  1. CW: Article: Grïgnyr the Ecordian by Geoff Bottone

    I read Grïgnyr the Ecordian, Geoff Bottone's retelling of infamously-terrible fantasy novella The Eye of Argon. Which I hadn't read when I started, so I needed to read that first. Bottone's version is an enormous improvement... and that's an incredible achievement.

    With a little shallot and whisky 'marmalade'. #BurnsNight belatedly for sundry uninteresting reasons. I can also hugely recommend Dijon mustard on the side, which goes extremely well.

  4. It's a bit tardy, but with so many Burns Suppers still to be had this year, let this whet your whistle for whisky and haggis.

    My take on #BurnsSupper.

    Haggis is hard to find in my Canadian province, despite the very high proportion of people here with Scottish origins. Every year I say I'm going to plan ahead and order one, but I'm terrible at planning and every year I end up not making dinner at all.

    This year I just forged ahead with a shredded roast beef instead, and it turned out lovely. Pictured here with neaps & tatties and a whisky gravy.

  6. My 2001 cartoon for Burn’s night. Truly a man for all ages. I was surprised to find that Woodie Guthrie was a fan. And also Maya Angelou. I shouldn’t have been. stooryduster.co.uk/scottish-wo

  9. Grant me, indulgent Heaven, that I may live,
    To see the miscreants feel the pains they give;
    Deal Freedom’s sacred treasures free as air,
    Till Slave and Despot be but things that were.
