  11. I looked up the above paper because I am curious about how direct air capture (DAC) used with renewable energy could create synthetic e-fuels. "E-fuels could extend the reach of wind and solar electricity to potentially all end-use
sectors" according to this paper "Potential and risks of hydrogen-based e-
fuels in climate change mitigation" publications.pik-potsdam.de/re . It walks through the energy efficiency of using e-fuels versus direct electrification.

Generally direct electrification is better, but for high intensity applications it will make sense to use synthetic fuels. Currently e-fuels are much more expensive than fossil fuels, so it is important to support e-fuel development now, while making sure that it is not a distraction from direct electrification.

  13. The book was written in 2021 and solar has grown dramatically since then. I think synthetic fuels created using solar power will be a big part of the energy mix going forward. There are companies like Terraform Industries
terraformindustries.com/ and Prometheus Fuels prometheusfuels.com/ (these are not an endorsements) which are pushing in this direction. If synthetic fuels take off, then there would be massive demand for more solar.

  14. @Snoro
At the end of the day, biomass is (at least in theory) #SolarEnergy stored as chemical energy. Another way to store solar energy as chemical energy would be to convert electricity from solar PV to #GreenHydrogen; either for storage and use as is or convert it into more user-friendly green #SyntheticFuels like methane, methanol or even heavier hydrocarbons like kerosene or diesel.

  15. E-fuels are synthetic fuels that can be used to power cars and planes without emitting carbon dioxide. They are made by combining hydrogen and carbon dioxide, which can be captured from the air or from industrial sources. However, e-fuels have a hidden cost: they require a lot of energy and water to produce, and they may not be as efficient or sustainable as electric vehicles.

  18. So, as it turns out it's not necessarily the energy demand of #syntheticFuels/#eFuels that is mind bending.

Its #water demand is even more mind bending.

Falter et al come to the conclusion that: "The water footprint consists of 7.4 liters per liter of jet fuel of direct demand on-site and 42.4 liters per liter of jet fuel of indirect demand"

By the way: I don't see any reason why the numbers should significantly differ for car fuel.

Let's say the 42 litres will magically solve itself by #innovation and somehow #efficient processes (yeah, we hear you FDP, the future is going to be great!).

Then there is still a demand of 7 litres per litre of fuel on-site. On-site (as discussed in Germany at the moment) means: sunny regions towards the equator, deserts, South America, Africa, well basically were ever the colonies were.

This debate is stupid, utterly, utterly colonialist.
