participate.

    9. Hannah Fry is likely going to be out in the next two "games" or "tables"; I still don't know how the game works but it's unlikely for anyone to be logical enough and quick enough to process the information of 20 contestants. No matter she is out as the next pick she's likely going to be considered a threat.

Anyway, I don't think I'll enjoy another episode.

  23. Tribute to the Designer Legacy of Emilio Pucci

Though it was the year 1967 when Italian fashion designer Emilio Pucci was at his peak popularity, it was nine years later that he was most successful across several disciplines. Fifty years ago, in October 1976, Pucci reached two major milestones that highlighted his expansion beyond traditional high fashion into home crafts and automotive design. But before that fanfare, 1976 also saw Pucci rounding off his role as key designer for Braniff International Airways whose flight attendants looked futuristically dapper in bright, colourful, psychedelically inspired uniforms. Halston took over the role; Pucci was otherwise very busy.

On October 8, that year the designer aunched a Needlepoint Collection, of all things, working with wool garment manufacturer Amcraft to introduce a line of crewelwork and needlepoint and kits (that stuff sold lots in the ’70s. Pucci personally adapted eight of his famous geometric scarf patterns into 16-inch prepainted canvases for pillows, wall hangings, and handbags, sold exclusively at luxury retailers such as Saks Fifth Avenue.

Around this time, Ford launched its highly publicized 1977 Lincoln Continental Mark V Series, and Pucci was chosen as one of four legendary designers (alongside Cartier, Bill Blass, and Givenchy) to style a custom luxury edition of the vehicle, marking the start of a collaboration with Lincoln that lasted until 1983.

The 1977 Lincoln Mark V Emilio Pucci Edition. To be fair there’s not a lot of pattern swirling going on here, but I’m sure it drove like a dream.

Emilio Pucci is one of those designers where “psychedelic” is not just a convenient description — it was fundamental to why his work still looks so startling today. His clothes seem to move even when they are hanging on a rack.

That his clothes lent a kind of swirly, hippy vibe, it’s telling that Pucci was born in Naples on 20 November 1914, but was from an old Florentine aristocratic family, spending much of his life at the family’s Palazzo Pucci in Florence. He died in Florence on 29 November 1992, aged 78, and his House continues to create dazzling and awe-inspiring couture and ready-to-wear.

The Labirinto (or Labrynth) print ‘Cady’ dress that features in Pucci’s current collection, through L’Alba. Available at pucci.com.

    The Psychedelic Prince

If fashion had a hallucinogenic wing, Emilio Pucci would be one of its dealers.

Born into privilege but seemingly incapable of sitting still, Pucci was a skier, sportsman, pilot, politician, traveller, and eventually one of the most recognisable fashion designers of the 20th century. His education was almost comically eclectic: University of Milan, agriculture at the Uni of Georgia, an MA from Reed College in Oregon, and a political-science degree from the University of Florence. That’s a lot of certificates to fit in one’s back pocket then. He had also been part of the Italian Olympic skiing team at Lake Placid in 1932, although he did not compete.

Pucci’s fashion career effectively began with ski clothes. In 1947, a photograph of a woman wearing a streamlined ski outfit he had designed attracted the attention of Harper’s Bazaar. The designer’s approach was revolutionary because he wanted clothing that moved with the body rather than imprisoning it. Stretch fabrics, lightness, simplicity and an almost aerodynamic silhouette became important signatures. Then came the prints.

Pucci’s patterns are often described as kaleidoscopic, and that is probably the most accurate word. They swirl, spiral, fracture and ripple across the body, often combining colours that conventional fashion might have considered completely incompatible.

Think acid yellow, hot pink, turquoise, orange, lime, purple and black – sometimes all appearing on a single garment! The effect can resemble a cross between an op-art painting, a ’60s music festival poster, Mediterranean mosaic, or even something you might see after staring at a lava lamp for too long.

The remarkable thing is that Pucci’s psychedelic aesthetic predates the full explosion of psychedelic culture in the late 1960s. His prints were already developing in the 1950s, while the 1960s provided the perfect cultural environment for them to go completely bananas. Museums have specifically connected his all-over patterns with the visual language of Op Art and Psychedelic Art, and deservedly so.

