NASA’s ensemble forecast named the minute an August solar eruption would reach Earth, but its 22-hour uncertainty window shows why one perfect hit does not solve space weather

🌋 Kilauea volcano‘s currently active eruption in Hawaii https://www.youtube.com/live/mKJ7ZyIdjeQ
The bright orange eruptions, orange streaks of lava flow, orange lit clouds of smoke & steam all contrasted against the black sky and land are quite the visual ASMR. Paired with the ASMR wind from the mountain, the effect is quite calming and peaceful.
Putting this on a projector is quite the night light to fall asleep to (requires YouTube Premium to avoid noisy ads interruptions that harsh your mellow)

No #eclipse here. Sun set before the moon had the time to cover it, it was cloudy anyway, and when it didn't rain rain, it rained volcanic ash.

I've mentioned in the past that among other things, we rely on the #Meteosat geostationary satellites to monitor #MtEtna. Even though the spatial resolution is low (the sub-satellite pixel has a nominal resolution of 3km), these satellites provide information at a high temporal rate: MSG (Meteosat Second Generation) provides full-disk images are available every 15 minutes, and a RSS (Rapid Scan Service) that only covers Europe, with data available every 5 minutes. The RSS satellite is also located at 9° of longitude east, so there is less distortion on the Etna (~15° longitude).
The main downside of RSS is that the service is not continuous: every 26 days, the satellite goes into “Full Earth Scan” mode for two days: this is needed to keep the mechanisms in good working order, and the data from these scans is NOT made available, which means that every 26 days there's a 2-day hole in the RSS data.
And obviously this happens during an ongoing #eruption. Murphy's law strikes again!

Cotopaxi (1862) by American landscape painter Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900).
Cotopaxi is one of the highest volcanos in the Andes Mountains of South America. Like many of his contemporaries, Church was fascinated by volcanos both because of their power and because they were a prime subject of contemporary scientific research, which was in the process of proving that the Earth was much older than previously believedhttps://stellar-art.pixels.com/featured/cotopaxi-1862-frederic-edwin-church-1826-1900.html
