Week of Convalescence

During my week of convalescence after getting hit by a car, I watched so much TV that my brain was in danger of turning to mush and oozing through my ears.  

I watched movies, whole seasons of shows, and true crime documentaries. I got my money’s worth with these streaming services, though I didn’t dip into Starz or Peacock, which I do and don’t pay for, respectively.

72 Hours with Kevin Hart and SNL’s Marcello Hernandez (movie on Netflix): A ridiculous comedy that Kevin Hart is too old and too far into his career to star in, but right on time for young Marcello. There’s a scene with poached whale penises. I am not ashamed to admit I laughed.

White Chicks with Shawn and Marlon Wayans (movie on Netflix): I rewatched the comedy out of nostalgia and curiosity to see why Marlon claims people are always asking for a sequel. It don’t need one.

Adults (series on Hulu): My niece recommended this hilarious comedy about New York roommates in their early 20s to cheer me up. I’m so glad she did. I paid it forward and told a cousin to add it to her queue. I wonder how their table reads and rehearsals went. I hope there’s a third season.

Dying for Sex with Michelle Williams from Dawson’s Creek (series on Hulu): It’s a dramedy centered around a woman dying of stage 4 breast cancer that spreads to the rest of her body. She leaves her husband to go on a quest to finally experience an orgasm caused by another person. Proceed with caution depending on your mental state.

Perfect Wife (true crime docuseries on Hulu): The real-life version of Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. If you don’t get that reference, go ahead and read the novel. Cheat code: watch the movie starring Ben Affleck. It stayed very true to the novel. A wife disappears for weeks causing everyone to suspect the husband of foul play. Then she returns. Her story has holes.

Natureboy (true crime docuseries on Hulu): A young Black man started a cult and got vulnerable people seeking connection and direction to follow him around the globe and give him money. Once they were thoroughly brainwashed, he abused them.

It Ends With Us (movie on Hulu): I read the book (and its sequel) by Colleen Hoover because I learned an adaptation starring Blake Lively was in the works. I was a huge Lively fan. When all the controversy surrounding the movie emerged, I was turned off from seeing it in theaters, knowing it would make its way to streaming. The title stems from Lilly Bloom breaking the cycle of domestic violence and finding real love.

Is God Is with Sterling K. Brown and Vivica A. Fox (movie on Prime) I can’t say I was excited to watch this movie about a mother who asks her twin daughters to kill their father after his attempted murder of them by setting them ablaze. Something about the trailer didn’t grab me, but I stand corrected after watching it at home.

Not pictured: the bizarre season 3 of Euphoria with Zendaya and Colman Domingo on HBO Max (Max?) and DVR’d shows, such as my favorite Access Hollywood. I’m heartbroken that after decades on air, NBC cancelled the daily entertainment-centered news show. By the end of this month, no more Scott Evans—at least not on network TV. I’ll still catch him on his YouTube series House Guest, which I also caught up on during the week. I attended the New York stop of the live tour in April. Don Lemon and Tamron Hall were guests.

Fun Fact: KevOnstage né Kevin Fredericks was Scott’s first guest on House Guest. I had tickets to see KevOnstage’s one man play Grief Sucks the week that lady said she didn’t see me and hit me in the crosswalk. I missed the show and a weekend in Philly.

Back to the boob tube: I watched hours of Brooklyn News 12 interspersed with a slew of personal injury attorney commercials. Oh, the freaking irony. I changed the channel when the pre-recorded loop of news stories replayed.

After days of delivery, leftovers, and quite frankly skipped meals, my shoulder gave me permission to cook dinner Saturday. It was a simple stir-fry of beef sausage, beans, corn, onions, and kale. You know what wasn’t simple? Cutting the onions and sausage, and stripping, cutting, and massaging the kale. Why is kale the one being massaged in this household? I pay the damn mortgage.

Certain tasks I’ll go ahead and struggle to use my left hand, my non-dominant hand. It took me 56 seconds to unlock the two locks of my front door. I know because I recorded myself. My coordination was so off. I later figured I should insert with the right, then turn (what caused the pain) with the left. But when it comes to knives, I’ll go ahead and grit my teeth and bear the pain while I do what needs to be done. Same for putting my waist-length braids into a bun to can shower. My shoulder was on fire, shooting bolts down my bicep and up my trapezoid, but I’ve been here before.

The other day, I made spaghetti. Neither stirring the spaghetti nor straining the water were easy feats, but I did them.