Pucci’s inspiration was also very international. He drew from Mediterranean landscapes, Florentine history, Ancient Greek mosaics, flowers, architecture and his travels through places including Bali, India, Hong Kong, Africa, and the Americas. Aviation and the sensation of looking down upon the earth also influenced his visual vocabulary, particularly the part where patterns appear to change with perspective and alterations of light.

The man essentially turned the surface of the garment into a moving artwork. The print follows the body, bends around the waist, stretches across the hips and moves with the wearer. A Pucci dress therefore changes as the person wearing it moves, and this is why his designs can appear almost animated.

Emilio Pucci had the clever habit of featuring his signature on most of his garments.

From aristocracy to designer FOR the people

Marilyn Monroe in the green Pucci dress that would literally go with her to the grave, and, below, forever the fan.

By the 1960s, Pucci had become known as the ‘Prince of Prints’ (two decades on and he would heavily inspire another ‘Prince’), and his clientele included Marilyn Monroe, Jackie Kennedy, Grace Kelly, Sophia Loren and Elizabeth Taylor. His lightweight silk jersey dresses were particularly revolutionary because they could be rolled up, packed into a suitcase and worn with very little fuss and sometimes no ironing — a travel wardrobe of truly luxurious proportions when you don’t have to get the hotel ironing board out. Incidentally, Marilyn Monroe was famously buried in a Pucci dress. Even in funereal circumstances, his clothes spoke style, but I doubt Kim Kardashian would be able to get her hands on this one.

Pucci also understood branding concepts and execution unusually early. He put his name – not tacked on the inside back of a garment, which was and still is the norm – but on the actual clothing as well as household items. Dresses, scarves, jackets, gloves, perfume, luggage, eyewear, homewares and furniture, all these areas Pucci had a hand in brightening up, and if there was room on the thing to add his name, you bet he would.

Indeed, in the history of marketing, Pucci is an important early example of the designer-as-lifestyle-brand phenomenon that has now become quite common.

There is one wonderfully surreal chapter in Emilio’s career: NASA asked the all-round talent to design the emblem for Apollo 15. His abstract logo represented three stylised birds or forms flying towards the Moon — a rather perfect marriage of his fascination with movement, space and graphic abstraction. The birds symbolised the three crew members (David Scott, Alfred Worden, and James Irwin) and their unified mission into space.

    Pucci’s Death and Legacy

Pucci died in Florence on 29 November 1992, after falling ill and being taken to a private clinic. Contemporary reports described the cause as heart attack/respiratory failure. His legacy, however, has proved remarkably durable. Even his name is often dropped in fashion conversation when something “looks Pucci-esque” or indeed is “very Pucci”. No need to mention that other design house that rhymes with his name – Pucci’s designs run circles around the others when it comes to timelessness, even in all their vividness.

There was a period when Pucci’s exuberance seemed out of step with the more severe fashion of the 1970s and 1980s. But by the early 1990s, his swirling colours and unmistakable prints were experiencing another revival, and could be set for another one soon. His influence can be seen in generations of Italian designers, from Missoni to Etro to Roberto Cavalli, and in the continuing appetite for archival Pucci.

And perhaps the most important part of his legacy is that Pucci made joy into a serious design philosophy. He didn’t want clothes that merely looked expensive. He wanted clothes that suggested travel, sunshine, movement, maybe the Fibonacci sequence; bodies, holidays, confidence and possibility. That’s a pretty good reason to still adore his work.

    THE PUCCI LABEL TODAY

Camille Miceli is Pucci’s artistic director and has been since 2021 — and she is doing something very clever with the legacy brand. Rather than simply reproducing the old Pucci psychedelic prints, she is feeding contemporary subjects through the original Pucci visual machine.

Contemporary collections mixe house emblems with horses, stars, geometric forms, and abstract landscapes with iconic textile prints such as the classic Fiamme, Leocorno, Fune, and Baiadera lines. As for the archive itself, Miceli has been treating these less like a museum and more like a giant psychedelic toolbox.

There are both fitted and fluid silhouettes on display in exhibitions around the globe, and these appear in the most recent collections, too, including that garment that you could say summed up the late ’60s / early ’70s: the trumpet trouser. Think generous flares. Like, real generous and you’re kind of there.

Pucci’s 2026 Manuba print pants bring lighter connotations to the designer’s famous ‘trumpet trouser’.

