Strong easterly–southeasterly winds in the vicinity of Mount St. Helens have picked up loose volcanic ash deposited during the 1980 eruptions and are carrying it to the west–northwest. The resuspended ash has been reported by commercial pilots in the area. "

On this day in 1980, Mount St Helens erupted. I was living in Vancouver, Canada at the time and distinctly remember hearing the rumble - all those miles away. Watching the TV later in the day, the devastation was breathtaking.

"Strange odor in SW Washington definitely wasn’t from Mount St. Helens, scientists say"
The smell was so foul that people immediately thought it was the volcano. However, the scientists traced that strange odor to a certain Max Wells. He apparently let out a fart so stinky that it was smelled for miles. Janice Wells, his wife, tears running down her cheeks from the smell, told reporters, "He had a black bean burrito just before he farted."

I’ve finally officially laid eyes on #GlacierPeak/#Dakobed, the 5th of Washington State’s 5 stratovolcanoes. It’s just hiding in plain sight, among the #CascadeRange peaks NE of #Seattle and actually visible from the city on good days. A magnificent, slumbering monster, capable of the same sort of violence as #MountStHelens/#WyEast, but so remote that it’s only been possible to install one monitoring station so far.
Every #volcano deserves our respect, awe, and reverence.