While prepping, cooking, and eating, I started and finished listening to audiobook Baggage Claimed by Alexandra Warren. The spicy romance aka smut novella clocks in at 2 hours and 37 minutes. I listened at 1.5 speed, and I’m moving slowly these days, so even pausing for a call didn’t stop me from finishing around the same time I finished eating. Cleaning? Well, the pots went on the bottom shelf of the fridge and everything else loaded into the dishwasher.

During the week, I finished audiobook Miracle at St. Anna by James McBride and physical book With Love from Harlem by ReShonda Tate. Miracle was a Libby hold due the next day with someone waiting. I listened on double speed while I wallowed at the police station to file a report about the crash.

With Love from Harlem is also tainted. I read the first 130+ pages of the historical fiction novel about the relationship between Hazel Scott and Adam Clayton Powell, Jr (news to me!) during my first emergency room trip in August due to a respiratory viral infection. I was there from 7 pm to 4 am. They owe me a w2 for that work shift.

It’s a long weekend and the last few days of summer. The plan is to end the bed and couch rot to venture out and enjoy this beautiful city. I may go to the movies. A theater with reclining seats, of course.

SINOPSE
Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) alcança o objetivo pelo qual tanto lutou: o Trono de Ferro. No entanto, a vitória revela-se muito mais amarga do que esperava – Porto Real está devastada, o apoio popular é instável e Aegon II Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney) continua vivo, representando uma ameaça à sua reivindicação. Ainda enfrentando oposições à sua legitimidade, Rhaenyra adota medidas cada vez mais despóticas para preservar seu poder.

COMENTÁRIOS
É consenso que a 2ª temporada de A Casa do Dragão foi inferior à de estreia, e aqui vai a boa notícia: esta 3ª temporada, que já começa com uma versão mais percussiva do tema de abertura de Game of Thrones, traz avanços significativos à trama da série, introduzindo novos personagens memoráveis e recolocando a guerra civil Targaryen no centro das atenções com cenas brutais e devastadoras envolvendo humanos e, obviamente, dragões. Tendo a 2ª temporada se encerrado com um episódio anticlimático que apenas preparou o cenário para a memorável Batalha da Goela, aqui já começamos com este importante e sangrento evento de Fogo e Sangue, colocado na tela com requintes cinematográficos.

Se as temporadas anteriores foram mais sobre a construção da tensão e o acender do pavio do grande conflito, esta foi sua explosão. O showrunner Ryan Condal conseguiu (na maior parte do tempo) equilibrar o espetáculo épico das batalhas de dragões com o peso dramático das falhas de seus protagonistas. A devastadora Batalha da Goela era um dos momentos mais aguardados pelos leitores, que ficaram extremamente decepcionados por terem de esperar mais dois anos para vê-la finalmente ganhar vida. Mas a espera valeu a pena: a escala da batalha, combinada com a fúria dos dragões vindos dos céus, o drama de Rhaena (Phoebe Campbell) e seu dragão Roubovelhas, que resultou nas mortes de Jace (Harry Collett) e Vermax, e por fim o confronto naval entre Corlys Velarion (Steve Toussaint) e a almirante Shrarako Lohar (Abigail Thorn), resultou em uma das sequências de ação mais impressionantes da televisão. Adicionalmente, o peso emocional das perdas sofridas pelo lado Preto ditou o tom sombrio para o resto da temporada.

Com  pouco tempo para recuperar o fôlego, no episódio seguinte vemos a tomada de Porto Real, quando Rhaenyra e Daemon (Matt Smith) finalmente chegam com seus dragões na Fortaleza Vermelha e reivindicam o Trono de Ferro. Foi um momento de catarse que rapidamente se transformou em apreensão, que capturou perfeitamente o vazio e a paranoia dessa vitória, mostrando que sentar no trono e mantê-lo são desafios completamente diferentes. Colocando novas peças no tabuleiro deste jogo de Cyvasse (o equivalente ao xadrez em Westeros) chega Ormund Hightower (o excelente James Norton), primo de Alicent (Olivia Cooke) – um sujeito afeminado que não suporta cheiros fortes. Aquartelado com suas tropas em Tumbleton, ele conspira à distância contra Rhaenyra com o objetivo de colocar o sobrinho Daeron Targaryen (Benjamin Evan Ainsworth) no trono, como forma de ele próprio assumir, dos bastidores, o domínio dos Sete Reinos.

