The serial LED strip stuff on ESP IDF is pretty good, a standard library. e.g. neopixel, etc.

It used RMT (IR Remote Control) to generate the series of pulses.

But a better way is to use SPI. And the library now does that too.

But I wanted something the library does not do.

Ability to have a strip that is, say, RGB, linked to another that is RGBW. Send 3 bytes for first X pixels and 4 for the rest, etc.

So, ended up making my own SPI based serial LED driver.

Yay, it works.

Learn here how to install the wLED binary, which means flashing your ESP32 microcontroller.

Make sure your power source is constant, which means use a uninterruptible power supply, UPS, at least while you are flashing!

Please do not brick your ESP32

This is een important word of warning from the wLED Creator

New setups should use the ESP32 not the dated ESP8266 because that micro controller reaches end of life / end of support soon. The ESP32 also has Bluetooth which The ESP8266 lacks.

This is my favourite most ambitious design. Its a portable LED umbrella with 10 panels of 257 #sk6812 60ppm pixels. Driven by an #esp32 using 10ch output via i2s. Im rendering realtime video from a webcam using #resolume over wifi via the #artnet protocol. Its powered by a 100w USBC powerbank that outputs 20v at 5A to an #sbec module that converts to 5V

Working on a new double visor with 2 slots of 2 x 12mm #sk6812 5050 144ppm strip laid horizontaly in each one. Each blade has a 5mm air gap for optimal diffusion

The Shell tool creates the air gap that is essential in delivering this gorgeous diffusion. Recently received a small batch of RGBwW LEDs. These are #SK6812 in a 5050 package. Similar to the common #WS2812 or “Neopixel” but with an addition fourth (warm) white channel.
They also work with the #Neopixel and #FastLED libraries for μCs.
