  1. Solar Powered Pyrolysis Facility Converts Scrap Plastic into Fuel - [naturejab] shows off his solar powered pyrolysis machine which can convert scrap ... - hackaday.com/2025/08/23/solar- #organicmaterial #solar-powered #solarhacks #magnetron #pyrolysis #hardware #plastic

  2. Non-recyclable waste is a global challenge. One Community’s open-source Highest Good Housing Plan explores sustainable solutions for handling this waste at small and large scales.

For small communities, composting, biogas digesters, and local recycling centers are viable. Large-scale technologies like gasification and pyrolysis convert waste into energy.

  3. @kornel there’s a recent meta-analysis of life-cycle assessments focused on #climate impacts. It’s one of the better I’ve seen. The authors are much more sanguine than I have been on climate benefits of #pyrolysis or #gasification to remake polymers. Importantly, so-called #energy recovery from #plastic always pencils out poorly. Given that most oil goes to transportation, it’s a clear loser as enacted. sciencedirect.com/science/arti

  4. TIL - Sewer sludge (euphemistically called #biosolids by many cities) can be turned into #biochar via #pyrolysis.

If the pyrolysis happens at >600C for >10 minutes, the resulting biochar will be free of #microplastics, #PFAs, pathogens, and pharmaceuticals - all of which could continue to be a problem when you just #compost sewer sludge.

And... the #phosphorous is retained in the biochar, meaning it'll be a fertilizer in addition to the other biochar benefits.
