  1. The whole assembly uses 8 of these little custom LED numeral PCBs: PCB size is only 23.2x22mm, featuring 3 numerals, 8 #WS2811 chips with 3 LED driver outputs each, which can be controlled similarly to a Neopixel: with a single pin from for example an ESP or a RaspberryPi Pico, you can provide a datastream providing the settings for the 3 outputs. Each chip takes the first 3 settings it receives and forwards the rest, so you can put them all in series.
The PCB itself has only 4 connections to the main PCB: +5V, GND and data in+out. These connections double as mechanical support.

  2. Learn here how to install the wLED binary, which means flashing your ESP32 microcontroller.

Make sure your power source is constant, which means use a uninterruptible power supply, UPS, at least while you are flashing!

Please do not brick your ESP32

  3. This is een important word of warning from the wLED Creator

New setups should use the ESP32 not the dated ESP8266 because that micro controller reaches end of life / end of support soon. The ESP32 also has Bluetooth which The ESP8266 lacks.

  4. Now you can learn how to do the wLED control on the Raspberry Pi5

So first start with my previous post then come to this one. Of course you understand why this logic is used; first learn to crawl then Sprint.

  5. My SBC of choice is the Raspberry Pi5
I want to control wLED with it!

So i dug further and found this site, where you learn from scratch how to start with the ESP8266

  6. Today I learned about an incredible project for the ESP32 project WLED! ✨

It's an implementation of a ESP32/ESP8266 webserver to control NeoPixel LEDs

Read all about it on the website.

. Чиать далее

  8. Fun question for #homeassistant #esphome fans and #ws2811/#fastled LED experts. I have an LED string with 50 LEDs on it, but I have to tell ESPHome that it has 54, or the last four LEDs won't update.
The second LED has the wrong colour if I have it lit, and seems to eat two LEDs worth of data.
Can anyone figure out what might be going wrong? I think the second LED might be faulty or have the wrong driver chip fitted.

  9. Some updates on the WS2811 led mapped letters project.

I got them mapped, thanks to @jasoncoon 's amazing pixel mapper tool and advice on splitting up the pins, (each letter is on its own pin now).

Its a little jittery. I lowered the FPS from 120 to 40, and removed all the delays in the loop which helped, (using the fastLED library with arduino), but there still seems to be something giving it the jitters.

Pushing about 760 LEDs, and using an Adafruit feather M4.

I may try taking out some print statements I added in the loop for debugging earlier.

Totally open to suggestions though, and happy to share my code.

  10. @jasoncoon great suggestion with splitting the channels to multiple pins. After a bit of fiddling with the code and piecing together examples I got three letters on different pins of the rp2040 feather (will add more tomorrow). Thanks to Jason's handy dandy Pixel mapper, I mapped em so rainbows go from top to bottom an side to side of the letters.

I think those residual flickers are from the crappy connectors. Still not sure where to get good LED strips. 3 and 24 VDC is way more persnickety than 8kvAC :)

Time for bed now. Sooo much neon to bend tomorrow and LEDs to program.

  11. Hey @jasoncoon ,

Have you ever controlled 800 or so WS2811 LEDs with your pixel mapper? We edge lit wrapped all these letters at work and I wanna map em so I can make em rainbow fade from top to bottom.

Sure the fastled strip effects are cool, but I really wanna get the pixels mapped for more neat things. I figure with 8mb of ram, the RP2040 or M4 #Adafruit feathers might be nice?

    Programming is fun :)
