A Stop in Washington State
We took a quick day trip to revisit Mount Rainier and Mount Saint Helens.
Helens had a cloud cover so the sleeping volcano was not fully visible. It was a nice day with lots of sun, some clouds lingered in areas, adding drama to the sky. We climbed the staircase to view Spirit Lake and the surrounding mountain ranges.
At Mount Rainier, it was crowded as usual. And of course the Instagram culture made the visitors hold up lines to some viewing spots. This was not the only place we have seen smartphone users hold up locations. It’s a shame that some people feel like they need to dress up and make others wait to take in the scenic view whilst they take many pictures of themselves to post on social media for likes. This behavior should be done when one is alone, and then you should have the courtesy of moving out of the way when others arrive to the viewpoint, if you are not yet done.
Do leave the “glam portraits” in a studio setting. Do candid memory pictures on trails. There is no need to take more than 3 selfies at the viewpoint. Maybe buy Kodak disposable cameras for your next outing and put your phone away so there is only 24 usages, instead of endless ones. And be surprised when viewing the prints as you are reliving the memories of the trip later. Like we did before smartphones. Your trips and pictures should be about happy memories and not for social media likes.
Before leaving for our road trip, I learned about a Lensbaby photo contest and took one of these lenses with me. Since we lived near Mount Rainier National Park for a few years and visited the park several times, I decided to use the artistic lens here. The lens adds a soft focus and blur to the image. Depending on the settings the blur and light effect can be extreme or minimal. I prefer a minimal amount of the blur so that there is still structure to the image.
Here are a few pictures that I took with the Lensbaby Velvet at Christine Falls, Narada Falls and at the Myrtle Falls bridge.

I have a vivid memory of visiting the Mt. St. Helens blast zone in the early 80s. All of the trees for miles were flattened, stripped of their branches. The fallen trunks were aligned with their tips pointing away from the epicenter, like a vector field. #Helens #MountStHelens

Happy Loowit Blew It day. Yep, that's what we're calling it now.

Wow, I’m old. 46 years ago today, I remember standing by the open south-facing window in my apartment in Vancouver, Canada and hearing a faint boom.
Turns out it was Mount St Helens erupting - later watching the developing devastation on the news.

Portland International KPDX → Seattle–Tacoma International KSEA
A scenic route past the famous and jaw-dropping Mount St. Helens, all while keeping the equally legendary Mt. Rainier constantly in sight.
Time flew by way too fast, because the Lancair Evolution seems to be all about one thing: covering ground quickly.

🐿️🌋 In 1980 researchers helicoptered #gophers onto the barren slopes of Mount St. Helens to test their role as #ecosystem engineers.
By digging through volcanic #ash, the #rodents brought vital mycorrhizal #fungi to the surface and sparked a #plant explosion that's still visible four decades later.

Mount St. Helens this morning from the Cougar Sno-Park. Today was field trip two (of three) of the Volcano Naturalist program with the Mount St. Helens Institute. We hiked through the lower part of Ape Cave by special permit. #photography #mountains #volcano #mountsthelens #PNW #landscape #nature #MSHI

I'm enrolled in the Volcano Naturalist Certification program with Mount St. Helens Institute. The first lecture starts this Tuesday and the first field trip is a week from Saturday. Needless to say, I'm pretty excited about it. It's a fulfillment of a lifelong passion to be a bona fide naturalist. After a career of discovering, characterizing, and cleaning up contamination, this is where I'm at. #naturalist #nature #geology #volcano #history #ecology #MountStHelens #PNW https://www.mshinstitute.org/volcano-naturalist

On this day in 1980, Mount St Helens erupted. I was living in Vancouver, Canada at the time and distinctly remember hearing the rumble - all those miles away. Watching the TV later in the day, the devastation was breathtaking.
Also encouraged folks closer to Mt Rainer and Baker to give them more than a sideways glance and to consider what they are capable of.
