  1. Given all of the #AI #shittification a web of trust built on a friend-to-friend basis appears to be inevitable for anything remotely like the current internet to exist moving forward.

Literally no point in interacting with any of the AI shit besides writing your own bot to hide, close, remove, ... it wherever possible...

  2. We're still definitely at the gaffer tape, bendy mirrors, and magic smoke stage of making #smarthome tech behave in any sane way for people who aren't terminally tech-oriented

About half of everything works just fine, and the other half requires wiring a heap of potentially unreliable open-source projects together behind the scenes.

Add on to that an attempt at de- #shittification by removing various Google owned devices and services and it's extra fun.

Right now, our smart home stack consists of Home Assistant, #HomeKit (Apple) with #HomeBridge supplying some services, legacy Google/Nest things and devices from a couple of key vendors and a handful-and-a-half of others with one or two devices. .

I'm happy to faff about with this stuff in my spare time to make things work, but making something useful and usable for a person with multiple disabilities who relies on a voice assistant and a partner who doesn't have the bandwidth to play around in #HomeAssistant isn't straightforward by any means.

  3. The #shittification of #cloud begins:

"Bringing cloud and AI capabilities to the tactical edge: Google Distributed Cloud air-gapped appliance is generally available"

"#AI" BS meets someone else's computer ("cloud").

    No chance for #deshittification anymore.

  4. The Shittification (sic) of Britain's rivers and seas as a reult of the privatisation of the UK's water companies - must be the most Literal and Graphic example of #Shittification (aka #shitification ) you can get.

Renationalising water could fix sewage crisis – but no major party will do it

  5. The job of college/university #professor in the USA is becoming shittified, largely by management (though they're downstream from reduced public funding, politician games, and American obsession with corporatizing everything).

I would personally like a new career, something I never thought I'd say. My own job has suffered from #shittification due to micromanagement, management weaponization of student complaints, constant management assault on autonomy and shared governance (not to even mention tenure), workload creep (and dump), etc.

However, those might all be manageable if they--and other factors--didn't add up to a significant reduction in meaningfulness of the job.

When I felt my job meant something, that my efforts mattered in ways I cared about, that I was contributing to something worthwhile, I didn't mind the long hours, low pay, unrecognized workload additions, publication/funding rat race, standard problem students, etc.

A sense of meaning went a long, long way toward balancing all those things.

Without that sense of meaning--which I'm finding increasingly difficult to ferret out of the cracks between all the top-down and bottom-up bullshit--I find myself wondering why I put up with, and do, all the ridiculous, frustrating things for a salary that allows me to buy a 10-year-old car once a decade.

If I could find that sense of meaning, I'd stay. Without it, I don't see much difference between the corporate world I currently work in and another, hopefully more lucrative, corporate world.
