The bit that you skip #185: Soundgarden – Fourth of July
By now you’ve realised I was a loner growing up. Nothing but music and whatever idea I had in my head, notebook and pencil/pen on hand, ready to write something I would eventually matter of factly discard.
Contrary to other grunge bands, Soundgarden clicked right away with me. It was the impossibly weird tunings. It was the crunchy distortions. It was the eerie bass work. It was Chris Cornell’s beautiful, tortured vocals. It was a dark flame and I was attracted to it.
Superunknown, Siamese Dream, and Crash Test Dummies’ The Ghost that haunt me now were all bought on the same day at the now extinct Tower Records on Niza, on Mexico’s Zona Rosa. I always felt their selection was nicer, the prices were amiable, and they even had a section of bootlegs. My brother drove me and I absolutely loved all three albums, as distinct as they were from each other.
Through the years, I’ve found out that people love Fourth of July as much as I do. An oddity at first listen, it has a certain mesmerising property in its macabre. “Down in the hole/Jesus cracks a smile/beneath another shoveload”. The thanatic nature of the song, full of downbeat pessimism was crack for teenage Sam. Adult Sam agrees on this too.
Any patriotic day has always felt weird for me. My mind can’t comprehend how gung ho you need to be to set an specific day to celebrate your own country. I guess it doesn’t make sense in a way a birthday doesn’t make sense, but we still celebrate it anyways.
This is not going to be a commentary on the USA. I don’t feel qualified and I don’t think it’s my right to criticise a country when my own isn’t doing that great all over. If you want to celebrate your country, you should do it. And if you want to fix a country, start local, always.

The Tower Records Experience
I lived in London from late 1990 until the very end of 1998. One of my favourite places for shopping in those days was the excellent Tower Records. There were two stores then, but I only ever visited the one at Number 10 Piccadilly as it was very conveniently placed to skive off from meetings of the Royal Astronomical Society at Burlington House, which is just round the corner.
It wasn’t just the huge selection of records, tapes and CDs across all musical genres but also the extremely helpful and knowledgeable staff. I always found their advice very helpful and often left with many more things than I intended to buy when I went in.
Tower records was acquired by the Virgin Group in 2003 and the store in Piccadilly closed down completely in 2009. I haven’t been past the site recently, but I think it is vacant and awaiting redevelopment.
The reason for mentioning this is that Tower Records is alive and well and living in Dublin. There are two stores in the city but I’ve only ever been to the larger one in Dawson Street. It’s not as big as the one in Piccadilly, but it does have a very good selection of music (including a large section of classical music) and very friendly staff. It also has a wide range of hifi equipment, including turntables for those of us who have a vinyl collection. It also has an online service. The last thing I ordered from them was delivered to my house in Maynooth the next day at no charge.
It brought back a lot of memories when I first went inside as it has the same old yellow and red signage and very much the same vibe as the old London store; you can see some interior pictures here. Tower Records (Ireland) is highly recommended for those who are nostalgic for the old Tower Records (London) as well as those who just want to visit a proper, independent, music store. I hope it not only survives but prospers.

I'm doing the final hand stitching on a new handbag and watching a documentary about Tower Records. It's very good at communicating the culture at the company. I worked there and loved it. I may have stayed if it paid better but it was a great place to work for a young person. I have so many stories about my time there. What a blast. - Getting halfway down the block after leaving when my friend finally realizes who we just passed and screaming "Matt Pinfield, you rule!"
- Getting stuck in a crowd one afternoon which led me to watching an in-store by Skeleton Key. Absolutely mind-blowing. The percussionist did, in fact, set up with a bathtub.

I live in the city where it started! And I had a weird deja vu shock when I moved to Dublin (Ireland) in 2008 and started exploring downtown and suddenly came upon that familiar yellow sign with the reverse-slant red-on-yellow type. Before #TowerRecords evaporated, they sold off franchise rights abroad, so you can still find the original Tower stores here and there—like in Ireland and also Japan. I spent a lot of time in that Dublin Tower purely for the nostalgia.

I tend to cycle through #sitcoms to have on in the background. Lately, it’s been either #TheOffice or #Superstore. Past sitcoms include #KillingIt, #GoldenGirls and #Frasier. If I had to rank them, I think it would be hard, but Golden Girls and Frasier have a special place in my heart since I watched them in my youth and loved them even then. Superstore is perhaps my favorite adult sitcom. It reminds me of my time working in retail as a young adult. Especially #TowerRecords. #TVParty #tv

This goes back to when I lived with my roommate in Glendale, AZ in 1994. One day he picked up the CD during one of our many trips to #TowerRecords... The album had just come out. This song hit me in a weird way and I've come back to it many times after all these years.

A great example of plotting a path towards reviving a still-beloved brand. My only quibble is that Tower, while global at its peak, has California roots. I hope that a similar "Tower Labs" location in LA is in the works.
