The Skye Boat Song, sung by Kenneth McKellar
My parents had an LP from the World Record Club of songs by McKellar. I loved this one from the very beginning. So poignant. It's high on my bucket list to cross the sea to Skye–even though there's a bridge these days!
🎵Speed, bonnie boat, like a bird on the wing.
Onward, the sailors cry!
Carry the lad that’s born to be King
Over the sea to Skye.🎵#JukeboxFridayNight #OnTheWater #ScottishFolk #McKellar #Scotland

CW: Racism against Travellers
I heard Ewan MacColl's fantastic 'Moving On Song' for the first time this weekend - written for his radio ballad The Travelling People in 1964.
Its calls out the irony of a racist settled population continually telling Travellers to 'Go! Move! Shift!'
This version by Siobhan Miller and Kris Drever is great; bold and catchy - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtI92VGtyK0
Utter pish that the song is 60 years old and hasn't dated a day.

A few months ago someone on Wikipedia suggested merging the (very sparse) Sandy Bell's page with Hamish Henderson's - which I thought was a terrible idea since Henderson was neither A Pub or The Revival.
Onyway, I finally got round to adding a few edits to expand the Bell's page but it's still in need of much overhaul if anybody's a Bells enthusiast.

We revisit Alasdair Roberts and Robin Robertson’s ‘Hirta Songs’, inspired by the people, landscape and history of the remote Scottish archipelago of St Kilda. The album also featured Robin Williamson of the Incredible String Band and Scottish harpist Corrina Hewat. #folk #folkmusic #scottishfolk #stkilda https://www.folkradio.co.uk/2023/07/revisited-alasdair-roberts-robin-robertson-hirta-songs/

Latest Review: Johnny tells us that this is the third Dàimh album he's had the pleasure of reviewing for Folk Radio - "...and my enjoyment of and respect for their music just keeps on growing." If you’ve not sampled their music before, listening to Sula is a great place to start. And if you have, you’ll already be ordering your copy. #folk #scottishfolk #albumreview https://www.folkradio.co.uk/2023/06/daimh-sula-album-review/

A Featured Album of the Month: Lauren MacColl's creative star shows no sign of waning: in fact, her new album 'Haar' might be her most accomplished and rewarding work to date, an ambitious album of painterly beauty, on which the sadness of experience is offset by the constant awareness of the world’s wonders and complexities. #folk #folkmusic #albumreview #featuredalbumofthemonth #scottishfolk https://www.folkradio.co.uk/2023/06/lauren-maccoll-haar-album-review/

Ooh… this is giving me shivers. Studio recordings of the great Jeannie Robertson are drenched in entirely unnecessary reverb, this is essentially a field recording and it's brilliant – she needed no help from the studio.

Latest Review: In part inspired by Sorley MacLean’s poem ‘An Cuilithionn / The Cuillin’, Duncan Chisholm’s “Black Cuillin” is, by any measure, an extraordinary achievement, a complete joy and a deeply immersive experience. Duncan is premiering Black Cuillin at Celtic Connections. #folk #folkmusic #scottishfolk https://www.folkradio.co.uk/2023/01/duncan-chisholm-black-cuillin/

My daughter needs to find a Scottish Bagpipe player to pipe in the haggis (and I think play a bit more as well) at a Burns Night dinner she's organising in Cambridge. There's a fee and a lovely free dinner. 25th Jan. If someone needs to travel I can put them up for the night.
Anyone? Please contact me.
Please share to spread the word!

The face of a man who has just bought himself another #guitar 🥳
I wanted an electro acoustic nylon strung guitar for recording and playing live. I bought an #Alvarez hybrid classical guitar - a fraction of the cost of my Gibsons and it sounds great!#americana #folkmusic #folk #rootsmusic #singersongwriter #guitarist #singer #songwriter #music #musician #guitars #loveguitars #notanotherguitar #guitarguitarepsom
