@neonbubble I've been fortunate and privileged enough to visit several #volcanoes and have seen the bright red lava flowing down the side of #MountEtna from sea at night; beautiful and mesmerizing
If you haven't already, you might appreciate watching #FireOfLove by #NationalGeographic on #DisneyPlus about the careers of noted #volcanologist couple Katia and Maurice #Krafft, and on #Netflix, the sobering, terrifying #TheVolcano #RescueFromWhakaari in #NewZealand about its deadly 2019 #eruption.

Hi! I'm Geoff Lerner, a #volcanologist from the US currently based in Mexico for my postdoc. I'm particularly interested in studying volcanic #hazards like pyroclastic flows and #lava dome collapses. I like to use a bunch of different field and lab methods, especially paleomagnetism (see photo!).
I also am interested in promoting better #inclusion in our discipline, especially when it comes to how we do our fieldwork.

Melted & fused Compact Cassettes belonging to #volcanologist David Johnston, found by his colleagues after he was killed in the eruption of Mount Saint Helens (1980) as seen in the documentary Fire of Love (2022).

These astonishing photos of this week’s Hawaiian volcano Mauna Loa by Harry Durgin are strikingly like one of 19thC British Romantic painter John Martin’s apocalyptic visions brought to life.
Just look at The Great Day of His Wrath (1851) & The Fallen Angels Entering Pandemonium (attrib? 1841).

Re-posting my #introduction for the newest Mastodon friends:
I'm Jessica Ball, a physical #volcanologist who specializes in #volcano stability, volcanic #hazard modeling, assessment, and communication. I work for a US volcano #observatory and #scicomm is actually part of my job! I also dabble in #usability, #Python & #datavis.
In my free time, I #forage, #knit, and hike stuffed animals to the tops of (small) volcanoes.

No matter how many times I walk up to an eruption deposit the sheer size of them still blows my mind. I promise you I didn't realize the pun I just made until I wrote it.
This is in the Pumice Plain at Mount St. Helens, the area devastated by the May 18, 1980 eruption. Erosion has been digging a path through the rocks and ash deposited during the hot violence of that day. Volcanologist for scale.

Hello! #introduction 🌋 I'm a #volcanologist at #UEA interested in #volcanoes, reducing disaster risk and sharing knowledge .. I think (!) I've migrated things here from other servers. I love science but also love other ways of making sense of this beautiful 🌍

#introduction I’m a #volcanologist and #geoscience communicator. I research how #volcanoes work and their impact on people and the environment. Dedicated to raising awareness of the critical role geoscience plays in #sustainable development and for society through media engagement and as Co-Founder and Director of the Earth Futures Festival. I advocate for #equity, #diversity and #inclusion in geosciences and co-founded #WOMEESA

I'm a #volcanologist from the Philippines working mostly with #Taal and #Mayon volcanoes. I work mostly on #electromagnetics applications and methods, but also used to work with #seismic methods (#tomography). Nowadays though #DRRM (disaster risk reduction and management) occupies most of my time. I also do seismic hazards from time to time but volcanic eruptions are more exciting and spectacular.
Picture below was back 2014 when I was finishing up my PhD, inside Taal Volcano Main Crater. -

Hi! I'm a #volcanologist in #NewZealand (not part of Australia) working on a few different things, but mostly Ngauruhoe #volcano, or the real Mount Doom from LOTR.
I have been working to get #eruption information out to people over on the bird app and through media when needed, and helping people learn about our volcanically active planet.
Now part of the #Twittermirgration and hopefully ready for the learning curve. #Introduction #Scicomm

A bit more about me by way of #introduction. I'm an Earth Scientist who specialises in #volcanology, #scicomm, #pedagogy and #EDI.
I'm a field #volcanologist by training, and my #research focuses on catastrophic flows like pyroclastic density currents and lahars. I'm interested in quantifying the link between process (current) and product (deposit) to ultimately improve our field interpretations of the volcanic rock record. I hope this will lead to better understanding of these hazardous flows
