Inserire l'hashtag #NSFW in modo che le altre persone possano evitare di incapparvi inavvertitamente durante l'orario di lavoro, a scuola o in situazioni di privacy limitata. In questa maniera eviteremo anche di essere bannati da altri server. #netiquette Grazie e buon divertimento!

  3. This guy on discord I'm always chatting to has a slur for a nickname.

It's mildly offensive in his country of USA but very offensive in Australia. Asked him about it and he said he had reclaimed the word.

All very good for him but I'm the one that has to type it!

  4. Liebe @Bundesregierung, werte Frau #Bas, sehr geehrter Herr #Merz,

  9. People who send unsubscribe requests to the mailing lists they're trying to unsubscribe from piss me off.
People who reply to those unsubscribe requests on the list piss me off more.
People who reply to those unsubscribe requests on the list and give wrong information about how to unsubscribe piss me off most of all.
Correct answer: look in the headers or footer of a message sent to the list for unsubscribe instructions and follow them.

  10. So, #mastodon If someone has an symbol or text beside there display name I don't understand, is it ok to message them to ask why? I'm bad at the social media etiquette thing. Is there Netiquette for mastodon?

  11. @reiver

I coined the name #Botiquette for this exact purpose, knowing about #Netiquette from the old days of the internet/web.

At the time I encouraged plenty discussion, but a lot of it happened on fedi and is now long lost in timeline history.

I did start a #SocialHub thread at the time, as well, though:

  12. A Quiet Whatsapp Experience

    Reading Time: 3 minutes

For a year or more I was part of GoSocial, because I’m curious. The experimental community is based on Whatsapp group chats. There is “one” chat per city, whether Nyon, Bale, Lausanne and others. I was part of Lausanne and Geneva. The first thing that struck me is that the community uses a chat client but that chats aren’t possible in the town groups, and they’re discouraged in event specific chats.

The rational is “Join the chat, discuss logistics, but nothing else, and don’t DM people unless you get permission first. That’s the first fallacy, in my eyes, a chat client being used instead of Meetup (expensive), Facebook(Facebook), Meet5 (expensive) and Strava (Sport centric).

I joined plenty of hikes and I enjoyed them. I enjoyed meeting groups to snowshoe hike, hike in Spring, and then in Summer. I enjoyed meeting new people. I was then distracted by cycling groups on Meetup.com and then Strava and then I didn’t really look back.

For me, Whatsapp is toxic, because it was bought and taken over by Facebook, and books like Mindf*ck show why Facebook owned apps should be avoided. The second reason is based around the netiquette that I grew up with, in contrast to the netiquette that mid to late adopters grew up with.

For me, once you join a chat it should remain alive, and be a place for people to socialise after an event. This community locks the chats, and prevents people from joining after the effect, and disabled photo downloading and sharing. To some this makes sense, since anyone can join a chat, but only 20 participate. That’s a lot of strangers with group photos, if you enable group downloading.

Participation to events is often list based, where you say Richard + 1, or you add your name to a Google Doc, or you’re added to the description and more. It’s only recently that I noticed that Whatsapp has “events” so this could very easily be used to keep track of events.

There was an experiment for winter, where Nyon had a group chat, and I really liked this concept. I liked the idea of having a town based chat, where we could actually chat, and propose things informally, rather than hierarchically.

Someone eventually said “This group has too much chatter” or something to that effect, and then three or four people went on for 20 or more messages to explain why we should stop chatter. In effect they became the noisiest people in the chat. When I saw this I suggested two options. We keed one chat for chatter, and we have another chat that is purely events. One verbose group and one lean group. Two liked it, two disliked the idea, and a third turned it into a joke.

A fourth shut down all chatter for the night and that’s when I decided to abandon the network. I am on a social network to be part of a social network where the rules of netiquette are followed. These rules weren’t being followed.

I understand and respect that we don’t all have the same values, and that’s why I chose to leave. For people that come home to family, or flat mates or other, then a Whatsapp chat, and community is a bonus feature so the quieter it is the happier they are.

I’m single, so for me that chatter is something to come home to, after activities, and on weekends, and on days off, such as today. If those that already have vibrant personal lives try to gatekeep, then the network goes from healthy, to toxic, for a person in my situation. I join such networks to fill the solitude between events. By disallowing chatter solitude is reinforced.

As a result of choosing to break away from GoSocial Whatsapp has become much, much, much quieter, to the point that I could uninstall the app, if only Whatsapp wasn’t the primary IM client normal people use.

Nothing negative happened. I simply applied the Marie Kondo “If it doesn’t bring joy, recycle it”. I use the term “recycle” because I prefer it to “throw it away”.

    And Finally

It’s likely that I will change my mind and rejoin at some point, but for now I prefer not to be part of a “social network” that controls too much. It is worth me focusing on strengthening my links with the convenient groups for a change. They want to control things. I think they’re wrong. That’s why I need to quit, for a time.

  19. @omar

    Depends on the context.

At $DAYJOB, I do as the Romans do and generally reply above the original message. It makes for a mess of unreadable thread context, incurs leaked sensitive information that folks fail to trim, and gazillions of copies of images from .signatures that just keep accruing like barnacles.