Em paralelo acompanhamos a sofrida trajetória do deformado e deposto Aegon II Targaryen (Tom Glynn-Carney), que acompanhado pelo insidioso Larys Strong (Matthew Needham), sofre todo o tipo de humilhações até reencontrar seu dragão Sunfyre. O momento em que ele e o dragão dourado (que, assim como ele, também ficou desfigurado após a Batalha do Ninho das Gralhas) confrontam um destacamento da Casa Mooton, é um dos pontos altos da temporada. É difícil, ali, deixar de torcer por um personagem que, até então, era retratado como um dos vilões da série.

A temporada culmina no caos da Batalha de Tumbleton, um espetáculo de carnificina que novamente ilustrou o quão incontroláveis os dragões (e seus montadores) podem ser, onde o humilhado Ulf (Tom Bennett) lança Asa Prata tanto contra as tropas de Daemon como as de Ormund. Mas o momento que mais permanecerá na memória dos espectadores é o combate entre Ormund e Sor Roderick Dustin, personagem secundário que ganhou maior proeminência graças à interpretação carismática de Tommy Flanagan. O duelo combina horror, violência e humor, culminando na já célebre “Enrabada Nortista” desferida por Roderick em Ormund, um pouco antes de os dois serem assados pelas chamas de Asa Prata.

Mas esta 3ª temporada não está isenta de problemas, decorrentes principalmente do grande número de personagens e a impossibilidade de desenvolver muitos arcos a contento. O fim da trajetória de Sor Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel) é decepcionante, com ele morrendo rapidamente após ficar interminavelmente perambular com seus homens em um pântano. Alicent também não tem muito o que fazer além de basicamente servir como escada para a trajetória de Haelena (Phia Saban), que por não resistir ao cativeiro imposto por Rhaenyra, ao final se joga da janela de seu quarto. E o que dizer do arco de Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) em Harrenhal com Alys (Gayle Rankin), que na essência é o mesmo de Daemon e que foi o ponto baixo da 2ª temporada? Pelo menos ele se encerra de forma satisfatória com o reencontro e reconciliação dele com Aegon II, que irão unir suas forças (e dragões) contra Rhaenyra.

E temos, claro, todo o “mimimi” sobre as diferenças da série em relação ao livro Fogo e Sangue, que inclusive levaram o autor George R.R. Martin a romper com Ryan Condal, mas sobre isso tenho opinião similar à de Game of Thrones. Sim, a adaptação continua a tomar simplificações e liberdades criativas, mas em sua maioria elas enriquecem a experiência televisiva e preenchem as lacunas deixadas pelo estilo histórico do livro. Fogo e Sangue é escrito a partir da perspectiva do Arquimeistre Gyldayn, que se baseia em fontes altamente não confiáveis (como o bobo Cogumelo e o Septão Eustace). O livro frequentemente apresenta três versões diferentes para o mesmo evento, enquanto a série opta por dramatizar e contar a “verdade objetiva”. Se isso, por um lado, elimina a ambiguidade do livro, por outro cria uma narrativa muito mais focada e trágica.

No livro, tanto Rhaenyra quanto Alicent rapidamente se tornam figuras amargas, cruéis e quase caricaturais em sua sede de sangue à medida que a guerra avança, enquanto a série se esforça para mostrar as nuances de suas decisões, focando em como elas são, em muitos aspectos, vítimas das maquinações dos homens ao seu redor e do peso esmagador de suas posições, hesitando muito mais antes de cometer atrocidades. Talvez a série peque em, pelo menos até o segmento final desta temporada, colocar Rhaenyra no papel de heroína, relegando Alicent automaticamente ao de vilã – algo que, até pelo que o programa busca mostrar -, não é o mais correto.

Já quanto ao desenvolvimento dos “Sementes de Dragão”, personagens como Hugh Martelo (Kieran Bew) e Ulf, o Branco, são retratados no livro de forma bastante unidimensional como brutamontes gananciosos e traiçoeiros. Já a 3ª temporada da série dedicou muito mais tempo de tela a eles antes de Tumbleton. Ao explorar suas origens humildes, suas motivações e o efeito inebriante de receberam o poder de deuses, a traição final deles (ou pelo menos a de Ulf, mostrada até agora) se tornou muito mais complexa e dolorosa. Resta torcer para que Ryan Condal não se deixe envolver pelo excesso de espetáculo e simplificação das temporadas finais de Game of Thrones e conclua a série de forma satisfatória, mostrando a “Dança dos Dragões” como ela realmente é – não apenas uma guerra por poder, mas sim uma tragédia grega sobre o fim de uma dinastia e o crepúsculo da era dos dragões.
