La película nos cuenta la historia de Angela Bennett, una experta analista de sistemas computacionales interpretada por Sandra Bullock, quien pasa sus días encerrada en casa trabajando a distancia, revisando códigos informáticos y eliminando virus para diversas empresas, teniendo como único contacto con el mundo exterior las pantallas de sus computadoras y las llamadas telefónicas. Su vida tranquila se transforma en una pesadilla total cuando cae en sus manos un misterioso disco que contiene un programa informático secreto capaz de dar acceso a los sistemas de seguridad más protegidos del gobierno de los Estados Unidos, convirtiéndola de inmediato en el blanco principal de una peligrosa organización de criminales cibernéticos.
El verdadero terror de esta historia comienza cuando los villanos utilizan la red para borrar por completo la identidad legal de la protagonista, modificando sus datos en todas las computadoras del país para cambiar su nombre, borrar sus cuentas de banco y crearle un registro de antecedentes penales falso, demostrando lo fácil que es destruir a alguien cuando toda su vida depende de un sistema electrónico centralizado. Es una película sumamente entretenida que se disfruta muchísimo entre amigos por su ritmo ágil y suspenso constante, pero que también nos deja pensando seriamente sobre los riesgos de la pérdida de privacidad y la fragilidad de nuestra existencia en un mundo que ya desde la década de 1990 corría con prisa hacia la digitalización absoluta.
