Last stop in Washington State... @Leighton and I went to Mt St Helens Volcanic National Monument. We hiked for a better view than can be seen from the road, due to a closure of SR504 beyond Coldwater Lake where a bridge was washed out in 2023 and is being rebuilt. We could see into the crater up to the lava dome and Crater Glacier, as well as evidence of the mudflows and regrowth of forests. #roadtrip #travel #volcano #geology #MtStHelens #PNW

I ended up pulling my scrap book out and snapped this picture to share from May 19th. This was taken at 10am with 6 measurable inches per the notes on the back.
The Map is current day, my house is the red pin top left, my elementary school is bottom right, I walked. Before all the stuff built up most of that was empty lots or abandoned buildings. A lot of the lots closer to the school were filled 8+ feet high from I-90 and city streets.
You can see a kid on a bike on the left side of the bush, it was 2 kids, red bandannas. I remember them yelling at each other before the cop car flagged them down.

45 years ago today was the eruption on Mount St Helens (thanks other people on here for reminding me). Remember seeing bits of this news photographer as part of a BBC Horizon soc. The full footage is haunting stuff esp later in the video as he is shrouded in ash and darkness.

I've been fascinated by Mt. St.Helens ever since I first saw the eruption on TV in 1980 as a kid in East Germany, and later watching an impressive documentary at the IMAX in Seattle in 1995. It took me another 21 years, until 2016, to set foot on the mountain myself and I visited again many times over the following 5 years... truly one of the most interesting places I've ever been to, witnessing both geology and biology evolving in realtime...
So, tonight on the 45th anniversary of the (in)famous eruption, it's time to watch this old Minute by Minute episode again:

An event I'll never forget. I lived in western Washington, a safe distance from Mt. St. Helens when it blew. It was today (Sunday even), 45y ago at this exact time. The scientists & journalists that warned the public away & documented the eruption to the end were heroes.
