SNAP reductions could threaten free school meals

Peer ministers provide counseling inside North Carolina prisons

A September 6 report from NC Health News, published by The Carolinian, explored a program that trains incarcerated people to provide peer counseling, spiritual guidance, grief support and mentorship.

More than 80 men have graduated from the North Carolina Field Minister Program, and over 60 are serving at 16 prisons. A cohort of women is also completing the program at the North Carolina Correctional Institution for Women.

Participants earn bachelor’s degrees in pastoral ministry and receive training designed to help them support people experiencing addiction, isolation, family separation and mental-health crises.

Elbert Cox’s Raleigh connection receives renewed attention

Carolinian staff writer Jordan Meadows profiled pioneering mathematician Elbert Frank Cox on September 6.

Cox joined Shaw University’s faculty in Raleigh in 1919 before pursuing graduate study at Cornell University. In 1925, he became the first Black person known to earn a doctorate in mathematics.

The story connects an international academic milestone to Raleigh’s HBCU legacy and the educators who created opportunities for Black scholars despite segregation and discrimination.

National pickleball championships bring visitors to Cary

NCCU professor raises questions after Raleigh hanging death

Triangle Tribune reporter Kylie Marsh examined the community response to the death of a Black man found hanging from a tree in Raleigh. Police classified the death as a suicide.

Christopher Edwards, an adjunct psychology professor at North Carolina Central University, questioned that conclusion and argued that the circumstances warranted close forensic scrutiny. The September 2 story placed the local case within broader concerns about several hanging deaths involving Black people across the South.

The professor’s statements are his analysis, while the official Raleigh Police Department determination remained suicide at the time of publication.

NCCU and Shaw earn early-season football victories

Shaw University also earned a 23-13 victory over Barton College. Trey Thorpe led the Bears with 114 rushing yards as Shaw scored 13 unanswered points in the fourth quarter.

Cary Tennis Classic Returns to Cary Tennis Park June 28 – July 5, 2026

Tennis fans across the Triangle are getting ready for one of North Carolina’s premier professional sporting events as the Cary Tennis Classic returns to Cary Tennis Park from June 28 through July 5, 2026. The annual tournament brings rising stars and international professional players to one of the nation’s top public tennis facilities for a week of world-class competition.

The Cary Tennis Classic has become a staple on the professional tennis calendar. Originally launched in 2015 as the Atlantic Tire Championships, the event has evolved into a combined men’s and women’s professional tournament featuring ATP Challenger and Women’s World Tennis Tour competition. The tournament was rebranded as the Cary Tennis Classic in 2024 and expanded to include a women’s professional event alongside the men’s competition.

What Makes the Cary Tennis Classic Special?

The tournament gives local fans a rare opportunity to watch future tennis stars compete up close before they become household names. Past competitors have included ATP standouts Ben Shelton, Frances Tiafoe, Tommy Paul, and Jack Sock, all of whom have gone on to achieve success on the sport’s biggest stages.

For 2026, the tournament will feature an ATP Challenger 75 men’s event and a Women’s World Tennis Tour 100 tournament, attracting players from around the globe who are competing for ranking points, prize money, and advancement in professional tennis.

The Soccer Tournament (TST) continued to showcase world-class competition on May 29 at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, North Carolina, as the Men’s Round of 32, Women’s Group Stage, and Mixed Division matches produced dramatic finishes, comeback victories, and standout individual performances.

From target score time winners to dominant shutouts, fans were treated to a full day of unforgettable soccer action.

Detroit City FC Dominates Mixed Division

Detroit City FC put the Mixed Division on notice with a commanding 6-0 victory over Solo FC. Six different players found the scoresheet, led by Brielle Heuglin, Jay Chapman, Emma Nicholson, Lilley Bosley, Lopez Jordy, and Celia Gaynor.

Later in the day, Detroit City FC remained unbeaten with a 2-0 victory over Sneaky FC behind goals from Lopez Jordy and Antoine Hoppenot.

All-Day Highlights

Bank of America customers can enjoy free admission at the Marbles Kids Museum in Raleigh as part of the Museums on Us program. In Raleigh, the Pope House Museum offers guided history walks through the Third Ward for $5–10, providing an African American Walking Tour experience. Celebrations continue at Ponysaurus Brewing Co. in Raleigh with Oktoberfest festivities. Additionally, Duke University Chapel in Durham hosts a Día de los Muertos Ofrenda, featuring a cultural altar.

Morning Fun

The Cars and Coffee Morrisville event is a classic car meet-up at the Imperial Center in Durham from 8am to 11am. The day offers a variety of events across different locations. At Blackwood Farm Park, the Picnic with Pride takes place from 12pm to 3pm, while the Triangle Oktoberfest is held at Booth Amphitheatre in Cary from 12pm to 8pm. Downtown Raleigh hosts the Raleigh Wide Open Music Festival from 12pm to 11pm, and Bottle Theory’s Oktoberfest occurs in Apex during the same hours.
