Миллион частиц на iPhone: строим аттрактор Лоренца на GPU с Metal

Привет! Я Максим Савченко, iOS-разработчик. Эта история началась с вопроса, как сделать живую форму в духе иконки Siri — и довольно быстро уехала в другую сторону: аттрактор Лоренца на сотнях тысяч, а потом и на миллионе частиц, где и расчёт, и отрисовка живут на GPU. Вся схема держится на одной идее: состояние частиц на CPU больше не возвращается. Compute-шейдер читает один буфер, пишет в другой, render-pass сразу рисует результат, на следующем кадре буферы меняются местами. В статье разбираю это по шагам: математика и выбор интегратора, ping-pong-буферы, compute/render-пайплайн, point primitives и additive blending. А в конце — GPU Frame Capture и замеры на физическом iPhone. Спойлер, который я сам не ожидал: RK4 в этой конфигурации оказался далеко не самым дорогим местом. Основная цена ушла в отрисовку и overdraw. Если коротко: это не гайд «как нарисовать красивую картинку», а разбор того, зачем вообще лезть в Metal и где кадр упирается на реальном устройстве.

Today it's Ping Pong's #caturday day.

Ping Pong (FKA Pangolin) is our shyest and most skittish cat.

Her worst fears are often realised.

She is my foreshadow, moving silently in front of me, where every second she risks tripping me up or being stepped on, and this has happened more than once. If she can't arrange for you to step on her, she will somehow contrive to turn suddenly and bang painfully into you anyway, regarding you reproachfully as if you attacked her.

However she's very affectionate, and will sometimes sit on your lap, if you have a blanket on it. But she will not be picked up for more than 4 seconds, before struggling to get down. She's afraid of heights but you can see that she would love to climb up on the cupboards where Zaz perches. Sadly it seems she can see no safe way to do so.

We love her in spite of (or because of) her peculiar ways. So today here she is to celebrate Caturday with you all!

Have a good one, friends, and watch your step. There could be a cat under your foot.