If there ever was an edict to sum up the multi-disciplinary design ethos of Emilio Pucci, it was this: take a landscape, turn it into a print, put that print on a body, then send that body somewhere fabulous. On a final psychedelic note, the Pucci house recently revealed there are more than 500 colours in the Emilio Pucci archive. Eons before Instagram, the man understood that a garment could be an entire visual universe, and that the wearer could become its literal moving canvas. He didn’t really design clothes to be looked at; he designed them to be experienced. And that’s why three-decades-plus after his death, Pucci still looks wonderfully, almost chemically, alive.

Love Actually is coming to Swansea this Christmas, with a full orchestra playing the soundtrack live as the film runs on a huge screen.

The show, Love Actually Live in Concert, plays Swansea Building Society Arena on Sunday 6 December, for one night only.

It is the only Welsh date on a 14-stop UK tour that opens at Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall on 30 November and finishes at Portsmouth’s Guildhall on 22 December.

Outside Wales, the nearest stops are Bath’s Forum on 4 December and Birmingham’s Symphony Hall on 14 December.

Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman and Bill Nighy on the big screen

Hugh Grant, Emma Thompson, Colin Firth, Liam Neeson, Keira Knightley, Alan Rickman and Bill Nighy lead the cast.

Laura Linney, Martine McCutcheon, Rowan Atkinson and Martin Freeman also star.

Nighy is an ageing rock star chasing the Christmas number one, while Neeson plays a widower helping his stepson through his first crush.

Richard Curtis wrote and directed the 2003 film, a set of linked stories about love, friendship, family and heartbreak in London in the weeks before Christmas.

Craig Armstrong’s score, played live in time with the film

The whole film is shown in high definition while the orchestra plays Craig Armstrong’s score in sync with the action on screen, organisers say.

More than two decades on, the film is back on television every year and has become a Christmas tradition for millions, according to the promoters.

Our reviewer Jonathan Marshall will be at the arena on the night, and his verdict will follow.

Last month he reviewed Q The Music’s James Bond Concert Spectacular at the Grand, and called it “a wonderful night out”.

Before then, Harry Enfield brings his first solo tour to the arena on Monday 12 October.

The tour is promoted by JOY. Concerts, a Brighton promoter that has been putting on shows since 2008.

    Key Messages:

    - A stronger cold front crosses the waters Monday night into Tuesday with Small Craft Advisories possible.

1030mb high pressure is centered from ME to Atlantic Canada early this morning. Meanwhile, a stationary front lingers in vicinity of the SC and southern NC coast. The pressure gradient on the southern flank of the high has resulted in a 15-20kt E wind off the MD, DE, and NJ coasts, which as resulted in seas ranging from 3-4ft S to ~4ft N in the coastal waters and likely ~5ft in the offshore waters N of Parramore Island. Waves in the Ches. Bay are ~2ft. Weak low pressure develops along the stationary front today and pushes off the Outer Banks tonight. The wind will be light today, generally shifting from E/SE the first part of the day, to W/NW by later this aftn. A push of drier air arrives late tonight into Monday with a NNW wind increasing to 10-15kt over the Ches. Bay and ocean, and 8- 12kt elsewhere. Seas gradually subside tonight, and will primarily be 2-3ft by tonight and Monday. Waves in the Ches. Bay are expected to be 1-2ft today into tonight, and 2-3ft by Monday.

A stronger cold front is progged to cross the coast later Monday followed by a CAA surge Monday night into Tuesday. 04/00z models have continued to show a weaker trend with this post-frontal surge. Local wind probs for sustained 18kt are now 50% or less over the Ches. Bay Monday evening, and these values diminish late Monday night into Tuesday morning. Regardless, there will still likely be a period with a 15-20kt N/NNE wind for the Ches. Bay, lower James, and Currituck Sound given the cooler/drier air over warm water. Additionally, a N/NNE wind should increase to ~20kt over the southern coastal waters Monday night, with 4-5ft seas by later Monday night into early Tuesday. Wind/seas fall short of SCA criteria based on the 00z guidance. High pressure builds across the coast later Tuesday/Tuesday night and lingers through Thursday. A weaker cold front crosses the coast Thursday night, with high pressure returning Friday. Sub-SCA conditions are expected to prevail later Tuesday through the end of the week.

A Moderate Rip Risk continues for the northern beaches today and all beaches on Monday. A Moderate (or potentially high) Rip Risk is forecast for the southern beaches on Tuesday.
