Everything in life must end.
I often find myself thinking of this phrase throughout this year, as it's been one wild ride of lessons and endings.
As the growing season comes to a close as well, and we pick the last tomatoes off our plants, hoping they ripe on the counter since the cold weather is doing them no favors - I can't help but sigh at the bittersweetness of endings.
On one hand, theres so much more left to do and dreams to make into reality.
On the other hand, we learned a lot and feel better prepared for next year, exhausted and ready for the break of winter.
We cleared out most of our beds, a few plants still slowly producing, but most everything else has come to a quiet close.
In a way, it feels like I can breathe again.
Life can get hectic, and trying to keep up with all of the dreams you started months ago, when your tastes have now changed, is utterly exhausting.
Did I do enough?
Did I waste anything?
Why didn't I ever get to that?
The guilt and the shame can easily creep in.
Relax.
Look at all you reaped.
Look at all you grew.
Look at all you learned.
I try to remind myself that the only constant in life, is change. And all things must end.
And that exactly is how new adventures begin.
Yes, new adventures.
New knowledge.
And new life.
The world is full of spirals. Not cycles, but slightly skewed paths revisiting the same themes over and over, but changing each visit.
You will never revisit the same situation twice. There is always differences.
Rejoice in that fact.
Use it to your advantage.
And enjoy the next step with the knowledge you learned.
I am grateful for change, as bittersweet as it is.
I can only imagine where the next season may take us.

Note To The Closet Perfectionist: Give 37 Percent
I am a big baseball fan.
As a closet perfectionist working on being gentler with myself, an encouraging insight came to me while watching a recent baseball game.
30 percent or a .300 batting average is considered the mark of a premier player. In fact, Ty Cobb, one of the greatest baseball players ever, holds the record for the highest career batting average over his 24(!) seasons.
His stat? .366.
Pretty remarkable. It’s a baseball record that will probably never be broken.
But to put it another way, over Cobb’s lifetime he “only” hit the ball around 37 percent of the time. Which means he missed 63 percent!
In baseball, that is considered great.
So perhaps instead of subscribing to the mantra of giving “110 percent,” I should take a lesson from Cobb and baseball.
You see, while Cobb wasn’t much of a home run hitter, he is still #9 on the all-time list with 1944(!) RBIs (Runs Batted In).
So not only did Cobb hit the ball well, he brought a LOT of his teammates home to score as well.
In this crazy game of life, hopefully I can be half as good as Ty Cobb was in baseball.
Keep my eye on the ball.
Keep swinging even if I miss more than I hit.
Don’t get down on myself too much if I go down swinging.
Give it my 37 percent.

Broken sunflowers still bloom 🌻
In the springtime, Travis and I discovered volunteer sunflower sprouts growing in between the sidewalk.
I’m pretty sure the sunflower seeds were left behind in the wintertime by the birds and squirrels when I put up bird feeders.
So, we gently moved the sunflower sprouts to our garden bed.
Photo of one of the sunflower sprouts growing in between the sidewalk. 🌱We managed to “rescue” six of the eight sunflower sprouts we found in the sidewalk. All six of the sprouts recovered from transplant shock and grew strong and tall.
But as many gardeners know, sunflower stems can still be fragile, especially during storms or when pesky squirrels are rummaging through your garden. 😏🐿
A squirrel broke the stem of one of our sunflowers. 😭🌻Another broken sunflower stem. 😫 This time the squirrel was stealing some of my cherry tomatoes, which is planted next to a sunflower.The beautiful thing about sunflowers, though, is that they are resilient plants.
Despite nature’s challenges, sunflowers will try very hard to keep growing, even when broken. Sometimes they just need a little help.
This is something I have learned this gardening season.
She’s a fighter!I was able to save one broken sunflower plant by trimming down the stem and placing it in a vase of water.
The sunflower still bloomed, and the bees loved it!
Another sunflower plant with a broken stem (thanks squirrel! 🐿😏) Travis was able to make a stick-based cast for it.
And the other day, that sunflower bud still bloomed!
Little Zaya (5) admiring our new sunflower bloom. 🥰🌻It makes me happy that even though a couple of our sunflowers experienced hardships, we were still able to give the flowers a chance to complete their life cycle. 🌻😍
Despite being broken, the sunflowers served a great purpose by attracting the bees to our garden to pollinate our food plants (like our peppers 🫑 and tomatoes 🍅).
And perhaps there’s a lesson to be learned from broken sunflowers that keep blooming anyway. 😉🌻🙏🏽