On mailing-lists and other more civilized places, I use trimmed quotes with inline responses because I'm not a brutish barbarian. #netiquette

  20. a post for helping ppl onboard to mastodon/fedi:

okie, so someone is wanting you to get on mastodon/fedi

    what the heck is it?

it's a better way to do life and share life online

you know how a gmail user can send things to a hotmail user?

    it's kinda like that

you choose a server (also called an instance) that is your home-base and then public posts you make are "federated" out to servers all around the world

you can choose to keep posts private and only limited to your followers or even to just one person

    there are no ads

there is no algorithm: we are the algorithm by reposting/boosting other ppls posts and being an active participant in creating things or just talking

it kinda feels like the Internet of old and it gives me hope

you can follow hashtags to get a feed of other folks doing similar things to you

many news orgs are on here too bc of flipboard

you can follow RSS feeds even with rss-parrot

wanna change your instance? you can! your followers and following lists can be imported to a new instance

some instances (like mine) have character counts past 10k, so you can post longer form content too

    what's "fedi" mean?

fedi or the fediverse refers to how it's not just Mastodon that counts in this network: there are many other compatible softwares besides mastodon that are still all interconnected

mastodon is a non-profit project developed on top of protocol called activity-pub and it's what drives the fediverse

for instance (heh), a good instance for fellow trans folks is transfem.social which uses a software called sharkey instead of mastodon, but they still communicate with each other

i recommend getting started on a mastodon instance:

sometimes, depending on the server, sign up times can take a min

but once you get on and established (did you remember to turn on your 2fa?), make sure to add some details to your profile!

a lot of folks here don't wanna interact with blank accounts or accounts with no posts

once you get a bit setup, how do you find ppl?

well, first recommendation is to create an introduction post (tagged with hashtags)

here is mine for an example:

    infosec.exchange/@sparklepanic

you can browse more related content by clicking on the hashtags in the post

hashtags are important to how discovery works on fedi

the culture of fedi is to ALWAYS use the CW (content warning) function for anything remotely 18+/nsfw and ALWAYS use alt-text on images (the descriptions for those with disabilities)

please don't boost images if they don't have alt-text

there are quite a few trans/poly/sex-positive ppl on fedi and the way we keep it nice is by making sure to always mark things with CW (even politics for a lot of folks is important, with "uspol" as the cw)

follow these to get started (not in any particular order, some do post 18+ occasionally, but they content warn)

following ppl is a bit different if they are on a different server:

when you click on them, if they don't share your home instance, you'll see something like "remote follow this person" and then you put your home instance URL into the box (to the instance ur already logged into) and then you can follow them!

another thing i should mention is defederation and codes of conduct: each instance has it's own code of conduct and the whole space has it's own version of netiquette, keeping ppl accountable for their posts and if it gets really bad, instances will "defederate" from each other so that you don't have to see content that is harmful or that doesn't abide by community standards

remember, these servers are basically all operated by volunteers: people with technical ability put them online at cost to themselves and they are usually administering it as a side-project or as a public service

make sure to throw some money at your instance admin if you can

fedi.tips/ is also a good resource! (or here on mastodon @FediTips

what the hecc app do i use?

i recommend using the progressive web app (PWA): this is the "add to home screen" thing in ur browser and it behaves like a native app

you'll also see i had typos in this post, but mastodon supports edits, so it's okie!

fedi is really cool and im so happy to be part of the community and hope that you too can be active online in ways that actually honor our humanity

  21. Cognitive responsibility: the three unwritten laws of the word

1️⃣ First unwritten law of the modern web: do not harm collective thought. It doesn't mean don't disagree. It means don't deliberately spread ignorance, disinformation, or verbal violence knowing you're doing it. The difference between error and arrogance lies entirely in intention. 2️⃣ Second unwritten law of the modern web: your opinion is not a fact. It can be interesting, provocative, even useful. But it remains an interpretation. Confusing these two planes is the main bug in […]

  22. PSA: if all you ever post is screenshots of other people's viral posts, but you omit the Alt-text, and you cannot be bothered to edit your post to add Alt-text even after other people comment to supply the Alt-text, then you're an absolute shit-heel and deserve to be blocked.

    #AltText #Accessability #Netiquette

  23. Today I was reminded that the use of hashtags can not only mean "hey, I think my post is so interesting that I want it to be found in a list of other relevant post about this subject", no - that the more important use might be "I can help people avoid seeing my post with this hashtag that they're currently filtering out".

    #netiquette

  24. #netiquette / #feditips
    * Please remember to CW
    * spell words correctly so filters and watch lists work, this isn't youtube comments where you get shadowbanned
    * Stop linking to instagram/x/etc posts, for those of us without accounts it just shows nothing. If you want to show something on fedi screenshot it and put it directly in the post.
    * Try not to quote post stuff from instances like .social, due to the spam waves they're limited on most other servers and the quote post gets filtered.

  25. RubyGems Etiquette question:

If I have a gem, FooBar (`foo_bar`), and I'll eventually ship sub-gems FooBar::Enhancement (`foo_bar-enhancement`) and FooBar::Addon (`foo_bar-addon`), would it be okay to immediately "name squat" those on ruby gems.org by shipping an empty v0.0.0 gem?
