A lot of Americans probably don't feel like celebrating occasions like this right now. Some may feel conflicted about appearing happy.

Do it. Celebrate. Do joy. We need that to keep going.

Let others wonder what you are celebrating. If you were in the crowds I was in, it's clear that the version of America we celebrated started in our own communities where food is complex and mysterious words slip into our vocabularies because we've heard someone else use them so much.

I did see some signs that some people were uneasy being seen. For that reason, I used my camera a bit differently this year, but a lot of these people had to earn their right to be part of the American conversation and they're clearly not complying in advance.

I shot a very well attended 4th of July Parade in Monterey, CA. I have some fun shots from the parade, but the ones I'm most pleased by are these face in the crowd shots I was able to get after the parade ended.

Every time I'm in a crowd, I try to get shots like this, but it's always hit or miss... mostly miss. This time, I got exceedingly lucky and very noticeable faces kept appearing out of the sea of humanity over and over again for me.

One thing I like about photographing fireworks is that they are so outside normal sensory experience and have so much range in brightness that you can get interesting photos with different exposures and even when the autofocus "fails" you can get a pretty image