Learning to Discern Criticism in Ministry
I once sat down for lunch with a congregant, only to be blindsided by the opening comment: “You preached the worst Easter message I’ve ever heard.”
During the pandemic, when our church was online, a congregant told me they sometimes turn the service off when they don’t like what I’m preaching.
In ministry, you must learn to discern the critique you’re given. You must be humble enough to listen, but also recognize that you can’t please everyone in our very opinionated world, where visitors leave Google reviews and online ratings of churches. Many of our criticisms do not come from the Holy Spirit (though some will make it seem so), but from our own pain, preferences, and hardness of heart. These kinds of critiques will eat us alive if we’re not careful.
Be humble enough to hear critique openly—even invite it, especially with people you trust—but don’t assume every single critique you’ve ever received is correct. And even if it is correct, it may not always be substantive. For example, I once put a Bible passage on the screen with the wrong verse reference, causing someone to come to me in tears. Did I not respect the Bible enough to proofread the slides? Was Scripture not sacred to me? The criticism was correct, but this was an over-the-top response to a copy-and-paste issue on the slides.
On top of all these external voices of critique, pastors also face internal ones.
Jim looked at me weirdly when I said that thing in my message last week, and now they’re not here today.
I tried to be faithful to what I thought I was supposed to preach, and now attendance is down.
I know that worship song stretched people a bit, but it was perfect for the message, and now that couple is probably never coming back.
Did that person leave the sanctuary to use the bathroom, or did I say something wrong?
Maybe I didn’t make that new person feel comfortable enough.
Maybe I did too much of this.
Maybe I did too little of that.
Pastors carry a heavy weight in their minds. We all know that a big part of what people look for in a church is whether or not they like the pastor. When people visit your church and don’t come back, it’s hard not to take it personally. When people who usually go to your church disappear for a month, you wonder what you did.
Some critiques are nothing more than preference. Some critiques are fair. Some critiques are very important, and you should make the necessary changes immediately. But use discernment as to what’s what.
Jesus faced criticism all the time. Try to learn to process it and deal with it like he did. There have been so many critiques I needed to hear that have made me a better person, a better preacher, and a better pastor. But there have also been some that have been so painful that I’ve needed inner healing to get them to stop constantly replaying in my mind. Bring all critiques before Jesus in prayer and humility, and he’ll help you discern through them and heal from the toxic ones.

A Word for Small Church Pastors
“You don’t have a competitive bone in your body, and you’ll labor in the same vineyard as others,” a stranger once told me, having sensed the Holy Spirit wanted them to pass along this word.
This is fairly true of me. I am happy to work alongside other churches, organizations, and city officials wherever we overlap in mission. Anything that is a win for the Kingdom of Heaven is a win for all of us.
But like many pastors, I struggle with church jealousy. I have a strange habit of torturing myself by opening YouTube on Sunday nights to watch live streams from large churches in my city. What does that pastor have that I don’t? I think to myself. What is that church doing that we’re not? If I do what they’re doing, will more people show up?
Comparison is something that all pastors have to face. There will always be a church somewhere doing something better than you or that has more people than you. You need to be faithful to what God is doing in your church—not to what he is doing in someone else’s. Surrender any jealousy that you have to Jesus as quickly as possible. It is not healthy for your soul or your ministry. If you are a true church, then you are a force to be reckoned with in the spiritual realm, regardless of size. Stand firm.
Once, during a chaotic deliverance session, the manifested demon kept reminding me of how small our church was. A strange thing happened in that moment. Rather than feel defeated by its statements, I recognized that the demon was really annoyed by our small church. Why did it care so much about ripping apart our church if it was so small and pointless? Why did it want me to feel like a failed pastor?
As I often say, figure out what a demon wants and do the opposite. If the demon wanted me out of ministry, then I was right where I was supposed to be. If the demon wanted me to feel deflated and hoped to shut down my tiny church, then I needed to continue to invest in it.
Jesus has built his church, and the gates of hell will not stand against it. That word is for you, too, small church pastors. Stand strong.

I want there to be more supportive, smaller communities for people to be creative and share their efforts with people that do the same and get inspired by each other. Creativity in itself is worth it just for expressing yourself and sharing something of yourself with others - anyone can do it!
It’s so easy to try lean on mass social media to try and get that interaction and feedback, but most of the time it’s just shouting into a void. It doesn’t help that posting on a global platform contextualizes your effort against a global scale where to be noticed you often have to be exceptional - or at least funny.
But creativity doesn’t happen in a void, and it makes such a huge difference for an artist to get back a comment of encouragement or something positive. It can be super useful to get critique as well to develop, but that usually should be more of on request thing - and is much easier to have the trust for in a smaller group. For now I’ll do the best I can by trying to foster such environments and culture myself.
