  1. Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

"If you’re older, it’s tempting to feel dismissive of the trend among gen Z (those born between the mid-90s and early 2010s) towards phone call phobia, but that is to miss the changing meaning of phone calls. They are now considered much more invasive, says Dr Zoetanya Sujon, programme director for communications and media at the London College of Communication. Young people, says Sujon, use phones in a different way from older people. Millennials and older people would have grown up with only a household landline, and a familiarity with phone boxes, and the oldest among us wouldn’t have even had this."

  3. When I was a kid, one thing that parents universally did was force us kids to go through basic social politeness rituals with strangers. For example, if I was walking with mom and she saw a co-worker, she’d introduce me, then give me full instructions: “okay, dear, say ‘Hello Mr. Chan’. Now shake his hand. No, the other hand. Good.” And then the stranger would ask the kind of insane questions you ask kids you don’t know, and mom would prompt me to answer. Then the adults could get to talking while we wandered off.

Nowadays I run into adults with kids all the time in my kid-friendly neighbourhood, but it has been decades since I’ve seen any parent instruct their kids this way. When I say hi to my neighbours I will always say hello to the kids as well to be polite, and the almost universal reaction is a deer-in-the-headlights look with a confused wary silence. (The teenagers are fine, they will grunt a greeting at me. I’m talking about the little ones.)

I’m curious how/when this parenting shift occurred. Were you taught social niceties explicitly when you were a kid? Are you coaching your kids?

  8. So, question for y'all: are we back to shaking hands? I was so relieved when, early in the pandemic, we stopped doing that, and I had hoped it would not come back, but then yesterday FOUR people wanted to shake my hand on meeting me, and the other week, a doctor I saw also wanted to shake my hand. Is the handshake back? And more importantly, how do you (politely) get out of it when a hand is offered?

  10. when I was a kid I remember there was this "Etiquette for Ladies" TV show that would come on after The Price is Right when I was at my nanny's (my mom's stepmom) house

my weird little autistic trans girl brain treated that like gospel

I tried so hard to be a perfect little lady

and I couldn't figure out why it didn't make my mom happy

    she's always very lady-like, I thought she'd like it

so I assumed I was just doing it wrong, or not good enough

I tried even harder, and eventually that "be lady-like" became one of the self-critical voices in my head

I still feel gross when I do something "unladylike" and it's weird

Do you ring your bicycle bell? When I retuned to cycling, the first thing I did with my new bike is what I did as a kid, I removed the spoke protector, reflector and the bell.

I totally agree with Rory Sutherland: "recording a five minute message is discourteous to the recipient".

And also Ramya's point: "For the person who's sending the voice note, it's super easy. They just have to press the button and then they can ramble on. But for the person who's receiving… they've got to just pay all their attention to this voice note."

“Conversation is a minefield until you learn the conventions, Jane dear.”
“I’ll never learn all the rules,” muttered Jane.
