  7. Tom Cruise’s Digger Really Did Open With $8 Million, And Verity Absolutely Crushed It

The estimates were bad; however, the final weekend picture is worse. Tom Cruise’s Digger opened with approximately $8 million domestically and $20 million worldwide, turning what looked like a major box-office problem into one of the year’s biggest theatrical disappointments.

Meanwhile, Verity, starring Anne Hathaway, Dakota Johnson and Josh Hartnett, opened to $32.6 million domestically and $62.6 million globally.

So yes. The Colleen Hoover movie made more than four times Digger’s domestic opening. Entertainment Weekly reports that Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s Digger cost somewhere in the region of $140 million to $180 million, depending on disputed production estimates.

Its $8 million domestic debut ranks among Tom Cruise’s weakest wide openings and leaves Digger facing the prospect of a serious financial loss. Verity, meanwhile, comfortably took the weekend’s No. 1 spot. There is really no way to dress up an $8 million opening for a film this expensive.

Tom Cruise Couldn’t Save Digger From the Box Office

This is not one of those box-office stories where a movie misses projections by a few million, and everyone immediately declares cinema dead. Digger is a major studio release built around one of the biggest movie stars in the world.

That is what makes the result so striking. Cruise became almost synonymous with the campaign to save theatrical cinema after Top Gun: Maverick. Steven Spielberg famously thanked him for helping save Hollywood. Cruise toured the world promoting the big-screen experience, jumped out of aircraft for stunts and recorded messages thanking audiences for going to cinemas.

Prince William and Kate Middleton also benefited from the film’s royal premiere and the positive publicity around their appearance. Days later, however, reports emerged that some Palace figures were uneasy about Tom Cruise’s growing closeness to the couple because of his association with Scientology.

Audiences, however, seem to have delivered a simpler verdict: we’ll catch this one at home, Tom.

    Digger Was a Hard Sell

That doesn’t mean Cruise has suddenly lost his movie-star status. If another Mission: Impossible film appeared tomorrow showing him hanging from the underside of a helicopter while holding a nuclear weapon between his teeth, audiences would probably show up.

The problem is the movie. Cruise’s box-office power has always depended more heavily on the project than the mythology around Tom Cruise sometimes admits.

Top Gun is a brand. Mission: Impossible is a brand. Digger is an expensive, strange satire from Alejandro G. Iñárritu about an oil billionaire. Those things are not commercially interchangeable.

Verity Had the One Thing Digger Never Found: a Clear Hook

Then there is Verity. A film based on a hugely popular Colleen Hoover novel and starring Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson is easy to sell because audiences immediately understand the premise.

A woman takes a writing job, moves into a creepy house and discovers a disturbing manuscript. Add a handsome husband, buried secrets and the possibility that Anne Hathaway may be dangerous, and you have a very clear hook.

Hollywood talks constantly about IP, but the real advantage of recognisable material is simple communication. People know what Verity is offering before they buy a ticket.

Digger never found an equally clear pitch. Then there is the budget, which remains the most baffling part. Why did an eccentric adult satire need to cost somewhere around $150 million?

Nobody is arguing that directors should only make superhero films. Quite the opposite. Studios should fund strange, original movies.

But perhaps they should not spend the GDP of a small island unless the film has a realistic path to earning it back. That makes the enormous prestige campaign around Digger look even more awkward.

Thank God Digger did not happen to star a trans actor or a Black woman, because we all know exactly what would have happened next. The usual “go woke, go broke” crowd would have treated an $8 million opening as definitive proof that diversity had finally destroyed cinema.

When Superwoman, Wonder Woman or any female-led franchise struggles, the explanation somehow becomes identity politics, DEI and audiences “rejecting woke Hollywood.” But when an expensive film built around a white male superstar crashes, suddenly everyone remembers that movies can fail for perfectly ordinary reasons: the premise was hard to sell, the budget was absurd, the marketing did not connect, or audiences simply were not interested.

Funny how quickly nuance returns when there is no minority group available to blame. Digger is a useful reminder that sometimes a movie just does not work commercially. No culture-war conspiracy required.
