  1. CW: My Message to new Users

    Hello new users!!

I want to give you all a message! Welcome to the #Fediverse!! You will find a lot of different instances or servers, quite a few are, unlike Twitter, friendly to members of the #LGBTQIA community! I recommend following hashtags, so they will appear in your feed. There is no algorithms here, so your feed is what you make of it.

And if you find an instance that is full of users you don't like, you don't need to get your instance admin to block that instance, you can block that entire instance yourself.

Also different instances have different emojis, rules, character limits, etc... don't be afraid to experiment with different instances. Many people switcu from one instance to another. You can even transfer your follows and followers from one instance to another.

Also remember, while optional, you can always donate to your server admins... they usually do all of this out of the kindness of their heart, and don't make money off of any outside source, besides from donations, and what job(s) they may have outside the Fediverse.

  2. Il s'est passé quelque chose entre hier et aujourd'hui pour que ma TL ne parle à nouveau que de #twitter et des nouveaux arrivants sur #mastodon? J'avais l'impression que ça allait mieux en début de semaine.

  3. CW: Positive vibes for Twitter

Like many of you, I am glad to have landed on this platform AND I am sad abt what’s happening to Twitter. The optimist in me thinks that years from now, many of us here would look back at our Mastodon accounts and think of this #Twittermirgration as our brief refuge before storming back and reclaiming the bird app.

It may not pan out that way. Many of you may not even want it to be that way - but that’s ok too.

I’m holding on to home and making the most of now. Here.

  4. Interesting to see herds of old tuskers here telling us how easy it is to switch servers and still keep all your followers, while their herdmates are moaning about big Twitter accounts coming over here and magically gaining masses of new followers before they’ve done anything interesting.

  5. CW: #twittermigration notes

I’m adding servers and hopping onto their local and federated timelines and…I think I love Mastodon? #Twittermirgration

  7. This is some weird perspective, IMO. Social media isn't the problem – the problem is what big tech did to social media. Wanting to talk to people of either similar or diversely different interests is healthy, and being online in the '90s gave me access to people that didn't exist in my high school or work or sports cohorts.

I wanted to talk Star Trek, I wanted to talk comic books. I *could* (and sometimes did) seek out the fan clubs in my area, but chatting with fellow fans on IRC and forums was just... easier, and less pressure.

Coming here is like chatting online in the '90s. We're not being forcefed anything by algos. THAT is the problem at Twitter, with or without Elon.

  8. For any #Newcomers who are apart of #Twittermirgration I just want to say that the Yuito app is the best mobile app for mastodon I have ever used. Tooot is okay as well, and I have heard several use Tusky, but Yuito has been the best experience for me.

  9. @Gargron congratulations. And thank you for creating a place for #Twittermirgration refugees.

  10. Something refreshing coming to Mastodon is not being bombarded with algorithm-pandering posts: the lame engagement posts where people ask the same few questions over and over because they know it'll get likes and comments.

At least that's what I'm seeing so far!

  11. Lots of people joining the #Twittermirgration but for me the shift has been more about a slightly different experience, rather than copying what I have on the bird app.

  12. Greetings - I’m part of the great #Twittermirgration and I’ve been on Twitter for 15+ years since I was IDC’s first social software analyst.

    Here’s my #intro

The thread which connects my interests and expertise is a fascination with power and how it’s negotiated between individuals, how it informs structures, and how individuals perceive it.

The pieces of my Venn Diagram are:

    A - Analysis/observation
    B - Governance/controls
    C - Communities
    D - Leadership
    E - Design/structure

  13. @stux YES! There's a pioneering, rebel spirit to this place that's been gone from my internet experience for years. I didn't realize how much I had missed it. #twitterefugee #Twittermirgration

  14. @mmasnick

this is my #feditips for new people's #intro into #fediverse

i'm mostly on #android and i'd recommend people to get the yuito app, it has reasonably good amount of customizable options that can match the look and feel of certain other platform

there is probably a similar app on iOS that keeps things simple and familiar
