  1. I'm so old I'm reading accounts of the demise of an actor I never heard of and scratching my head at an obituary of #columbiahouse that for some reason makes it sound like the company started with mail order CDs (formed in '55 as Columbia Record Club, became CH in the early 70's).

  2. RE: flipboard.com/@pitchfork/news-

I had no idea they still existed. I joined when I was a kid back in the late 70s, thinking I was getting the bargain of my dreams. My Mom *never* let me off the hook for that one. 😆 I still have the Bowie album.

  3. 2001 Get 4 DVDs For 49¢ Each? You'd Be A Fool Not To!
Remember the thrill of membership clubs and scoring incredible deals on your favorite movies?

  4. #ColumbiaHouse was a popular mail-order music and video club that operated from 1955 to 2010.

Members could purchase discounted albums, CDs, VHS tapes, and later DVDs, with a "buy one, get one free" or "8 CDs for a penny" type of promotion.

The company was known for its innovative marketing strategies and played a significant role in shaping the music industry.

Ah yes: the old #ColumbiaHouse mail-order record club. Sure, it enabled me to get that Grand Funk album I'd been hankering for since first hearing "We're An American Band". But then . . . I'd have to buy a bunch of lesser, rando picks (maybe The Guess Who? or BTO? Perhaps a later Sweet rec?) - paying full list price for the privilege. I'd come up short every time.

  6. A girl is born in 1979. Her mother buys her a lifetime subscription to Tiger Beat magazine, signs her up for the Columbia House Record Club, and buys her a top of the line typewriter.

A girl is born in 2024. Her mother buys her a twitter blue account, reserves her user ID on Instagram, and signs her up for TikTok.

Which girl is more out-of-date by the time she gets to age 21?

  7. Who else stuck their favourite CD stickers to the card and mailed it in?

  8. Prior to that, I had only really listened to the radio with my parents. So, only listened to their music. I was 11 by mid-1994 and I wanted to kind of learn my own taste in music. So, this was a perfect chance to do so.

What about you? Even if you weren't alive or were little in 1994, imagine what CDs you would get at that time.

  9. Since I asked the question, I should probably answer it. I actually did this around that time as an 11 year old kid. What I did was I had no clue of what was good or not, so I did a smattering of ANYTHING that was popular at the time to try to figure out my taste in music.

    Here are some examples:

Ace of Base - The Sign
    Boyz II Men - II
Crash Test Dummies - God Shuffled His Feet
Hootie & the Blowfish - Cracked Rear View
    Green Day - Dookie
    Nirvana - Nevermind
Shaquille O'Neil - Shaq Fu: Da Return

    No, I am not kidding.

  10. The year is 1994. You got a flier in the mail from #ColumbiaHouse that you can get 12 compact discs for a penny! With some other fine print about buying more later. Whatever.

What 12 CDs are you going to pick for this, clearly legitimate promotion?
